MAT 2027: Detailed Exam Pattern

MAT 2027 has five sections, each with 30 questions worth 1 mark each. The exam has no per-section time limit — you decide how to distribute your 120 minutes across sections. Only four of the five sections count toward the composite score; the Economic & Business Environment section is excluded from the 199–801 composite scale colleges use for admissions.

The Economic & Business Environment section carries 30 questions but is excluded from the MAT composite score — focus the bulk of your preparation on the other four sections.

MAT Marking Scheme 2027

MAT 2027 uses a uniform marking scheme across all five sections: +1 mark for every correct answer and a deduction of 0.25 mark for every wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. The raw score is then scaled to a composite of 199–801, with Economic & Business Environment excluded from the conversion.

Negative marking of 0.25 mark applies to all MCQs in MAT 2027 — avoid random guessing, especially in sections where you are less than 50% confident.

The composite score colleges receive is not your raw score out of 150. AIMA scales your performance in the four composite-counted sections to the 199–801 range. Most mid-tier institutes accept a composite score of 500 and above; top-ranked B-schools typically require 700 or higher.

MAT Subject-Wise Exam Pattern 2027

Each of the five MAT 2027 sections tests a distinct skill set. All five carry equal raw marks (30 each), but only four count toward your composite score. Use the section-wise breakdown below to plan your study schedule.

1. Language Comprehension

This section tests verbal ability, reading comprehension, and grammar. RC passages typically account for roughly a third of the section’s questions, making reading speed a key factor in this part of the exam.

2. Intelligence & Critical Reasoning

This section covers logical reasoning, analytical ability, and critical thinking. It is one of the higher-scoring sections for well-prepared students, since most question types follow recognisable patterns that improve with practice.

3. Data Analysis & Sufficiency

This section tests your ability to read and interpret data from charts, tables, and graphs, and to judge whether given information is sufficient to answer a question. It is the most calculation-intensive section and typically demands the most time.

4. Mathematical Skills

This section covers quantitative aptitude at an undergraduate level. Arithmetic and algebra together account for the majority of questions, making them the highest-return topics for focused revision.

5. Economic & Business Environment

This section covers general awareness of business, economics, and current affairs. Its score does not count toward the composite score that colleges use for shortlisting. Dedicate limited preparation time here unless a specific target college requires a minimum score in this section.

MAT Question Types 2027

MAT 2027 uses only MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) format across all five sections. Each question offers four answer options; you must select the single correct one. Unlike several other management entrance exams, MAT has no numerical/integer-type, multi-select, or assertion-reason questions.

The interface experience varies by mode:

• In CBT mode: you answer on-screen using the testing interface; you can freely navigate between sections and mark questions for later review within the 120-minute window.
• In IBT mode: similar to CBT but taken from home or a cyber café; a stable internet connection and a webcam are typically required for remote proctoring.
• In PBT mode: you fill answers on an OMR sheet using a black or blue ballpoint pen; marking more than one option for a question invalidates that answer — follow the OMR instructions carefully to avoid rejected responses.

MAT Exam Pattern: Changes in 2027 vs Previous Year

No official changes to the MAT exam pattern have been announced by AIMA for the 2027 cycle as of October 2026. The exam is expected to continue with the MAT 2.0 format that has been in place since May 2024. The last significant revision was that 2024 introduction, which reduced total questions from 200 to 150 and duration from 150 to 120 minutes. How to Prepare Based on MAT Exam Pattern

The MAT 2027 pattern provides clear preparation signals. Equal question counts across sections, a shared 120-minute window, and one section excluded from the composite score all point to a focused strategy. Use the structural facts below as your preparation roadmap.

1. Prioritise the four composite-score sections. Language Comprehension, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills directly determine your scaled score. Give these four the bulk of your study time.
2. Set a per-section time budget in practice tests. With 120 minutes for 150 questions, you have roughly 48 seconds per question. In mock tests, target 24–26 minutes per composite section and leave 8–10 minutes for Economic & Business Environment.
3. Apply selective attempting to control negative marking. The –0.25 penalty means four wrong answers cancel out one correct one. Skip any question where you cannot eliminate at least two of the four options — a zero for an unattempted question beats a deduction.
4. Treat Economic & Business Environment as low-priority revision. Since it does not affect your composite, a 15-minute daily read of business and economics news in the weeks before the exam is enough preparation. Deep study of this section has the lowest return on your admission score.
5. Build calculation speed for Data Analysis & Sufficiency. This section has the most time-intensive questions. Practice approximation techniques and DI shortcuts — solving sets under an 8-minute timer in practice sessions builds the speed you need on exam day.
6. Practice mode-specific strategies if using PBT. In PBT mode, you cannot freely change an OMR entry without careful erasure, and a multi-bubble response is automatically rejected. Run at least four timed practice tests on a printed OMR-style answer sheet if you plan to take the paper-based session.
7. Use multiple sessions to improve your best composite score. AIMA allows you to register for all four MAT sessions in 2027. Appearing in two or more sessions gives you a second chance at a higher composite, since most colleges accept your best result from any session across the year.
