What Students Say?
Likes
- There is an intro with the seniors when the freshers come to the campus and that is the closest it can get to ragging(there is no ragging). The seniors get to know the juniors and they provide incredible value and provide connections which help us.
- The no compulsory attendance is an amazing feature of bits pilani where the student is not obliged to attend classes to write the exams. This gives the students freedom and time to explore other fields of interest.
Dislikes
- The sports culture though present in high spirits the amount of good coaching is less. Which affects the players in winning less tournaments. This only applies to most of the team sports, the individual sports do real good in tournaments
- The absence of attendance gives the professor the complete authority of a specific course which some professors abuse and held classes till even 8 in the evening
Course Curriculum Overview
The main factor that enabled me to choose this course was my marks in the bitsat examination. But throughout my time in the course i have come to like and appreciate the field of computer science. The curriculum is based on the core concepts of computers and teaches us from the very basics. Some courses are not industry relevant but complement in the students' understanding of the subject. The teaching pedagogy of the professors is mostly based on slides and board methods. Whatever is learnt in the lectures is implemented and practiced in the subsequent tutorials and labs. The student is allowed to pick a number of electives which are industry relevant and provide the student the ability to choose their interests even if it doesn't belong to their course. The exams are held in a regular basis which is called continuous evaluation which makes the student stay up to date with course curriculum. Many courses have projects by which the students to get experience in solving problems.
Internships Opportunities
The college provides two compulsory internship opportunities called practice school 1 after second year and practice school 2 in the fourth year these provide relavant industry exposure to the students irrespective of their skill set. The students are allocated a station according to the cgpa of the student. The placement cell also provides opportunities for the students by bringing large mnc's for providing summer internships to students which are processed in the same way as the placements do. The ps-1 is an unpaid internship while ps-2 allowing students to get stipends ranging from 30,000 per month to 3,00,000 per month. The summer internship are difficult to crack into but the practice school is an opportunity that enables the students to get internships regardless.
Placement Experience
The palcements of bits pilani are well known around the country. The average package of Hyderabad campus is around 23 lakhs per annum in the academic year of 23-24 with a 87% of the students who appeared for the placements being placed. The companies start hiring for summer interns at the end of second year and beginning of third year. Where the students who get internships are likely to get a pre placement offer which means they do not need to appear for the placements. The companies start hiring the students in the first semester of fourth year and the placement drive continues till the end of fourth year. The companies which visit for placements are generally google, microsoft, nvidia, infosys, meta, adobe, oracle and many others. As per my plans, I am planning to pursue the field of entrepreneurship after my graduation. I have already started a social media marketing agency which i am planning to scale in the coming times
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
The admission fees is around 50000 and to freeze your seat you have to pay the first semester fees and hostel fees .The tuition fees is currently 3 lakhs per semester including hostel fees and mess fees. It increases every year by about 6%. Now this does not include the fees for summer term, practice school. The fees for the dual degree students is the same except they have to attend for 1 more year. There are two financial aids merit and merit cum needs. For merit scholarship you need to have a cgpa for atleast 9.5 to qualify for 100%. For merit cum needs the students' family income must be less than 8 lakhs per annum. And the amount of scholarship depends on the cgpa of the student. For students who don't qualify for both the scholarships there is a SBI branch inside the campus from where you can avail loan for the complete fees or partial fees that too collateral free.
Campus Life
The campus has three major fests and a few more minor fests throughout the year. Atmos - technical fest held in november , arena - sports fest held in February and Pearl being the cultural and biggest fest of the year held in april. All the fests are held on a large scale and are handled completely by the student bodies with very less involvement of the administration. The college clubs and departments culture is very evident since 70% of the students being parr of some club or department or sport. The library has a extremely big collection of books ranging in all kinds of topics. The students can access books anytime and even borrow the books. There is a new collection introduced every week. Every classroom is equipped with projector white board, black board and a camera where the classes are recorded and provided to students. There are a variety of sports available on campus including outdoor and indoor sports. There are also social groups like nss and nirmaan which are non profit.
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are fairly good they have a table, a bed, whiteboard and a cupboard included per room for single rooms and two of each in sharing rooms. The first and second yearites are placed in double sharing rooms and thirs year onwards in the single rooms. The washrooms are also good and are cleaned everyday. There is a student mess council which oversees the quality of the food and the menu. The members of this council are elected every year. The menu has a variety of meals every week and the menu is changed every couple months. There is no pg facility available in or near the campus. There are 2 messes in the campus both being coed and are located close to the hostels. There are a total of 12 hostels, 9 for boys and 3 for girls. Each hostel has a playground with badminton and volleyball courts. They are also equipped with common rooms in each floor which is either an indoor games room or a cinema room.
Admission
I was allotted a seat at iit kharaghpur in the branch of metallurgical engineering in the jossaa counselling. I could have done better in the preferance filling where i would have gotten a better branch. I cracked every college i applied to leaving me with a broad range of choices to choose from. I went with bits pilani due to the amazing culture and overall development the student gets studying there. There was also an obstacle of reservation due to which i could not get my choice of branches even after getting a good enough rank of 5325. Bits pilani has no reservation policy which meant only those students would be admitted who cracked to purely based on merit. The main admission criteria of the college is the bitsat examination. And to be eligible for the seat the student needs to have an aggregate percentage of 75 in 12th and a minimum of 65% in maths, physics and chemistry. After the release of marks the students go through a councelling process where they get a branch allotted.
Faculty
Most of the faculties are very friendly and extremely supportive. You can reach out to any of the professors at their chambers or even resolve your doubts via email. The course structure depends entirely in the hands of the instructor in charge, the professor decides when and what of the course. But in general a course has mid semester and comprehensive examinations which are compulsory to attend and there are smaller components such as quizzes, assignments, projects, labs and class participation. Some courses even have surprise quizzes. The grading in most courses is relative and not percentage based. It means the grade a particular student receives in a course depends on where he/she stands in the class ranking instead of the marks he/she gets. The students who fail a particular class is when they manage to get a total of less than 10% of the total course marks or they fail to appear in the comprehensive examination. The course curriculum is constantly changing according to industry.
