What Students Say
Likes
- The university campus is great. It is very lively and life like. Infrastructure wise too everything's great and well organised.
- The college is student friendly. It's not very strict like other colleges. Only job of the student is not to get into trouble. Otherwise everything works for you just fine. Teachers too are friendly and approachable.
- There are many areas that students can explore to showcase their talents. There are many student run clubs conducting events every other day. Apart from academics, student can showcase other talents here. They also get recognised for it.
Dislikes
- The law college is still new and developing. So most standard operating procedures are still unclear and is always subject to changes. It is slowly getting into shape to compete with other established law schools.
- The location of the law college building is far away from the main University entrance. It feels disconnected from the entire university and it's very difficult to get to. It takes around 20-30 mins to reach from the railway station.
- College hours is a real problem. For us it's from 8:30-2:40 with a lunch break. Considering the location of the college, it makes it very difficult to go for internships after college. 50 mins per period too is unwarranted.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum and course is not bad but it can be better. There are some unwanted subjects in the syllabus just for the sake of it and then many important subjects are missing. However, they're being added in upcoming batches. Typically teaching drops after 1st cycle test and staff tend to skip parts of the syllabus due to time constraints and quick approaching of the models. Exam timings are sufficient and not very difficult. Difficulty of the exam is based on the faculty but I have never felt it to be very difficult.
Internships Opportunities
There are no internship opportunities of any sort. There is a placement cell where they share internship opportunities to the students. Students have to compulsorily go for internships every semester. There is a internship diary which they have to fill and get signed from their internship employer. This carries 100 marks and is a subject in every semester.
Placement Experience
Placements are not great but it is improving. Students can apply during final semester. Companies like Surana and Surana, Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, PNB housing, etc have visited and offered placements. Highest package was around 6,00,000 LPA. Percentage of students getting placed is unknown but it is very less. I plan to venture into corporate law after getting the degree. I rely on college placement to some extent.
Fees and Financial Aid
I'm paying Rs. 2,00,000/- per year (All inclusive). The previous batches were paying 1.5 lakhs. Upcoming batches might have to pay 2.5 lakhs. Merit and reservation based scholarships are available. Apart from the 2 lakhs, semester exam fee is paid to the tune of Rs. 2000. If you require transport facilities, you can pay another 60,000 and avail it.
Campus Life
SRM is known for its events and festivals. They're always grand and enjoyed by many. Within the law college there are Forum Justitia (Student Law Club), Moot society, and Lex Khronika (Student Run Magazine) where student can take part. Outside law school and in the university there are many clubs. There is also a directorate of student affairs where students can join. There are many arenas for the students to shine and showcase their talents and skills. They will also be recognised for it. Classrooms are equipped with projectors, Air conditioners, etc. Library and moot court too is great.
Admission
I applied for DULLB, Symbiosis, BHU, etc. I wrote the entrance exams and cleared them as well. During admission time my father fell ill and I had to be in the city to take care of him. So I chose a college within Chennai. SRM felt like a good option since it was one of the few universities offering 3 year LLB course. SRM has a reputation so I chose this college. There are no entrance exams or cutoffs of any sort to join SRM law. Just apply online, pay the fee, and join.
Faculty
Most faculties except a few at SRM school of law are really friendly and approachable. They will help you with your requests if valid. Some faculties maybe tightly wound but that's not much of a concern. The faculty I personally liked would be our ex. Dean Dr. Vincent Komraj. The man is a legend and is the most approachable. As far as other staff are concerned, I would rate Dr. Sumana Vedant, Mr. Manglacharan Patra, & Ms. Anviti Mishra very highly. There are other great faculties too but I haven't got the opportunity to interact with them. There is no one that I don't like. For us, there are 3 exams per semester. 1. Cycle test, 2. Model, and 3. Semester exam. For new batches there are 2 cycle tests. 25 marks for internals and 75 marks from semester exams. Some students fail to clear exams because they don't care to do well. Course and curriculum are alright. It keeps getting updated for every new batch.
