Class 8 Science Chapter 17 Stars and The Solar System: Important Topics

Our planetary system is the only one officially called the “solar system,” but astronomers have discovered more than 3,200 other stars with planets orbiting them in our galaxy. Our solar system is just one specific planetary system a star with planets orbiting around it.

  • The Moon

The Moon is called Earth's only natural satellite. It is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System, at about one-quarter the diameter of Earth, and is the largest satellite in the Solar System relative to its major planet, and larger than any known dwarf planet.

  • The Stars

Stars are any massive self-luminous celestial body of gas that shines by radiation derived from its internal energy sources. We can see only a very small percentage with our naked eye of the tens of billions of trillions of stars composing the observable universe.

  • The Solar System

The Solar System is referred to as the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it. The Solar System formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar molecular cloud.
