Remarks
I have had a wonderful experience, with loads of learning, new friends etc. There were issues around placements and managements handling them but eventually it turned out fine for a lot of the classmates one way or the other.
Entrance Preview
SNAP test. Do not remember the score now though, I was interested in the media and communication field and the specialization offered was right.
Course Curriculum Overview
Curriculum is vast covering all major components of the media industry. 1st semester covers all 4 specialization subjects of Journalism, AV production, advertising & PR so that every student is aware of all basic concepts and a bigger picture understanding of the media industry. Post 2nd semester, individual specializations takes precedence. Focus is on conceptual aspects as well as case study learning, projects, assignments, internships, media festivals, industry interface etc.
Internships Opportunities
Yes college provided with 3 internships. Though more support getting internships on time would be better. Stipend was low to none, only travel compensation was covered.
Placement Experience
From what I recollect almost 90% were placed or in procedure by the end of the last semester. But the placement cell needed to improve a lot back then. FYI, we were also the batch post the recession year. Placements had just picked up. Average salaries were 3-4 Lac PA All major media houses were involved and had intake.
College Events
Round the year, there were cultural and management fests and industry conferences. They are completely managed by student clubs of the batch. One which I organised with a team of core members was called South Asian Youth Peace Meet & we managed to pull a participation of students from 8 different countries with leading speakers. All aspects of the event management for 7 months was completely handled by the group with minimal interference but full guidance from the staff.
Fee Structure And Facilities
I had to take an education loan. I repaid it with my job after placement. Annual fee for 2 years was 4 Lac apart from hostel & food charges which were 65k and 25k per year, if I correctly remember. But it was pretty much similar to all other leading colleges of its league, in my understanding.
Fees and Financial Aid
Availed of an educational loan on my own. Not aware of loan facility from college college had student discounts from laptop companies.
Campus Life
The campus location away from the city makes it so and student population of almost 2000 from 3 colleges on a hill top makes an outsider even more interested. Students coming from all over the country from best of the institutes of undergrad courses makes it a very cosmopolitan and diverse pool of people across ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation etc. Gender ratio was skewed towards higher number of women in SIMC. Could say 60-40 situation. There were many activity clubs, so there was always something happening. The infrastructure is very good.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel was very good and clean. There were some initial hiccups but the 2 year stay was comfortable. There was no way to cook food on your own though. There was no kitchen and we had to depend on maggi cooked in kettles for late night binges which was very often considering we were working round the clock. The food was also a problem in the mess. I never remember it to be tasty. It was almost always below average.
Alumni/Alumna
SIMC has a large alumni network in all of media industry in India. Seniors are always helpful with information network, placement opportunities and internships. Every year an alumni meet is held where key matters of the industry are spoken about apart from the gathering and evening celebrations.
Exam Structure
Exams and assignments were very frequent. It was a hectic 2 year course but living in a hostel with all classmates makes it simpler to execute also including various projects and festivals and internships 2 years there was minimal outside social life apart from within hostels and college.
