Remarks
I selected IIT Bombay, based on word of mouth. It was the top ranked college in the country and had a very reputed name at the time of my admission. I didn't analysed the various aspects at the time of joining, and my decision was mostly based on the untrustworthy information available with acquaintances and coaching institutes(they don't have much knowhow of the career after entrance exams). Timeline of the admission process vary every year.
Course Curriculum Overview
I always had a fascination(still have) for mechanical engineering. I feel Faculty:student ratio is appropriate, Professors are available any time students try to reach them, whether it is professional advice or academic advice. Faculties are very highly qualified, almost all the professors have a PhD from internationally reputed universities along with significant post-doc experience. For first year courses(common courses for every department), faculty:student ratio is very low. To overcome the issue Teaching Assistants(TA) are recruited which are either graduate student or senior UG student who had performed exceptionally well in that course. The TAs help the student in their course-related problems during weekly sessions. Overall, the learning experience is not so great for 1st year courses due to many factors- Large batch size during instruction, lack of clarity in instruction and performance-oriented atmosphere particularly intense during the 1st year. In the subsequent years the quality of teaching improves drastically as the students take up the courses in their respective departments. Curriculum and the course content is still a bit outdated, but recently the focus on practical training has improved greatly. The total marks distribution for the courses is distributed across quizzes, mid-term, end-term and course projects, schedule of which is decided by the instructor, mostly at the beginning of the instructions.
Internships Opportunities
Similar trends for internships as for placements. Not everybody secures an internship through campus but MOST get the placement. Stipends vary from - 5k to 1.5LakhI did a winter internship at an event management company in Bangalore.
Placement Experience
Placement opportunities mostly depend on amount of hard-work(in the respective field) one puts in throughout his college life. Great opportunities are available for IT, finance and consult sectors. Commonly, CS and EE students grab the top IT opportunities, while the remainder fight to get into the above-mentioned sectors. Few students passionate about their core branch(except CS and EE) struggle to find the jobs, even at low packages. Some of them opt for higher studies at international universities in future. Some comparative placement stats-IT- Great number of jobs(12 to 22 lpa-uniform distribution, 22 to 35 lpa - few, 35+lpa rare)Consult- Decent number of jobs (12 to 18 lpa)Core(except CS & EE)- few jobs (6 to 14 lpa, 14+ rare)You can check the placement stats, but not much insightful data(Look for medians rather than means)
Fee Structure And Facilities
Apart from the tuition fees(frequently raised)-1.25 lakh there is a hostel fees(mess and accomodation) - 25k per semester. All other fees are included in tuition fees. There are certain concessions in fees for category students and students from low-income families(MCM scholarship). There is another scholarship for girls who perform exceptionally well in JEE-Advanced(Desai Sethi scholarship). There might be a few which can be checked at IIT portal. There is also an opportunity(merit-based) for senior UG students(second year onwards) to take up the role of Teaching Assistant for a single course per semester(stipend~24 k per sem).
Campus Life
Major annual fests- Mood Indigo(cultural), Tech Fest(technical), E-summit(Entrepreneurial), Abhyuday(Social) [Timeline-late December to early February] apart from various Department fests. There are well established clubs for most of the mainstream cultural activities. Similarly, the sports infrastructure is one of the best at a university level. Technical teams have been consistently performing well in international competitions. Student culture is also pretty great- help is given to those who ask for it. There has been not much innovation (or at least efforts for that) or initiative in any of the domains in past couple of years(maybe you can be the game-changer)[Note- Review is based on pre-lockdown era]. A good collection of technical books(only) is available at the central library. Apart from that login from institute id provides you the access to most of the leading Journals' articles. All the clubs are run and managed by students.
