Remarks

Assam Engineering College is truly a very good College the course structure, Infrastructure and faculty members stand outs. One thing I would like to mention that even the course fees is quite reasonable.

Entrance Preview

I took Assam JAT(Joint Admission Test). Technical Education Director in the state of Assam organizes Assam Joint Admission Test every year for the students who wish to gain admission in the first year of UG Professional Courses. Total marks is 300(physics, chemistry and maths each 100 marks paper). I scored 101, and finally choose Assam Engineering College, Guwahati (Electrical Engineering). This college is very good in terms of infrastructure and faculties.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

Electrical Engineering consists of 8 semesters. First two semesters Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, elements of civil engineering, English communication and tech writing, strength of materials, Basic electrical engineering, Engineering Graphics, Intro to computing, workshops and labs. Advance courses on Electrical Engineering starts from 3rd semester and also includes Computer Programming. Also, the program includes Lab test, Research and a lot of practical.7 and 8 semester main focus is on training(on job), projects, and Viva.

Internships Opportunities

No, they don't but they are planning to start internship soon. The Training & Placement Cell TPC is run jointly by the Training & Placement Officer (TPO) and the Training & Placement Secretary (TPS). They are not just concentrating on offering jobs to the students, it has been putting serious efforts to improve the quality of the students by organizing trainings, motivational talks, seminars, workshops, etc. through best-available experts. The TPC is planning to start the Internship soon.

Placement Experience

3

The TPC is run jointly by the Training & Placement Officer (TPO) and the Training & Placement Secretary (TPS). They are assisted by other TP Coordinators comprising of student representatives from various disciplines. It is not just concentrating on offering jobs to the students, it has been putting serious efforts to improve the quality of the students by organizing trainings, motivational talks, seminars, workshops, etc. through best-available experts. Organizing technical seminars, group discussions, awareness programs, pre-placement talks, inviting prominent people to AEC has been another hallmark of the TPC. The placement is quite good, it was almost 90% in the year 2007 and 2008. But there was a decline in the year 2009, 2010. But, placement increases again from the year 2011. Companies : CTS, TCS, Wipro, Hindustan Petroleum, IBM, Tata Technologies, Ashok Leyland, Oil India Ltd., ONGC, IOCL, etc. The average salary in the year 2008 was 3.5 Lacs/Annum.

College Events

4.5

AEC pyrokinesis, Annual functions, Fresher parties, Inter college Cultural events, Inter College Sport events etc. The biggest event is Assam Engineering College Pyrokinesis. This is held in the college campus and is celebrated in a grand way. It includes the participation of various other colleges in Guwahati and Assam like IIT Guwahati, Guwahati Commerce College, Cotton College, Guwahati MedicaL College etc. This even includes sports competitions like cricket, football.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure is quite feasible. The approximate fee to be paid per year for B.E. course is around Rs. 11,000.00. This fee comprises of two segments: College admission fee: around Rs. 2,000.00, Miscellaneous (Union, Festival, Magazine, Welfare, Poor Fund, Enrolment, I.Card, Caution Money, Transport, laboratory, Internet, T&P Cell, Library, Medical): around Rs. 9,000.00.

Fees and Financial Aid

There are several scholarship schemes available. Loans can also be availed from SBI but it is highly unlikely for anyone to take loan as the fee is minimal. The scholarships are:1. NEC: available for all students of northeast.2. Minority scholarship: for minority communities.3. Caste scholarship: for students belonging to scheduled castes and tribes.

Campus Life

4

The campus life is average compared to any national level institute but having said that the college is at par with the national institutes with regards to every other thing. The gender ratio is preferable to woman but that is true for every engineering college. Extracurricular activities are well promoted , dancing drama and singing being the top priority. Quiz and debates are few and rare . sports is also promoted fairly. Many competitions are organised from time to time. The student diversity is enormous. Students from different backgrounds come here to study and tolerance towards diversity is high. No major case of intolerance has ever occurred in college.

Hostel Facilities

4

There are total 8 hostels in the Campus. 7 Boys Hostel and a big Girls Hostel. Hostellers are to deposit the required security money and seat rent money (total in cash Rs. 8000.00 approx.) to the respective Hostel Superintendent. Hostel Superintendents will deposit the seat rent money to the Office of the Principal and collect receipt.

Alumni/Alumna

The seniors were really very co-operative and helpful. Regarding the Alumni network, AEC has a strong Aklumni Network like for example below: The AEC Class Batch 88 – an alumni association of the 1988 batch of the Assam Engineering College (AEC) – organized a scholarship presentation function titled ‘Initiative’ in the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Panbazar, Guwahati on February 14 last. The fund comprises individual contributions from the alumni of the 1988 batch. The alumni association, with the aim of serving the AEC community as well as society as a whole, awarded scholarships to two students of the Assam Engineering College. A final-semester student, Eashan Saikia of the Mechanical Engineering branch, was awarded Rs 25,000 along with a citation for his meritorious and innovative feats. Another first-year needy student, Bikash Deori Tipiga of the Mechanical Engineering branch of the college, was extended a financial assistance of Rs 40,000. In addition, as a small gesture towards fulfilling social responsibility, the association announced construction of toilets and bathroom in the complex of the Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan, a children’s home, at Sundarbari near the Assam Engineering College. The function was graced by former principals, teachers and students of the Assam Engineering College. Professor AK Padmapati, ex-principal of the AEC, chaired the function. Noted economist Amiya Sarma also graced the programme and delivered an inspiring speech. Students of the Assam Engineering College showcased their talent during a cultural programme. Kailash Rabha enthralled the audience playing the saxophone.

Exam Structure

There were frequent tests (biweekly) and Viva. The lab test and Project related test were not so hectic but sometimes it will stretch till evening. The regular semester exams were quite hectic as the course was lengthy. The gap between the exams were a relief but the examination puts a lot of pressure.

Faculty

3.5

The faculty of my college were good as I already mentioned above. Most of them were PHDs/or highly qualified. The teaching includes lectures, presentations, workshops, labs etc. Most of the faculty were qualified and were enjoying what they were doing.

Placements are not really good in our college, it is more of a research institute so it mainly focuses on PhD as PhD strength is good. Higher education is more prefered here but placement scenario is also good

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is very relevant and is different for different branches according to their needs. I was interested in civil engineering and chose the course and find the curriculum intersting and relevant for me . The curriculum offers subject which are important for real world applications, like in civil engineering it's offers subjects like building construction, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, material testing, serving, etc. The course curriculum is very good but the teaching methods needs improvement like more digitalization . The exams frequency and timings are neither too late nor too early, they are perfectly planned and executed.

Course Curriculum Overview:

There exists a good teaching staff that's why the course is very easy to understand also teachers give us good examples also do practicals so that's students understand the course easily . I see that there exist a low no of equipments in practical lab compare to it's students ratio so if they have a good no of equipments then all students get equipment to do experiment without any waste of time . Time is good as compare to marks and the first 30 marks are beginner level the other 40 marks are intermediate level and the remaining 30 Marks are advanced level questions in a question paper for the students they published.

Placement Experience:

The placement scenario is quite good, with several reputed companies like General Electric, Power Grid Corporation of India, Goldman Sachs, among others recruiting 94 percent of the students in the college. The placement takes place in three rounds, one testing one's aptitude, followed by an hour round, finally leading on to a technical round. Mock interview and job cracking sessions are organized regularly, both by the departments, and also the Training and Placement Cell, to prepare students for the interviews and examinations going forward. The Training and Placement Cell also provides internship opportunities at the end of third year for the students, based on their aptitude and abilities

I have mostly positive remarks about college except for the fact that the college is situated really far from mainstream north India. Train connectivity is not that strong to rest of country. But despite that the college is extremely good in the sense of learning, meeting new innovative minds, and of course placements and jobs.
