What Students Say
Likes
- The campus size here is considerable for enjoying the student life for four years.
- The library is huge with plenty of books including fiction, and course books and has enough of seating capacity.
- Extracurricular activities that happen most of the time of the year keeps us engaged and stress free.
Dislikes
- The hostel facilities are nothing as facilities, it is just accomodation with poor infrastructure, hygiene issues in mess, washrooms, the food is not upto the mark and the room is just livable.
- The ragging culture is prominent here, with many silly rules of seniors to follow; no shorts, slippers, metal bangles, watches to be worn by first year; just to name a few.
- The class feels more like a school rather than a college with uniform culture and sitting desks like middle school.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is up to the mark and the professors teach the point nicely as they are qualified enough for it. The classes are so school like and it feels so outdated otherwise the curriculum is optimized for real-world experiences and the frequency of exams is such that students are busy throughout the year most of the time.
Internships Opportunities
There are different companies offering internships in Haldia Institute of Technology namely TCS, Wipro, Bharat Petroleoum, Indian oil, Haldia Petrochemical, Exide, Haldia Port. There are different projects one can build in IT field for internship.
Placement Experience
Campus placements generally do start at the end of the third year(sixth semester) and the beginning of the fourth year(seventh semester) Many companies are visiting the Haldia Institute of Technology and the median package is around 5-6 lakhs ( 2024 is an exception due to the recession at the nationwide level) Even during the recession, the highest package was 33 LPA at a company named Commvault Usually, 90%+ students do get placed (except this year, which is as low as 50% - 60%) I Prefer appearing for GATE.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee is simple, two times per year (every semester) pay the hostel fees included if opted for that. moreover, the fees here are very low considering that it is a Tier 2 Private Engineering college. The hostel costs 2000 per month without extra costs (doesn't include mess bill) The complete cost including fees, hostel, and even personal expenses should be lower than 7 lakh. There are many scholarship aids available and even different loan schemes for educational loans are accepted in the college.
Campus Life
The campus life of Haldia Institute of Technology is something to talk about, ther are many events (both technincal and cultural) happening almost thorughout the year. There are cafes and resturant in the campus. The library is one of the best things to exist here, it has plenty of space for study and a lot of books both course and few fictions. The library is digital including borrowing and returning. The campus has 2 football fields, cricket ground, baskteball ground, hence there are sports events happening regularily. The societies and clubs are good for personal development and networking as Haldia Institute of Technology has a lot of them.
Hostel Facilities
I chose the Darwin's Hall of Residence (P5 Hostel) which is inside the hostel, there are 2 more hostels dedicate for first year, namely Balajee Hostel and Rani Chowk Boy's hostel. Here the facilities are just enough for survival. The meals in the mess might seem repititive and bland, not much tasty for long term, thankfully there are many restaurants nearby providing good food for cheap.
Admission
So anyone wanting to study at Haldia Institute of Technology can get admission through the ranks of JEE Main or WBJEE (WBJEE is particularly easier than JEE Main). The counselling starts shortly after WBJEE results and West Bengal students get some reservations. The only thing I didn't like is that the college is not much accessible and it is hectic to get to and fro Haldia so coming just for the reporting before the admission process (after counseling) is an exhaustive experience.
Faculty
There is a good number of faculty members per number of students, and that is not a problem here, also most professors here are Masters or PhD holders from premier Indian Institutes and have substantial knowledge of their substantial fields of work. Approaching and interacting with a professor is not a hard task, the hard task is mostly knowing where the office of the prof is and whether he/she is free or not, though some professors act like nursery teachers treating students like little kids ( is that a problem, I guess every person has a different perspective in this aspect.)
