New Delhi: In accordance with the Gujarat High Court's directives, Gujarat University has stayed the application process for its three-year LLB programme. Eight government-funded law colleges no longer receive recognition from the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The admissions process at these universities had been postponed by the HC until June 28, 2023. "Admission process of Three Years' LLB Programme is stayed as per order of the Hon'ble High Court of Gujarat," the Gujarat University stated.

According to the petition submitted by three law colleges and reported by Live Law, the BCI delisted them from the list of accredited law schools without doing any required inspections. The petitioners also claimed that the BCI requires inspection costs of Rs. 3 lakh and application fees of Rs. 50,000, making it difficult for grant-in-aid colleges to apply for one to two years.

However, according to the Live Law report, the universities frequently update the BCI with information regarding student enrollment and pay an annual web registration cost of INR 100 per student. Three grant-in-aid colleges connected to Gujarat University, LA Shah Law College, IM Nanavati Law College, and MN Nanavati Law College, lodged the appeal.

“It (MN Nanavati Law College) also asked for instructions against Gujarat University to clarify the admission status of students who would be allotted seats under the Centralised Admission Process in light of the BC's permission of Gujarat University,” the report continued.
