Entrance Preview

I took SMUGET us the entrance exam needed to qualify for a seat at SMIMS. This exam is held is at various centres all over India. It is an online exam testing knowledge on physics, chemistry, biology and English. There are 200 questions each with one mark for a correct response and no negative markings. There are two separate lists of merit, the general and the northeast list.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Medical curriculum as approved by the Medical Council of India. In the firat two semesters the subjects are anatomy, biochemistry and physiology. The third, fourth and fifth semesters deal with the subjects pathology, microbiology, forensic medicine and toxicology and pharmacology. The sixth and seventh semesters include Ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngilogy and community medicine. The final year is the eight and ninth semesters deal with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. All the subjects are compulsory and there are no electives.

Internships Opportunities

Internship at the hospital was very hands on. The internship was compulsory and rotated between various departments for a period of one year. There is two months of internal medicine (including 15 days of psychiatry),two months of surgery (including 15 days if anaesthesia),two months of obstetrics and gynaecology, two months of community medicine (where one is posted at a rural health centre),one month of paediatrics, one month of orthopaedics,15 days of ENT,15 days of Opthalmology,15 emergency dept and 15 days of elective (skin, radiology, blood bank, psychiatry, forensic medicine).

Placement Experience

5

There is no system of placements in medicine. And there is no lack of job opportunities. One can apply to work anywhere in India and abroad. To work abroad one has to pass the licensing exam of the particular country where one intends to work in. No separate exam needs to be passed in order to work in India.

College Events

3.5

Cultural event and sports week called aura held annually, university fest called kaalrav held annually, apart from that many events held where national talents used to come.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee is quite feasible when compared to other private medical colleges in India. The fee which includes course fee, hostel fee and mess fee came to around 3.5 lakh rupees annualy while I was studying. There was an option to pay in two bi-yearly instalments on request. The fee agreed upon during admission remained constant for the 4.5 years of study without any increase in fee at any point.

Fees and Financial Aid

There weren't any scholarships to study medicine except for students from Sikkim who had to pay half the tuition fees paid by general category students. There was also an option to pay the fess in two instalments per year which was generally approved on written application.

Campus Life

4.5

Good vibrant campus life with good sports and cultural opportunities. Good library well stocked with the latest books. The students were from all over India, also a few from abroad. There was never any discrimination on the basis of religion, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation or economic status. The friends made during my college years have remained friends even years after passing out.

Hostel Facilities

4

One of the best hostel facilities I've seen. This has been confirmed by various friends studying elsewhere in India when they would visit me at Gangtok. The rooms were double seaters with a balcony (with a lively view) attached bathroom with washing area

Alumni/Alumna

Very positive interaction with alumni who are based both in India and abroad. Alumni have been helpful in getting jobs in India at places they have worked previously (due to their good work culture). Alumni settled abroad have been helpful in guiding a junior on the process of going to and working in countries they are currently settled in.

Exam Structure

Part completion tests regularly, half yearly exams conducted by the college and prof exams yearly conducted by the university.

Course Curriculum Overview:

MBBS was always my dream course. SMIMS has the highest faculty: student ratio as much as I have read about. All the faculties have specialization in their field, Mostly MD, DM, Ph.D., and also MBBS. We usually have 2 sessional exams, 1 pre-University and 1 University exam in a year, and many small formative assessments and tests throughout the year. It is quite easy to pass those exams if one is really dedicated to studies.

My overall experience in the campus is quite good. According to me, there are some aspects on which the college can work upon or should improve. Gender discrimination in case of curfews should be taken care of. The college should provide a good platform for the student-alumni interaction. Food quality could do with a lot of improvement.
