The PhD programme has a minimum duration of three years and a maximum limit of six years from the date of registration, giving students flexibility depending on their research progress.
To be eligible for admission, candidates must meet certain academic criteria. For the PhD in Law, an applicant should hold an LL.M. (after an LL.B. or B.A.LL.B.) with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade), or possess equivalent recognized qualifications. For those applying to the interdisciplinary stream, a master’s degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% aggregate is required. There is a relaxation of 5% for applicants from reserved categories.
The selection process is rigorous: first, there will be an All-India Written Test, which includes a research-aptitude component and a legal or interdisciplinary aptitude component, as relevant. Candidates who qualify either through the test or who are UGC-NET (Junior Research Fellowship) qualified will be shortlisted for Stage II, where they must submit a preliminary research proposal of around 1,500–2,000 words. This proposal will go through a plagiarism check, and if it meets the university’s standards, they will be invited for an interview.
Importantly, the last date to apply for the PhD programme is November 30, 2025, and the written test is scheduled for December 21, 2025, on the HNLU campus.
With this announcement, HNLU Raipur reaffirms its commitment to promoting quality research in law and interdisciplinary studies through a well-defined fee structure and a carefully planned admission process. The ₹ 3.4 lakh fee provides transparency and clarity for aspiring PhD candidates, helping them make informed decisions about their research career.
