Remarks
As a private university, and when compared to VIT, Manipal and KIIT, I guess SRM should be the choice. Opportunities are immense and really fruitful if one realizes how to utilize them. Professors have great contacts at times. And the student teams and events have a lot to offer. More than the academic curriculum at times.
Course Curriculum Overview
Flexible Choice Based Credit system is followed and frequent assignments and tests keep students busy throughout the semester. Special attention is given to practical subjects and labs. Personality Development classes are organised by the Career Development Centre. Additional Foreign Language classes are also a part of the curriculum. Projects at the end of the third year and final year help in the application of the theories learnt and overall development. Industrial Visits are organised by the department and as well as by the local chapters of SAE.
Placement Experience
The University has made it compulsory for its students to undertake courses ranging from learning how to code, to aptitude training and Soft Skill Development, all aimed at cracking placement procedure exams. In the Service and IT sector, all the big software giants visit the campus. From Microsoft, Google to Amazon. However, for the past two years placement has not been particularly great for the core branches. 74% of Mechanical Engineering students who had opted for placement, were placed in core Mechanical companies in 2019.
College Events
Every semester there is a national level fest. Every odd semester, Aarush, the national level techno-management fest is held, where the most viral musicians, stand up comedians and personalities are invited. Every even semester a national level cultural fest is held, named Milan which receives the same level of attention and fanfare as Aarush. Each fest goes on for 4 days preceded by numerous roadshows and followed by After-party.
Fee Structure And Facilities
For the Class of 2020 pass out, Fee per year for Mechanical Engineering department was Rs 215000 per year. This does not include exam fees and other additional charges. Neither does this include the hostel and mess fee. Hostel and Mess Fee per year for non AC room is Rs 115000. All fees are paid through online payment and the system is completely transparent.
Fees and Financial Aid
No, I didn't take an education loan. But scholarship facilities exist for the extra meritorious students, that is the ones with the highest CGPA in each department.
Campus Life
Campus life is vibrant at SRM University. Some kind of event is always happening somewhere on the campus. From roadshows, MUNs, quizzes, debates, open-mics, movie screenings, workshops, conferences and all. There's a Music Club, Literary Club, Dance Club and various departmental student teams. It's worth to be part of any of these student teams as they're crucial in developing and evolving as a character.
Hostel Facilities
Quite good. The mess food has improved and life is quite good. Although the entry-exit restrictions can be a bit lenient. The Chennai heat can be a problem for some people. But there's the option of AC Hostel with centralised AC room, so that is not an issue at all. Although technically Coffee Maker and Induction Cooker aren't allowed, practically they're used extensively with the warden's knowledge.
Alumni/Alumna
Alumni network exists and events are held to connect with past SRM passouts. But more than formal events and connections, the seniors who guide the students at the student teams develop their own informal network and act as brilliant mentors.
Admission
Mechanical Engineering industries are concentrated in TN in India. Having always been interested in machines, Mechanical Engineering was the ideal stream for me. And SRM University has the most reputable Mechanical department among private universities. So I opted for B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from SRM. At first, you appear for the SRMJEE examination.
Faculty
The faculty is highly qualified, but not highly exposed to practical experience and regionalism is prevalent. Everyone has an M.Tech degree. And most have PhDs. Others are working on their PhD. In the upcoming years, the college has decided to only employ professors who have a PhD. Also, language and approachability of professors is a significant issue.
