Remarks
As I was interested in taking up higher studies in premier institutions such as IITs or NITs, in the fields of aerospace or Mechanical (design), I opted for NIT Calicut. I was told that older NITs are better than newer IITs and hence I applied for top IITs and NITs and got selected at NITC. The classes started from Aug 1st 2019.
Course Curriculum Overview
In most M.tech classes, the class strength is quite less (usually 20-25 in other specializations, 13 in ours), which means that the faculty student ratios are quite good. I took up Machine design as it was of interest to me (Aerospace was first, but no NIT was offering it). I had first got Manufacturing technology when I joined, but in internal sliding (in the institute not CCMT), I got machine design. The faculty's are mostly from the IITs or IISc, and in Machine design, they are highly knowledgeable, down to earth and friendly. Teaching however, differs from faculty to faculty. The student should be ready to handle many course seminars, assignments and projects.
Placement Experience
Due to Covid, the placements for the present academic year was hit. Even then, GE offered 12 CTC and one student from machine design was placed. Two students, a friend of mine and I, got placed in TCS. Other than that, in the second semester itself, companies would usually come for internships, and those opportunities are excellent. The student can carry out the final year project (which is for one year duration) in the company itself, and then, usually, the compony employs the student once the course is complete, in most cases.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees are reasonable, though it has increased for next batches. Other than hostel deposits (which was around 10k), we had to pay 35k-39k per semester. If the student has a category, it will be significantly less. Other than that, hostel and the mess bill should be paid monthly. A stipend of Rs. 12,400 is given every month, which should cover the monthly hostel and mess bills (which used to be under 5k for me), and other expenditure. For project work, a contingency fund of 5k can also be availed. Faculties may also have additional funding for certain project works.
Campus Life
M.Tech students usually don't actively participate in most clubs, though many exist for UG students. The library has good number of books, though it can be improved. A newer library is now used, which is probably better. The borrowing system is also very well managed. Two fests, Tatva and Ragam are annually held. Classrooms are well equipped with blackboards, white boards, projectors and projector screens in each classroom.
