Should I go for B.Tech Energy Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

C
CommentCrusader Posted On : April 17th, 2026

I think if you're looking for a better financial return, B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering at IIT Kharagpur is a smarter choice. The tuition fees at IIT Delhi are relatively higher, with around 1.8 lakh per semester compared to Kharagpur's 1 lakh, and while both colleges have solid placement records, Kharagpur's recent highest package of 4 crore for international roles is really impressive. Plus, IIT Kharagpur provides a more extensive range of internship opportunities and campus placements start earlier, which could lead to better job prospects sooner. However, if you have a strong passion for energy and want to contribute to that field, IIT Delhi's Energy Engineering program offers unique value despite its higher cost. Ultimately, go for IIT Kharagpur if ROI is your priority; choose IIT Delhi if your heart lies in energy solutions.

Hello there! The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is the oldest IIT, established in 1950 but starting in 1951. Since then, the Department of Electrical Engineering has been actively engaged in teaching and research, equipped with modern laboratories and an excellent faculty. This is a core branch, and the department offers two undergraduate programs: electrical engineering and instrumentation engineering. Placement and job opportunities are outstanding! The career development center works hard to ensure that everyone gets placed. A large number of companies visit the campus for recruitment starting in December. All final year students can apply to companies in their respective fields. Generally, the packages and number of job opportunities in software development and data analytics are higher compared to core branches like electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering. For software roles, packages are around 15 LPA, while for core branches, it's about 8-10 LPA.

The companies that visited the campus during the placement season include:

  • BHEL
  • Ashok Leyland
  • HPCL
  • Mahindra & Mahindra
  • John Deere
  • L&T Construction

IIT Delhi's Electrical Engineering Department is top-notch. They have outstanding faculty. IITD also boasts interdisciplinary centers, offering more opportunities for collaboration. IIT Madras features excellent lab facilities and strong industrial ties. If you're focused on controls, IIT Bombay has a dedicated “Systems and Control” department. For heavy computational work, IISc provides the best resources, but for graduate studies, IITD's resources are more than adequate. Hope this helps!

I would lean towards B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in IIT Kharagpur over B.Tech Civil Engineering in IIT Delhi. While IIT Delhi has a strong faculty and a rigorous curriculum, IIT Kharagpur tends to have a broader range of opportunities in tech with placements from top companies like Google and Amazon, and the potential for higher salary packages. Campus life at IIT Kharagpur seems vibrant with significant extracurricular activities and events, giving a well-rounded experience. If you're more inclined towards technology and innovative fields, IIT Kharagpur is the way to go; however, if you're passionate about civil engineering and its applications, IIT Delhi is still a fantastic option.

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Industrial & Production Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Computer Science Engineering?

S
SurrealStarling Posted On : April 16th, 2026

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Industrial & Production Engineering offers a strong placement scene with an average package of 18 lakhs and over 90% placement rates, but it lacks scholarship options which could be a drawback for financially weaker students. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering has access to top companies like Google and Microsoft from the 3rd year, and it provides scholarships for deserving students, making it more financially viable in the long run.

While both colleges have excellent faculty and campus life, IIT Kharagpur seems to offer a better return on investment and aid for students in need, making it the smarter choice for those who value monetary support alongside placement opportunities. If you can handle the higher fees of IIT Delhi, it might be worth it for the placements, but for a balanced financial approach, IIT Kharagpur wins out.

All three options are excellent, and honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. However, your choice should depend on what you truly want.

IIT Delhi EE (Power and Automation)

  • 2nd best Entrepreneurship Culture in the country.
  • One of the tougher branches with strong placement options.
  • Offers the best non-core placement opportunities among the three.

IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech Mechanical Engineering

  • A solid choice with a well-rounded curriculum.
  • Mechanical Engineering has a broad scope and diverse career opportunities.

IIT Roorkee ECE

  • An established IIT with a well-respected branch.
  • Offers a conventional but reliable path in engineering.

Consider your interests and career goals carefully!

Should I go for B.Tech Chemical Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Information Technology in NSUT?

You don't seem to have a clear interest, which makes you just like countless others who take engineering exams every year. My first piece of advice is to figure out where you want to see yourself in the future. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Visualize what you want to become. Otherwise, you're like a blind person trying to swim in an ocean.

Once you have clarity, you'll know if you want a job, a shift to management or civil services, or if you're aiming for higher studies. Then, the subject becomes important. To understand what engineers in each field do, go online, check the syllabus of each department, pick a topic, and start reading or watching videos about it. Don't rely solely on placement statistics; those are influenced by personal effort.

I've seen students in various colleges struggling to grasp concepts in their CS classes, while others have successfully gained admission to prestigious Master's programs in Chemical Engineering at top universities. The same applies in reverse. A department can't be labeled as good or bad. It's up to you to study the field and advance in your career. If you choose IT just based on placements, you may find it hard to progress in life.

I believe you should lean towards CSE at IIIT Hyderabad! After four years, your branch will significantly impact your future career.

However, this is ultimately your decision.

So, consider the following:

  • Career Opportunities: CSE graduates often have a wider range of job options and higher starting salaries.
  • Industry Demand: The tech industry is booming, and skilled CSE professionals are in high demand.
  • Personal Interest: Think about what excites you more—engineering structures or coding and software development.

Choose what feels right for you!

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Electrical Engineering?

IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur both have strong reputations, but the financial aspects differ significantly. IIT Delhi has higher fees that can burden middle-class families, while IIT Kharagpur offers a more affordable option with decent scholarships available. In terms of ROI, IIT Kharagpur seems like a smarter choice as it provides a solid balance between quality education and lower costs, while IIT Delhi, despite its prestige, might not justify the fee hike for some students. For those prioritizing affordability and value for money, IIT Kharagpur would be the better pick, while those who value the Delhi location and are okay with higher fees might lean towards IIT Delhi.

Should I go for B.Tech Chemical Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in IIIT Hyderabad?

Career-wise, you should consider DTU/NSIT; there are plenty of opportunities there. However, if you want the IIT tag for pursuing an MBA or MS, that name carries weight.

IMPORTANT:
The reality today is that for a high-paying job, you need to be good at coding, and that's it. At IIT, you can sit for placements with any company, regardless of your branch, but that's not the case at DTU/NSIT.

In IIT, you get a better peer group compared to DTU. There are many OBC, SC, ST, and PWD students, and a significant portion of the college is reserved for these categories. Many students also have questionable certifications, so you can expect a varied peer group.

IIT Delhi is the number one college in India, and in many aspects, it's superior to DTU/NSIT.

If I were in your position, I would definitely choose IIT Delhi over DTU/NSIT.
