MAT 2026 Preparation Tips: Section-Wise Strategy
You have 2–4 months before the September or December 2026 MAT sessions. Use these section-wise tips to build a structured study plan.
Language Comprehension
- Read editorials from The Hindu, The Economic Times, or Mint for 30 minutes every day. This builds reading speed and vocabulary together.
- Do not spend more than 12–15 minutes on RC passages in the exam. Time pressure is the biggest challenge in this section.
- Practise para-jumbles daily. They require identifying connectors and logical flow — not grammar knowledge alone.
- Build a vocabulary list of 10 words every day using Norman Lewis. Synonyms and antonyms from that list cover most MAT vocab questions.
Mathematical Skills
- Arithmetic is your highest-return area in this section. Mastering Percentages, Profit-Loss, Time-Speed-Distance, and Time-Work covers over 50% of the section’s questions.
- Learn shortcut formulas for Compound Interest, Ratio-Proportion, and Averages. Speed matters — you have 120 minutes across all five sections.
- Practise at least 20 Maths questions daily with a timer. Target 60–70 seconds per question to maintain exam pace.
- Revise basic Geometry theorems from Class 10 NCERT. MAT geometry does not go beyond Class 10 level.
- For Permutation-Combination and Probability, focus on selection problems. Complex combinatorics rarely appears in MAT.
Data Analysis and Sufficiency
- Practise reading DI graphs quickly. Spend no more than 60–90 seconds understanding any graph before solving the question set.
- For Data Sufficiency, stop as soon as you know whether one or both statements are sufficient. Never solve the full problem — this saves 30–45 seconds per question.
- Practise Caselet DI regularly. Paragraph-based DI has been increasing in frequency across recent MAT sessions.
- Work on calculation speed: learn percentage-to-fraction shortcuts and memorise squares up to 25 and cubes up to 15.
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
- Practise at least two full seating arrangement puzzles every day. Arrangement and Blood Relation puzzles are the most consistent types in MAT reasoning.
- For syllogisms, use the Venn Diagram method consistently. It removes errors on "both/neither" type conclusions.
- Critical Reasoning questions reward students who spot the argument gap (premise → conclusion → gap). Identify the gap before reading the answer choices.
- Coding-Decoding and Series questions are fast scorers. Never skip them — they rarely take more than 45 seconds each.
Indian and Global Environment
- Follow a daily current affairs app or monthly digest. MAT GK heavily tests events from the six months before each session’s exam date.
- Focus on Business and Economy GK: RBI rate decisions, Union Budget highlights, government schemes, and major corporate news.
- Allocate only 10–12 minutes to this section in the exam. It does not count toward the composite score. Redirect saved time to weaker sections.
