Mr. Vinu Sebastian M. is the Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MES College of Engineering and Technology. He holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.E. in Thermal Engineering. Previously, he worked at Star Lion College of Engineering and Technology and he has work experience of over 13 years. Mr. Vinu has published a paper on the design, fabrication and performance study of frusto conical solar collector by using nano fluids. Moreover, he has conducted four faculty development programs on teaching and skills development as well.

What valuable advice would you like to give the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

Stay focused on the new trends and keep updating yourself. I would like to advise my students to be up-to-date with the latest technologies. Continue to improve your skills and look for new opportunities for your future. You must maintain a balance between your personal and professional life.


How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

FDPs and orientation programmes are essential to enhance the skills of the faculty. Experts are invited to give advice, suggest topics, and conduct interactive sessions for mentors. They can learn about the latest trends and technologies in the industry. The faculty also collaborates with industry experts through various MoUs signed by MESCET.


How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program?

We conduct technical talks by inviting industrial experts to share their experiences and expectations with us, and our students also get a chance to interact with them. We have also signed MOUs with our industry experts to train our students. Based on these MOUs our students complete internships and get hired for full-time positions as well.


What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

We conduct various events for scholars and provide assignments, seminars, and conferences. Our campus regularly organizes numerous events for students. Experiential learning is provided to the students through mini projects and assignments. Staff regularly interact with them to monitor their performance and provide academic guidance. This builds confidence in the students to achieve success. We are also encouraging students to register for MOOC like those provided by NPTEL and online courses.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

The latest programmes that we offer in the department are add-on courses on Arduino and IOT, engine assembly and disassembly, NEBOSH, and HVAC learning for students. These equip the students to expand their horizons to newer and better levels. Also, these teach the students to be market ready. Our campus provides industry visits for students. They can learn about the industry and acquire some experience.


What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

A mechanical engineering professional will have abundant opportunities in many industries. As a result of rapid industrialization, mechanical engineers are in high demand around the world. Job prospects for skilled mechanical engineers are limitless in India and other countries. Students who have successfully completed the course will be actively recruited by private and public sectors in various industries.


When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

My vision, when I first joined the institutes, was to prepare students for productive careers and prepare them for future prospects. I try to make them understand the basics by giving them real-life examples. Apart from that, my objective is also to support my fellow colleagues in achieving the same.


What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?

One of the most prominent fields of Engineering is mechanical engineering, and it has a huge scope. The mechanical engineering degree at MESCET has the potential to train students to cater to the needs of society and industry. It also allows the students to become good engineers. Ideally, this is achieved by clubbing the curriculum with mini projects, innovative cells, industry visits, and internships.
