Entrance Preview
I took CAT (they did not declare percentile in those days), and got admission into MDI, SPJIMR and IIFT among others. I selected SPJIMR as I wanted to study in Mumbai and SPJIMR was the best ranked among these three. The admission process includes CAT score, essay forms and group interview followed by psychometric test
Course Curriculum Overview
Very good curriculum. The first year is common with general courses like Economics, HR and OB, Finance, Costing, Analytics, Accounting etc. and the second year curriculum contains the electives. I chose Marketing as my Major and Operations as my Minor. The entire curriculum is case study based.
Internships Opportunities
Yes. I had interned in Tata Motors and got stipend of Rs. 10000 per month (in 2003) The industry internship happens in September - October for two months.
Placement Experience
100 % placements, which get over within 2 to 3 days. In our year, the major companies were GE, HLL, P&G, Johnson & Johnson, Cadbury (Mondelez), Times Group, HSBC, Citibank, Infosys, i2, Wipro etc. The top package was upwards of INR 10 lakhs and median was around 5 lakhs (pretty high figures in 2004).
College Events
SPANDAN - annual reunion day, Lock Stock and Trade - annual trading competition - gets a lot of participants from top B-Schools across India Annual Management Conclave - gets top industry and education personalities as participants.
Fee Structure And Facilities
In 2002-04, the total fee was only Rs. 2.75 Lakhs for both years including hostel fees. Cost of food and laptop was separate. The fees could be paid in two installments. Even today, their fees are the least expensive among the top B-Schools. The fees are very good value for money and banks are very open to giving loans towards the same.
Fees and Financial Aid
I did not avail any loans, but most banks are happy to offer loans for admission to SPJIMR's flagship program. Plus, there are ample scholarships offered on the second year fees by GE, Tata etc.
Campus Life
Gender ratio is about 2:1 (male: female). People come from all states. There are no reservations or quotas. There are a lot of clubs for pursuing hobbies, interests, sports, and entrepreneurship. Sports facilities are limited on campus but the college has a tie-up with the adjoining Andheri Sports Complex where students can go and play all sports for a very nominal fee.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities are triple sharing, separate for boys and girls. Each floor of the hostel has facilities like a common room with TV and indoor games, coffee machine, water purifier, washing machine etc. The mess food is eggatarian but very tasty and wholesome. There are three canteens, two inside the academic building and one adjoining the hostel.
Alumni/Alumna
Yes. The alumni network is very active and seniors are very helpful. I have not had much interaction but there is a very active job portal and an alumni portal. There are regular alumni meets held across different cities of India and even abroad.
Exam Structure
Very frequent exams. A lot of weightage is given to surprise class tests which may come with a couple of hours' notice as well. Sometimes the tests used to be open-book type as well. The day started at 8:30 and ended well past midnight. The last few months in the second year are more chilled out.
Faculty
Very good faculty. Most of them are Ph.Ds and almost all have extensive industry experience. There were visiting faculty from top corporates and even from abroad as well. The core faculty strength is pretty strong and most faculty reside on campus. Almost all the faculty members were highly qualified from top B-Schools and colleges.
