Nikhil Agrawal's Review On IIT Kanpur - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITK], Kanpur

I think there are so many positive remarks for my college. I love my college because there were no restrictions. College canteens are open all night so we can roam in night and enjoy the food too. CCD in our college was subsidised such that we can enjoy every bit of it at only 1/3rd amount. There was 24*7 medical facility. And at the end the most beautiful thing of IIT Kanpur is Peacocks. Which makes your rainy stay in IIT Kanpur memorable.

As most of you know that IIT Kanpur is known for its Academic's. They have slightly tougher academics as compared to other IIT's. Although teaching staff is good enough to support you time to time. Thus it is more fun there doing academics and stuff. We had 2 labs per week which are fully equipped and maintained, proper safety measures were used during performance in Lab. A continuous feedback is also maintained for all lab activities. We have some great apparatus in our lab that can generate movement of earthquake as well. Apart from my department all other department's lab are also full equipped. I also worked in Material Science lab for my project and have a great experience there also. There is also so many students from IIT Kanpur who have published their research papers in international journals.

As everyone hears every year about more than 90% placements in IITs. And as we hear they are truth also. Every year more than 90% of students are placed. Apart from this some students go for higher studies also like M. Tech, M. Sc. , PhD, MBA etc. Our college also provide a platform for many of the interns. Some of interns work with proffessors on their ongoing research work which are paid a stipend of 10,000 to 20,000 per month depending on the level of student and work. I as a M. Tech student used to get 12400 rs monthly stipend which is more than enough to spend joyable student life.

IIT Kanpur holds 3 Big festivals every year. They are Techkriti which is a technical fest, Antaragni which is a cultural festival and Udghosh which is a sports festival. Every year all this 3 festivals see more than 5000 outside students along with 10000 campus janta. Every year so many new celebrities of each and every industries comes to our college for performing.

I was a M. Tech student in IIT Kanpur. Our fees per semester was 20000 which includes 6000 tution fee and rest 14000 for hostel fee. Apart from this we have to pay mess bill every month which comes around 1800-2000 rs. I think this is feasible. There were also different relaxations for every caste.

As of M. Tech students every student get a monthly stipend of 12400 rs per month which makes M. Tech course easier to complete without any financial support. For other courses there were some scholarship option. There was also loan facilities which we can take. I have not availed of any of them so I don't know more about it.

Extracurricular activities in IIT's are beyond your dreams. You think about the sport and that will be there. I will only mention some of them. Water Pool, Squash, Inside court for badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis, cricket, football, Gym and so many of them. U can easily register for them and play it without any extra cost. Apart from this there were various clubs like music club, dance club, acting club, astronomy club, adventure club and much more. You can explore all the options you want to. And they are available at night also such that you don't have to mess with your academics. In fact the adventure club have 2 treckings every year during vacation time which many of students enjoy. There is so much which I cannot mention this time.

The hostel infrastructure at every IITs are very good for a growing children. They have all the facilities you will think about. For B. Tech hostels were sharing and for M. Tech single rooms are provided for every one. There were music room, TV room, Library, canteen, general store, Xerox store and 4 5 playground for volley ball, basket ball and badminton etc. There were no restrictions regarding time. Hostel gates are open 24*7 hours with security guard. Each room has one bed, one table, one chair, one almirah. The hostel has college wifi connection which we can use by our college login id.

There is good senior junior interaction in IIT Kanpur. For which they organize 10 days orientation program at start of session such that each new joinee can Get acquainted with different culture and can know his seniors and know everything beforehand. The whole orientation program is organised by seniors and they used to play and do stuffs with junior to create a more familiar situation for them before start of academics.

For pursuing M. Tech in any of the IIT's one have to clear GATE exam which is Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering and then based on your rank in the above exams you apply in different IIT's in different streams. Then based on your rank you will get calls from different IIT's. Then they have there separate exam and interview for respective streams. I got call from 5 IIT's and got selected in 3 of IIT's viz. Kharagpur, Roorkee and Kanpur for different streams. But I want to go for structural (Civil) engineer that's why I chose IIT Kanpur amongst above all options. The only filter criteria I used was that "What I want to Pursue?" and such that I opted for structural engineering in IIT Kanpur. Their test level was from moderate to tough. But their interview was hard to beat.

In IIT Kanpur, all faculties are atleast PhD from any foreign university. They are well known teachers in their respective departments with so many research papers published and so many research going on. They are always interested in something new and innovative to do and make academics easier for each and every student. They use many visual aids to give better explanation to students. They also don't simply believe on only teaching and thus they used to take quizzes and exams time to time such that each and every student is running parallel in academics with him. Apart from studies they are also their to support you mentally and emotionally.
