What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is comparatively small to other but very beautiful. There are facilities for most of the sports commonly played in India like football, cricket, volleyball.
- The college is located right beside the Behrampore Court Railway station. The connectivity with the Metro city of Kolkata is rather very convenient for this reason. Travel is not a big issue since it's connected either via Trains or Regular Buses.
- The Area around the college is pretty developed considering it to be a peripheral college. One would find anything they need be it for the reason of studies or hobbies.
Dislikes
- Excessive vegetation around the campus makes it a Adobe of snakes at times. They are often seen during summers.
- Lack of enough hostel rooms is a major problem as many had to stay in PGs during early months.
- Murshidabad is known for its extreme temperatures so heatwaves during the summers is a big problem.
Course Curriculum Overview
MBBS as a course is definitely vast. There's a lot to study and it might seem there's no end. But with the help of teachers and your fellow peers one can definitely get the grasp of the course. Not everything given in the book is to be Mugged up. It's important to develop a practical sense of what you see in wards, OPDs. Competency based approach as laid down by NMC can be a bit tricky to get hang of but most students here ultimately opt to study from Sources like MARROW, PREPLADDER. Semesters are taken every 4-5 months and the WBUHS University exam happens at the end of the academic year. Semesters serves as internal exams which you have to pass on order to appear for University exams. University exams are the real deal where your scores reflected on a Report as your professional year. The exams are definitely difficult and we had to spend many sleepless, stressful nights to cover the vast syllabus.
Internships Opportunities
After passing the Final year of MBBS, one has to go through internship where everyone is subjected to the clinical nature of what they learnt in books And gets first hand experience as a Doctor. It can often be challenging but it serve as a huge learning opportunity. Interns have to serve duties in all clinical departments like Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynaecology, Forensic Medicine, Radiology etc. Stipend during internship is ?29000
Fees and Financial Aid
Tution fee over the course of five year never changes in a Government institution. Each semester fee is ?4500 and hostel fee of 72. Many Scholarships are available to cover the expenses depending upon Caste, Marks etc. There's internship after you pass your 3rd Professional Part II exam where one has to serve long duty hours. In West Bengal, the stipend for every government college is around ?29k.
Campus Life
There are loads of things to enjoy in the college with friends. Chronaxie is the official socio-cultural fest of Murshidabad Medical College, happens each year around October - November over a span of 4 days. There are also events like Freshers, Teachers Day and Convocation of interns. Most of the books you would need are in Library. Equipped with Wifi, Air Conditioners and comfortable seats and tables it's definitely the ideal spot to study. There are lot of opportunities to be involved with your favourite hobbies and display them during fests, tournaments. Sports like football, cricket are very much appreciated and quite a few tournaments are held year round.
Hostel Facilities
Rooms are good enough for 2 people to stay. It comes with a table , chair and bed. The hostel canteen is pretty good as it provides thalis at a very cheap price but the quality is so-so. There's no bound times for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Admission
NEET is the only way to get seat in government medical colleges either via All India Quota or State quota. At the year 2020 the cutoff was about 580 through State quota for General but with increasing competition the bar has also raised I think. Admission is rather smooth if you follow the Proforma released to bring the required documents. There's a bond of 1 lakh which one would need to pay if he/she decides to give up his seat after admission.
Faculty
Each department has about 8-9 teachers to take classes during the academic year. Many teachers do make the subject interesting to study and few may make you feel like it's a burden. Overall teachers are helpful and appreciative of the efforts of students. One can easily reach out to them in need. The faculties are indeed qualified and adept enough. Demonstrations , practicals, regular tests really help the interested students to reach their potential.
