Asutosh College, Journalism and Masscomm Hons

Remarks

Campus is under maintained, small and cramped, inadequate facilities. Too many people too less resources per person management is very unprofessional and not open to suggestions and innovation and modern practices.

Entrance Preview

There was no entrance examination. Admission was based on 12 standard board results. Selection was on the basis of cut off marks. I wanted to pursue media related education and this college had one of the oldest Journalism and Mass communication departments in the city.

Course Curriculum Overview

2

Course structure is pretty elaborate with a decent focus on real world practises for preparing a candidate for the hands on job. Though more can be done to reduce too much of textual theory and more of practical hands on knowledge. Reseach projects were present but more industry training and press visits and on the job vocational training can prepare the students far better and they can be already equipped for a seamless transition into a job.

Internships Opportunities

No there was no option of internship during our sessions, cant tell about now. Since the course of Calcutta University is more theory oriented there lies the problem.

Placement Experience

1.5

There was no placement or industry tours what so ever. No campus recruitment, no placement cell. Students were all on their own to get going and do something on their own. Though once a recruiter came to the campus for a brief exam, Cognizant, but the requirement from them was almost none.

College Events

3

Musical fests, drama club, singing club, etc all existed. But after college since it was so exhausting, no one got the enthusiasm to participate with proper vigour! Music competition was more prominent as a lot of college bands participated and politics in campus was the order of the day.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fees under CU are feasible and not back breaking in terms of the money. That is the only plus for the course maybe.Fees were nominal around - Admission fee - 5000Semester fees around - 2000and some development and other miscellaneous fees also existed.

Fees and Financial Aid

No loan facility was offered or any kind of scholarship or financial assistance was available. Students had to pay on their own or get help personally if there was any financial difficulty.

Campus Life

1.5

Gender ratio was pretty decent. In fact there were more girls in my batch than boys probably. Workshops did not happen much. Sports and extracurricular was there but not everyone used to participate. Politics in campus was rampant and very active and used to disturb the environment of the campus.

Hostel Facilities

1.5

There was no hostel facilities, canteen was dirty and unhygienic, cramped. The entire campus was in 2-3 buildings so there was no place for hostel facilities. The campus consisted of main building, annexe 1 and annexe 2. Dont know about the situation now but I dont think anything major has changed.

Alumni/Alumna

I am not much in touch with the seniors, though I am in touch with my batchmates through social media. Social media like FB has some pages for the college alumni.

Exam Structure

Exams are all theory oriented with less stress on practical tests. Practical tests seemed more like a formality and second priority. Theory and mugging up became the order of the day. Exams of CU are notorious for long answers, beating around the bush, trying to drive the same point home again and again. Objective questions and questions that demanded rational and analytical answers were never asked! Which I feel is must for education nowadays.

Faculty

2

Faculty of the college is decent, since more of a traditional approach to the course existed so there was more stress on textual theory and knowledge, which I feel is a let down. Too much of Journalistic theory and less practical training doesnt make sense. Faculty were decently trained and equipped to impart classes as per curriculum but nothing innovative or extraordinary.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose the course only because of our HOD, but after completing my course, he left the course. He has helped us with all the things like web development and seo skills. By doing it practically for every student, he offers a domain for every student. I had difficulty with Google Ads & meta ads because it was taught by another faculty. The exam times were different by 3 months.

Placement Experience:

Till now I am seeing in my own eyes that in previous year, there is a 270 student in marketing and now right now the 15 student left to place and rest of the team are already placed to a many companies like ENYF Flipkart in Bandan Bank ICICI bank in a mini sector in FMCG also and FMCT also, but and retail, but I told that the ratio of placement is too higher than other college and also giving the good package is. The main thing with the job rule should be maintain the package.

It is one of the renowned institutes in Kolkata. But after admission got the clear msg. It is renowned for its engineering degree only not for PGDM or MBA. They even dont have proper faculties to teach students. I majored in Business Analytics, but back to then in 2019 there was not even one teacher who have subject knowledge.

The good things I like is that the teachers teach through the slides prepared by himself and also told student to prepare PowerPoint presentation and deliver in the class and also give different case study to solve the problem. Only missing thing is that the student are getting less practical knowledge as compare to theory paper.

The good thing about this college are the activities that take place every Saturday, which is quite interesting and knowledgeable. The bad thing about the college is that the departments are divided on the basis of their courses so the students do not gather as a whole bunch of college.
