IISc Bangalore and Ministry of Jal Shakti to Establish International Centre of Excellence for Dams

New Delhi: IISc Bangalore has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Central Water Commission (CWC) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS). The MoA is part of the Indian government’s “Make In India” initiative to enhance the capabilities and expertise of national institutes. 

The MoJS will give IISc Bangalore a grant of INR 118.05 Crore to carry out the various projects under the MoA.The MoA includes the establishment of an International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED), which will receive support from the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) Phase II and III. 

The MoA will remain valid for the next ten years or until the completion of DRIP Phase-II and Phase-III. ICED will research ways to provide solutions for dam safety challenges and provide technical support to Indian and international dam owners.

MoA Successfully Signed Between IISc Bangalore and MoJS

The IISc Bangalore ICED is the second such institute to be set up in India. The fiest ICED was set up in IIT Roorkee. The IISc ICED will also offer area-specific courses, workshops, and training programs in dam safety and management on local, regional, national, and international levels. 

The main research of ICED will be concentrated on material testing for dams, advanced construction materials, advanced rehabilitation materials, and multi-hazard dam risk assessment.

The Secretary of the Department of Water Resources under MoJs, Ms Debashree Mukherjee, said about the project, “ICED will give the right impetus towards building an ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ and will also provide a window of opportunity for disseminating knowledge and expertise in the dam safety area to many underdeveloped and developing nations in future.”
