Remarks
Being from a core manufacturing background, Operations Management role was an ideal choice for me and SJMSOM, IIT Bombay is renowned for the same. That has been my primary motivation. Apart from that, it has been ranked consistently among the top 10 B schools in the country. Moreover, the smaller batch size meant ample opportunities to participate in college events, club events and to have good networking among batches.
Course Curriculum Overview
MBA curriculum at IITs usually follows a semester window instead of the traditional trimester. SJMSOM is renowned in the industry for Operations Management and that was my primary motivation to take up the course. The student to faculty ratio is somewhere around 5:1 owing to the smaller batch size. Interactions are always fruitful and classes are quite engaging. Term exams are difficult, being a premier institute, and you have to apply your business acumen, on top of academic knowledge to have an edge.
Internships Opportunities
Summer internship process starts as soon as the 1st-year session begins. It is a bit hectic initially, and you have to cope up with the pressure. That's what builds you up for an MBA life ahead. Top firms come for an Internship placement with an average stipend around 2 lacs for 2 months.
Placement Experience
As already discussed, placements are one of the best in the country. Top MNCs come for recruitment, with an average salary ranging between 20 to 21 LPA. Students also participate in various corporate competitions, securing placements through that route as well.
Fees and Financial Aid
Per semester fees is around 2.2 lacs, totalling around 10 lacs over the 2 years period. Top students are offered scholarships from various dedicated funds. Summer internship opportunities are one of the best in the country with top firms coming for placement. I got to intern at a Project Finance Consultant firm with a stipend of 2 lacs for a period of 2 months. The highest stipend was 3.2 lacs and an average of 2 lacs. Final placement opportunities are somewhat limited, however, that is generally compensated with a high PPO conversion rate. Generally, around 52-55 students secure PPO every year out of around 110 students. Thus there is less competition for the remaining students in the final placement. I got placed at one of the top national banks in the country, with a salary of 18.5 LPA. Average salary is around 20 LPA.
Campus Life
Campus life can't be expressed in words. You'll get to interact with a diverse range of students inside the sprawling and occasionally awe-stocking IIT Bombay campus. Spreading over such a vast expanse, you'll never get bored of exploring newer things. Indeed it's referred to as the Mecca of Indian education. There's not a sport that's not available at the campus. All in all, it can't get better than this.
Hostel Facilities
MBA students are offered hostel 15 and 16. It's a three towered, 10 floors each hostel, and MBA students are offered rooms on the top floors. First-year accommodation is of twin sharing, 2nd year is solo. Food quality is pretty decent with a special menu available daily for you to buy. The hostel is affordable enough and you won't require any external PGs.
Interview Experience
2 step procedure. WAT and PI. WAT topics are generally based on current affairs. PI consists of a panel of 2 panellists with the interview generally based on past work experience and general current affairs questions. Being an MBA college located in IIT, expect a lot of technical questions from graduation.
