Is VSSUT a tier 1 university?
calling VSSUT a tier 1 is debatable but here's the honest take:
VSSUT (Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla) is Odisha's most prestigious technical institution — it's unambiguously tier-1 within Odisha. Nationally it sits in upper tier-2 (NIRF ranking ~100-200).
what it does well: affordable fees (~Rs.20-30k/year), strong PSU placement culture, good GATE prep environment, excellent for core engineering branches (Mech, Mining, Metallurgy). within Odisha industry circles the brand is very respected.
where it lags: IT/software placements are behind top NITs, national brand recognition isn't at par with IITs/top NITs, campus infrastructure is functional but not cutting-edge.
verdict: tier 1 in Odisha, tier 2 nationally. don't let the tier labeling confuse you — a CSE or ECE degree from VSSUT with a good CGPA opens solid doors, especially for GATE, PSUs, and core engineering roles. for software, you'll need to build skills independently. a very solid govt college option if you're from/in Odisha.

No, VSSUT is not a tier 1 university and neither are IITs and NITs. One needs to understand the fact that the Tier-1 and Tier-2 system is relevant in the US and not in India. It is a classification based on internationally competitive research outcomes of a university. Indian universities don’t come under this category yet. In India, tier-1 means a college with excellent placements. In reality, very few of our universities fare well when their research outcome is considered. Also, India does not have any specific body to provide ranking based on international competitive research outcomes. The NIRF ranks colleges generally.
One also needs to consider the fact that India is a developing country with limited resources. The budget for research is less compared to foreign universities.
It can thereby be concluded that VSSUT University is not a tier-1 university but it is one of the best institutions in Odisha.
