Dr. Sayed Zafar is the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Nagpur Institute of Technology. The ex-principal of Anjuman Polytechnic Nagpur, Dr. Zafar, holds a B.E. in Civil Engineering, M.Tech in Hydraulic Engineering and a PhD in Civil Engineering from MIET. He has over six papers published in international and national journals and has published a patent. Not only is he the Chief Officer in charge of the Regional Assessment Center but is also an Elected Academic Coordinator of the un-aided Polytechnic Union of Vidharba.

You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
Throughout my professional career, I have been connected with the education sector due to several key factors. Firstly, I am passionate about fostering knowledge and empowering individuals through education. Witnessing the growth and development of students brings me immense satisfaction. Secondly, the education sector is ever-evolving, presenting constant opportunities for learning and personal growth. Additionally, being able to contribute to shaping future generations and preparing them for success in their careers is a great privilege and responsibility.
Being the HOD (Civil Engineering) of Nagpur Institute of Technology what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
As the HOD of Civil Engineering at Nagpur Institute of Technology, my philosophy of leadership revolves around fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. I believe in empowering my team members, encouraging their ideas and creativity, and providing them with the necessary resources and support to excel. My leadership style can be described as democratic, where I value open communication, respect diverse perspectives, and strive to make informed decisions through consensus-building.
The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute?
The education systems in India and other foreign countries may have structural differences, but studying at Nagpur Institute of Technology can offer several benefits to inbound students. What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the Institute and the students are?
As a faculty member and HOD at Nagpur Institute of Technology, my roles and responsibilities to the institute and students are multifaceted. I am responsible for designing and delivering quality curricula and ensuring effective teaching and learning processes. Moreover, I provide guidance and mentorship to students, helping them develop their skills and knowledge. Additionally, I contribute to research and innovation, fostering a culture of intellectual growth. Lastly, I actively participate in the overall development of the institute, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to create a conducive learning environment.
What do you think should be the Institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?
In the next ten years, I believe the top priority for Nagpur Institute of Technology should be to further enhance industry-academia collaborations. Strengthening partnerships with industry leaders will ensure that our curriculum remains relevant and aligned with industry needs. This can be achieved through increased internships, research collaborations, and industry-sponsored projects. By nurturing strong connections with the industry, we can enhance our students' employability and provide them with valuable exposure to real-world scenarios.
What would you like people to know about your Institute they may not know?
One thing I would like people to know about Nagpur Institute of Technology is our strong focus on holistic development. While we excel at providing quality technical education, we also emphasise the importance of extracurricular activities, sports, and cultural events. Our institute offers a wide range of clubs, societies, and platforms for students to explore their interests and talents beyond the classroom. This holistic approach helps nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only academically competent but also possess essential life skills.
