My Time in MGU.

Curriculum is much dry and old class. I was interested in Environment studies and that made me choose this department. But when it comes to real world application, we are not prepared. But the accessibility and availability of lab equipments are impressive and appreciative. Teaching methods needs to be much more interesting and effective. Exams are conducted with only one day break in between, which is exhausting. But their difficulty level is moderate.

There is only few internship opportunities provided by the department itself. Unpaid internships are common in the department. But paid internships are not very frequent. In my knowledge there is only one internship post for freshers in the department. Others are for research fellows. The connections of the teachers and accomplices can be utilised for acquiring internships and other positions in other institutions. Consultancy works are undergoing in the department which is lead by research scholars. This fund is utilised for funding special events. Provision for providing campus placements are under progress.

The fee for MSc Environment science and disaster management course in school of Environment science in Mahatma Gandhi University kottayam is fluctuating around 10-13 thousand per semester. In Addition to this, 1000 and change is also remitted as exam fee every semester which comprises sports fee, paper fee etc. E grants is provided to eligible students. Fee for Environmental science and management is a few hundred lesser than DM. Fee for MSc Applied Geology is around 28 thousand per semester with variation. Exam fee is lesser for SC and ST students. Field visits are included in the course.

The first celebration typing in the starting of year will be fresher's day which is mostly in September. This is for welcoming freshers and familiarising them. Cultural programmes, ice breaking sessions and DJ party is mostly conducted.then onam festival celebration, Department days, christmas celebration, hostel day, Carnival, youth festival etc. The university library have vast collection of books from all departments. The library has been recently modified into a grand level. It is one of the major attraction of the campus. All The classrooms are smart rooms with projectors. One of the major attraction of our department is the GIS&RS centre which is the best GIS centre in india. Sports day is conducted but it seems under appreciated and not much cheered. Extracurricular activities are not really frequent in the campus. A music band run by students perform in events. Apart from that students perform blogs in YouTube regarding campus nature. Other interactions are not really seen here

Hostel facility is good. We are provided with cots, tables, chairs, bathrooms, drying area, wifi, etc in a sufficient manner. But we need to buy mattress. Hostel admission is via application, but it takes large amount of time to be allotted. Students that has the urgent necessity to get hostel are allotted via university union. hostel fee is 225 rs per month. Which is very affordable for all students. When it comes to mess food, it is affordable, but not of very good quality. The menu is nutritious but taste is not very appreciable. For both mess and hostel, a caution deposit is remitted which will be returned when the course is completed. There rented houses and pg in the locality but they are of high rate. Food is also not very good there either. The rate goes upto,7 thousand per month including food. The hostel is in university premises so it is easily accessible to the departments. Cycles are introduced to the campus which can be used by students using their id card upto 9 pm.

I applied to University of Kerala karyavattom campus for Environmental science and also for zoology. The entrance exam was descriptive and was somewhat moderately tough. I could only score 50 th rank. Whereas from MGU I was able to secure 7 th rank in Disaster management. I have also attended exam for microbiology, which I couldn't succeed. I have also applied for CUET and entrance exam of KUFOS. But couldn't write. In this department, the high ranked students are invited for interview via Email. After interview, the shortlisted students are send with the details of admission dates, required documents, fee structure etc. After admission, the class will start within 2 weeks. CAT is the entrance exam for securing admission. Sports quota, international students quota are also applicable for admission. There is a separate hostel for international students which is a little far from the University. It is not owned by university. Any science students are eligible for applying for the course

The teacher-student ratio has improved with time. Initially it wasn't sufficient especially when the new applied geology course started. Faculties are friendly and helpful. All the teachers are qualified and are renowned. But as a university department, they haven't had enough time to teach students. I don't dislike any teachers in particular but l specifically like a few due to their sincerity and efforts in teaching. Dr kannan Mohan is one them. Unfortunately he has been appointed to another department in the same campus. The are 4 semesters and 4 semester exams. In addition, a few internal exams for every subject is also conducted. Exams are not generally too hard, but more in a moderate level. Course curriculum is in a serious need of updation.
