Dr. Sunil Khatal is the Head of Computer Department at Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering, Pune. He has completed his PhD in Computer Engineering from JJTU, Rajasthan and an M.E. from Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering with distinction. 

Dr. Sunil Khatal has nine years of work experience in the field of education and has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Department at Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering in 2014. Dr. Sunil Khatal is the receipent of the Best Researcher Award by National Faculty Award 2021-2022 Novel Research Academy, Pondicherry, India and Best Paper Award in International Conference and Innovations and Research in Science and Technology, 2021. Besides this, Dr. Sunil Khatal has also published a book on Software Testing and Quality Assurance for SSPU 19 course.

Can you provide a brief overview of your background and experience in the field of Computer Engineering that led you to become the Head of the Computer Department?

Qualifications play a significant part in the development of a career. My knowledge and a fundamental understanding of computer subjects have helped me in becoming the Head of the Computer Engineering Department. In addition, a skill that specialises in something else, such as coding or testing, plays an important part in the whole process. Work, whether it be smart work or hard work, combined with dedication, led to my promotion to Head of the Department from Assistant Professor.

The study of computer programming and computing is covered in the field of Computer Engineering. Earning a degree in computer engineering from Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering will equip students with the fundamental skills necessary to embark on a professional path in the field of coding or computer programming. You will come away with a solid comprehension of the theoretical underpinnings of the processes that are involved in the production of computer programmes and applications.

What is your vision for the Department of Computer Engineering, and how do you plan to lead the department to achieve that vision?

We want to develop into a preeminent institution that offers students the best possible education and research opportunities in the field of Computer Engineering. We also want to serve the needs of the community and the market, by providing outstanding education and research opportunities, training programmes, extensive interaction with the market, and the highest quality research in the field of computer engineering. 

What are objectives of Computer Engineering Department from your college?

We believe in the individual worth of every person and work towards the establishment of an environment that is both physically and socially supportive. The mission that we have set for ourselves is to commit ourselves to achieve fantastic results in the training, analysis, and application of current technological innovation in the field of computer engineering. While the Computer Engineering department will place a strong emphasis on the development of fundamental principles, it will also work to increase students' exposure to real-world industrial applications through the development of appropriate facilities.

How do you foster an environment of innovation and creativity among Computer Engineering students and encourage them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical applications?

Students who take admission to the Computer Engineering department at Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering have innovative ideas while they were still in college. They receive comprehensive guidance in every form, including the distribution of various publications. At Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering, the projects get underway while the students are still attending college. What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

At SPCE, we face a few challenges like organizing student learning opportunities and managing student learning progressions. Sometimes it is difficult for students to work in a team when they don’t know the other person. Additionally, computer engineering involves new technologies that makes few students flexible to adapt to new technologies. 

How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

As head of the department, one of my goals is to make academic ideas more tangible by providing students with opportunities for visual and hands-on learning. I encourage student participation in activities that take place outside of the classroom, such as field trips and experiments. It is also my responsibility to ensure that all faculty members participate in a variety of professional development programmes that will improve both their teaching and their students' learning. Since educational policies are in a state of constant flux, it is essential to participate in various events and draw motivation from the work of other educators and academic technocrats.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program and what benefits did they get after pursuing this course?

Our department at SPCE, provides students with various types of projects like AI, Deep learning, Machine learning, IOT, Block Chain Technology, etc. where they learn about latest technology in the field of computers. Students can get placed in good companies and work in positions like Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Database Administrator. We help them to give practical knowledge by giving them real life situations such that it becomes easier for them to later understand more about their work when they enter corporate.

Can you share success stories of your department's alumni and how they have made a significant impact in the field of Computer Engineering?

At the Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering, graduates such as Banakar Nikita and Ambre Rushikesh are just two examples of people who have achieved success after studying computer engineering. Other alumni have also achieved success because of their own hard work and the efforts shown by our teaching staff. Our teachers play an important role in shaping students' minds in the same way that a porter gives shape to pots, and it is important not to forget the support of non-teaching staff as well.

How do you address the job placement and career guidance needs of Computer Engineering students, especially considering the evolving demands of the job market?

Students need to cover a wide range of topics concerning computer programmes and hardware frameworks to be job eligible. In addition they must keep up to date with the recent developments in technological fields. Keep learning and increasing your knowledge. Attend your college’s seminars, guest lectures and workshops as it will bring you up to speed on the most recent technological advances.
