Remarks
Good: extremely value for money and has a strict discipline approach to studies. Its a college and not an MBA institute. Can have more case study based learning and more industry interaction would help.
Entrance Preview
CAT, scores 98.25 percentile and I opted because it was in Kolkata and I had compulsion to be in Kolkata at that time.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course structure is very academic with minimal case study based approach. Also, industry linkages could be much better in terms of employees coming and giving lectures about corporate work culture and ethics. In terms of research, it is at par to other MBA colleges. Since it is affiliated to Calcutta University, it has good options.
Internships Opportunities
The college definately helps in getting internships. There is a formal process of campus recruitment and the general stipend is close to 7-10K a month. Companies from all domains Finance, Marketing, IT/ Systems an HR come - however the number of opportunities in Marketing are far higher.
Placement Experience
The placements are reasonable. Given the money that we spend about INR 1 Lakh, I got a starting salary of 3.5 Lakhs which was a good return on investment. The opportunities are limited but quite decent. However, if you want some good opportunities in Finance, you need to search yourself.
College Events
There were 3 key events that happened in college. Once was the placement week during which many companies used to come and give their pre-placement talk and then there were either exams or Personal interviews for selection of candidates.Second was the Alumni meet called Paradigm. We invited the alumni from various parts of the country and they used to hold talks and share experiences with the batch. This was followed by a gala dinner.Lastly, was the college fest, where students from other colleges used to come and participate in many business events and competition.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure was very feasible and affordable. The payment had to be made up-front at the beginning of the year. The total money spent in 2 years on tution was 95 Lakhs. Since this was a day school, there was no hostel and hence no expenses. The library was well equipped and hence, the fees were value for money. Even a strong wifi connection was also available.
Fees and Financial Aid
There weren't any scholarship programs of the college that I was aware of. However, if one stood 1st in class or there were other cut-offs of CAT score, where they use to exempt a certain part of the fees because of that.
Campus Life
The campus life was uite good for the time that we spent in college. There was a lot of intermingling of students across different streams - Mktg, IT, Finance, etc as well as other departments like Sports management, business management, human resource management, etc.In terms of gender ratio - it was skewed towards males. Extra-curricular was nothing available as there was no playground etc.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel was something which was available only for outside Kolkata students. The cost was 8000/ pm including food. However, the quality of the hostel was deplorable and I had heard recently that they have improved that quality. The facilities were minimal and sparse with basic amenities like light, fans (no A/c, Wi-Fi, etc). Since outside Kolkata studients were in large number, it was difficult getting a seat and one had to apply beforehand.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is quite varied and vast. Some have been very helpful, as they keep coming to recruit from colleges from where they have passed out. Some other alumni do not want to keep in touch with the colleges. My interaction with a senior alumni had deeply impacted by decision to join this institute as well as as apply at that place for internship.
Exam Structure
The Exams were only twice a year with very few weekly tests or case studies. Hence, the time spent was largely relaxed. It would have been much better if there was a little more stress and hectic schedule. The classes were packed from 10am - 5pm. However, many times professors did not come and this resulted in us either going to the library or doing some placement related work. The industry based learning/ seminars were very infrequent and can definitely be increased.
Admission
Applied for CAT, got a good percentile. Procured the form online as I knew some seniors in IISWBM. When selected, gave 2 rounds of GD and then a Personal Interview. The administration process was very slow, as the entire process got over in June and the session started in August, much later than most colleges.
Faculty
The faculty is renowned in the Kolkata context, however, as I mentioned earlier the industry linkage can be surely improved. The HOD was quite good (Dr. KK Roy) and the Finance faculty was the better among the lot. IT and HR was very weak. Presentation skills and live case studies alongwith interaction with other MBA institutes can surely improve.
