NIT Raipur, B.Tech, Metallurgical Engineering
Reviewed on Jun 6, 2018

Remarks

College management is too slow to act. Manier times files of students do not get passed due to the slow functioning of college administration and students are refrained to participate in reputed events be it national or international. The management is too orthodox minded that they don't want to even approve something innovative by students

Entrance Preview

All the National Institute Of Technology (NITs) give admission into undergraduate courses through JEE-Mains ( Paper-1 for B.Tech course while Paper-2 for B.Arch course). My score was 141/360 in Paper-1 of JEE-Mains 2017 to get into Metallurgical Engineering branch of NIT Raipur. Foundation of NIT Raipur was laid with 2 branches ie Metallurgical engineering and mining engineering, therefore, it has great infrastructure and faculties for Metallurgy here and great GATE results every year

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Since NIT Raipur is a deemed university, therefore, the curriculum is regularly updated by Board Of Directors. Metallurgical engineering course was recently updated and is bound to update in next couple of years depending on industrial needs and demands. The course curriculum focuses on ongoing research and international conference/journals that is why students perform much better in Research oriented jobs of BARC/DRDO etc from our college compared to other colleges.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, the college provides internship (Generally in summer) where the stipend is around 15k. The individual is entitled to apply for an internship for companies visiting campus placement after completion of 4th or 5th sem. Though he/she can apply for an intern in IIMs at any stage of college. Companies who generally provide internship opportunities are by Alpha-Omega, Samsung, Vedanta Ltd, SAIL, Coal India etc

Placement Experience

3.5

The placement of NIT Raipur is good overall but average considering it is an institute of national importance. Majority of the students leave with a job in hand after their graduation despite their branch. The number of placement offers received by CSE/IT is higher than that received by core branches like Electrical/Mechanical/Civil/Metallurgy etc. More than 200 companies come to recruit through campus placement and highest package received in the academic year 2017-18 was 54 LPA. Some of the Major recruiters include Coal India Ltd, Vedanta Limited, Tata Motors, SAIL, Bhilai Steel Plant, NTPC, Alpha Omega, ONGC, IOCL etc

College Events

4.5

NIT Raipur excels in this part. The major events conducted throughout the academic calendar are E-Summit- the entrepreneurship meet conducted by E-Cell of college, Aavartan- the technical fest conducted by Technocracy, Samar- The sports fest by Shaurya, Eclectika- The cultural fest. Other minor events include Aavishkar- Research Fest, Abhinay- Dramatics Fest, TEDx, Shruti- Music Fest, Go Green- Environment fest etc. The major fest is center for attraction for the entire state and usually, more than 10k crowd visits the campus during major fest. Almost all the weekend, either a club or committee conducts a fest.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure of NIT, IIT is solely in the hands of MHRD ministry but the hostel and mess fees are decided by college authorities. According to the current fee structure, tuition fees of NIT, Raipur is 1,25,000 with a full waived fee for SC, ST, and PWD students. Remission of the fee is decided on the economic status of student's family, annual income less than 1LPA forces full Remission while income less than 5LPA forces remission of 2/3rd part of fees. Hostel and mess fees stand at 32,000 for entire year and part of which is refundable

Fees and Financial Aid

The government recently launched the Vidya Laxmi portal for providing financial aid to students of national importance (NIT, Raipur is one of them). Tents of recognized banks can be seen inside campus during admission process to provide loans to the students without any hectic process. The state and central government have many scholarship programs for students here and private scholarship by Jindal group, Birla group etc are also provided

Campus Life

2.5

The Gender ratio in IITs and NITs is always a concern where Girls to boys ratio is hardly 1:10 which government has decided to better it using the super numeric seats. Regular workshop and short-term training program are conducted in association with many companies by college authorities. Students despite being from all part of the country live here in great harmony with each other. Religious festivals like Deepawali, Eid, Christmas, Makar Sankranti are celebrated together and various programs by the cultural committee are conducted on Independence and Republic day. There is high security on the campus and there has been no case of harassment based on Sex, race or economic status according to my knowledge. Students politics is banned in the state by the government hence no case of casualties related to it. Students after joining various clubs and committees in the college develop good bonding with others in the college.

Hostel Facilities

1.5

One major drawback of NIT, Raipur is the lack of hostel seats in college premises which forces students of even 1st year to stay outside the campus on PGs and private hostels. Even the girl's hostels don't have adequate seats to accommodate all the girl students. For boys, only around 1 in every 4 student gets the privilege to stay in campus hostel based on CGPA, all the room are shared and most of them being 3 seaters ( some being 2 seaters). Hostel A, B, D, F are for 1st-year boys, Hostel E for 1st-year girls, Hostel H for 2nd,3rd, 4th-year boys, Hostel C for MCA and M.Tech boys, Hostel G and PG-Hostel for 2nd,3rd and 4th-year girls. Students are not so fond of the food served in the mess but they are still edible and better than most of the college food I have tasted

Alumni/Alumna

NIT, Raipur has a Student-Alumni relation wing which keeps the bond between present students and Alumni intact and alumni have a good idea about everything happening in college. Alumni are known to be of great help whenever required be it funding related to any project or problems faced by students in any part of the country. Alumni are well connected through students using social media. There is no ragging by senior students and they are always present to help juniors anything related to studies, projects or placement

Exam Structure

The theory subjects in a particular semester consist of total 120 marks which include 15x2 = 30 marks for 2 Class Test (CTs), 20 marks for Teacher Assessment (TA) and remaining 70 marks for End Semester Examination. Minimum of 25/70 is required for End Semester exam, 12/20 for TA and overall 42/120 in total to pass the subject. Practical subjects have a total of 50 marks in which 30 marks are of Teacher Assessment and 20 marks of the end sem practical exam and 30 is passing marks out of 50. Labs are well furnished and have qualified lab attendants for looking after the equipment in the lab and generally, each lab has 3 classes in a week while theory classes of each subject are 4.

Admission

The admission process for all the IIT, NIT was governed through JOSAA counseling which conducted 7 seven online rounds based on Ranks Obtained in JEE-MAINS and JEE-ADVANCE. There was an extra round of counseling called Spot Round to fill up vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs (Vacant seats of IITs were left vacant and there was no spot round for counseling). The notification of JOSAA counseling is released after the result of JEE-ADVANCE ie around Mid of June and the choice filling and locking of choices starts about a week later. Students are given 4-7 days for filling up their choices of College-Branch combination depending upon their own preferences. The result of 1st round of counseling is declared around end of june and students are required to Physically report at the nearest reporting centre according to their will with all the necessary documents required for admission, students have three choices their ie Slide/Float/Freeze for further rounds. At the end of 7th round of counseling, students need to physically report at college into which they have to take admission. PS- 1) Students who don't report to reporting centre after they are alloted a seat will have ther candidature canceled 2) Conduction of spot round solely depends upon Government. It may or may not happen.

Faculty

3.5

Faculties here are highly fond of research and encourage students to do the same by giving various projects related to latest advancement in the related subject. Most of the Professors have a doctorate (Ph.D.) or equivalent degree and at least a master's degree is required to get faculty job here. Recruitment of faculties takes place every year through an open circular on institute website.
