What is MAT 2026?

MAT stands for Management Aptitude Test. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted by AIMA — All India Management Association — for admission to MBA and PGDM programmes offered by over 600 B-schools across India. AIMA has been conducting MAT since 1988, making it one of the oldest and most widely accepted MBA entrance exams in the country.

The Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD), Government of India, approved MAT as a national-level standardised test in 2003. This recognition makes MAT scores valid for admissions across all AICTE-approved and university-affiliated B-schools that participate in the programme.

Key highlights of MAT 2026:

  • MAT is held four times a year — in February, May, September, and December sessions
  • The exam is available in two modes: PBT (Paper-Based Test) and CBT (Computer-Based Test). The IBT (Internet-Based Test) mode has been discontinued from 2026.
  • The exam has 5 sections with 40 questions each, totalling 200 questions in 150 minutes
  • The composite score is calculated from 4 of the 5 sections and ranges from 200 to 800
  • MAT scores are valid for 1 year from the date of result declaration
  • More than 600 B-schools across India accept MAT scores for MBA and PGDM admissions
  • There is no centralized counselling — each institution runs its own GD, PI, and WAT process after shortlisting candidates on MAT scores
  • IIMs and top schools like XLRI, FMS Delhi, and MDI Gurgaon do not accept MAT. They require CAT or other specific entrance exams.

MAT 2026 Marking Scheme

  • Correct answer: +1 mark
  • Wrong answer: –0.25 marks (negative marking applies)
  • Unattempted question: 0 marks
  • Total possible marks: 200 (if all 200 questions answered correctly)

MAT 2026 Composite Score — How It Works

The MAT composite score is calculated from 4 sections only. The Indian and Global Environment section does NOT contribute to the composite score. The four sections used are Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills.

Each of the 4 contributing sections is given equal weightage. AIMA scales and normalises the scores to account for difficulty variations across sessions and exam modes (PBT vs CBT). The final composite score falls on a scale of 200 to 800.

Even though the Indian and Global Environment section does not count in the composite score, several B-schools review this section score separately. Do not leave it entirely blank.

PBT vs CBT — Key Differences

  • PBT (Paper-Based Test): Pen-and-paper format with OMR answer sheets. Held at physical exam centres on a single fixed date per session.
  • CBT (Computer-Based Test): Computer-based format at designated test centres. Same content and difficulty level as PBT. Held a couple of weeks after the PBT in the same session.
  • Both modes have equal validity for college admissions. B-schools do not distinguish between PBT and CBT candidates.
  • The IBT (Internet-Based Test / home-based mode) was discontinued from 2026 and is no longer offered by AIMA.

MAT 2026 Syllabus

AIMA does not publish a fixed prescribed syllabus for MAT, but the exam follows a consistent pattern across sessions. Based on previous years’ papers, here is the section-wise syllabus for MAT 2026.

Language Comprehension

  • Reading Comprehension (RC): 3–4 passages on topics like business, current affairs, science, culture, history, and literature. Questions test inference, main idea identification, tone and attitude, and vocabulary in context.
  • Verbal Ability: Para-jumbles (jumbled paragraphs), sentence correction and error identification, fill in the blanks (grammar-based and vocabulary-based), antonyms and synonyms, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning

  • Seating arrangements — linear, circular, and matrix-based
  • Blood relations and family tree problems
  • Clocks, calendars, and direction sense
  • Coding and decoding, number and letter series
  • Input-output problems, syllogisms, binary logic
  • Critical reasoning — statement-conclusion, statement-assumption, fact vs inference vs judgment
  • Team formation puzzles and decision making

Data Analysis and Sufficiency

  • Data Interpretation (DI): Bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, tables, caselets, and combination charts. Typically 4–5 DI sets with 5–8 questions each.
  • Data Sufficiency: Two-statement data sufficiency questions; 8–10 standalone questions asking whether the given data is sufficient to answer a question

Mathematical Skills

  • Arithmetic (40–50% of section): Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, speed-time-distance, time and work, averages, ratio and proportion, number systems, mixtures and alligations
  • Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions
  • Geometry and Mensuration: Triangles, circles, polygons, areas and volumes, coordinate geometry
  • Modern Mathematics: Permutations and combinations, probability, arithmetic and geometric progressions, set theory

Indian and Global Environment (GK / Current Affairs)

  • Current Affairs: Economy and business news, major corporate events, awards and recognitions, sports, science and technology, national and international events (last 6–12 months)
  • Static General Knowledge: Indian economy basics, Indian Constitution, global trade institutions (WTO, IMF, World Bank), books and authors, important records, geography fundamentals

For the General Knowledge section, read The Hindu or Business Standard daily. You can also use the Manorama Yearbook and monthly current affairs capsules for comprehensive coverage of both static and dynamic GK.

MAT 2026 Score and Percentile

MAT reports six scores on the scorecard — individual section scores for all 5 sections plus one composite score. The composite score is the most important figure for MBA admissions, as most B-schools use it as the primary shortlisting criterion.

Understanding the MAT Composite Score

  • The composite score ranges from 200 to 800
  • It is derived from 4 of the 5 sections — Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills
  • The Indian and Global Environment section score appears on the scorecard separately but is excluded from the composite
  • Each of the 4 contributing sections is given equal weightage
  • AIMA applies normalisation to adjust scores for difficulty differences across sessions and modes, so scores from different sessions are fairly comparable
  • The composite score is valid for 1 year from the date of result

MAT 2026 Composite Score vs Percentile — Indicative Mapping

MAT Composite Score Approximate Percentile
750–800 95–99 percentile
700–750 90–95 percentile
650–700 85–90 percentile
600–650 80–85 percentile
550–600 70–80 percentile
500–550 60–70 percentile
Below 500 Below 60 percentile

This is an indicative mapping based on historical trends. AIMA does not publish an official score-to-percentile table. Actual percentiles may vary by session depending on the number of candidates and difficulty level.

You can download your scorecard from the AIMA candidate dashboard after the result is declared. There is no physical scorecard sent by post. AIMA electronically shares scores with all the institutions you selected during registration.

MAT 2026 Cutoff

There is no single common cutoff for MAT. Each B-school sets its own cutoff independently based on its intake, the number of applicants, and its admission criteria. Cutoffs are generally expressed as a percentile or a composite score. The table below shows indicative cutoffs for popular MAT-accepting colleges based on previous years’ trends.

MAT 2026 Cutoff for Top Colleges (Indicative)

MAT 2026 Admission Process

AIMA does not conduct any centralised counselling or seat allotment for MAT. Once your result is declared, each B-school that has your score will run its own independent admission process. Here is how the typical post-MAT admission process works across most participating colleges.

Step-by-Step Post-MAT Admission Process

  1. Download your MAT scorecard from the AIMA candidate dashboard after the result is declared
  2. Apply to colleges individually: AIMA sends scores to institutions you chose during registration. Many colleges also have their own online application portals — check each college’s website and apply directly to confirm your interest
  3. Wait for shortlisting announcement: Each B-school will publish its shortlist of candidates called for the selection process. Shortlisting criteria typically include MAT composite score or percentile, plus academic records
  4. Attend GD/PI/WAT rounds: Shortlisted candidates are called for Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and sometimes a Written Ability Test (WAT) at the college campus. Dates and formats vary by institute.
  5. Receive merit list and offer letter: Final selection is based on a composite of MAT score + academic performance (10th, 12th, graduation marks) + GD/PI/WAT performance + work experience (if applicable)
  6. Confirm your seat: Pay the admission fee by the deadline mentioned in your offer letter and submit all required documents to secure your seat

Since the admission process is decentralised, the timeline for each college’s GD/PI rounds and offer letters will differ. After your MAT May 2026 result is declared (last week of June), track each college’s schedule independently.

Your MAT score is valid for 1 year from the date of result declaration. A score earned in the May 2026 session can be used for admissions throughout the 2026–27 academic year.

MAT 2026 Preparation Tips

If you are preparing for the upcoming MAT September or December 2026 session, here is a practical preparation guide based on the exam pattern and the experience of past test-takers.

Study Plan Based on Time Available

  • 3 months or more: Spend the first month building concepts in Mathematical Skills and Language Comprehension. Use the second month for section-wise intensive practice. In the third month, shift entirely to full-length mock tests — aim for 15–20 complete mocks before the exam.
  • 1–2 months: Skip long concept-building phases. Take 2–3 diagnostic full tests first to identify your weakest sections. Spend 60% of your remaining time fixing those weak areas and 40% on maintaining your stronger sections.

Section-Wise Preparation Tips

  • Language Comprehension: Read The Hindu or Business Standard daily to build reading speed and vocabulary. Practice RC passages under timed conditions — aim to read and answer one full passage in 6–8 minutes. Use Wren and Martin for grammar rules.
  • Mathematical Skills: Build your arithmetic fundamentals first — percentages, profit and loss, interest, speed-time-distance, and time and work make up about 40–50% of this section. Learn Vedic math shortcuts to speed up calculations.
  • Data Analysis and Sufficiency: Practice reading charts and tables quickly. For DI sets, scan all questions in a set before you start calculating, and pick the easiest ones first. Focus on approximation — exact calculations waste time.
  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning: For seating arrangements and puzzle questions, always draw a grid or diagram. For critical reasoning, base every answer strictly on the information given — no outside assumptions.
  • Indian and Global Environment: Read one newspaper daily and note important appointments, awards, economic data, and events. Use monthly GK digests for static GK. Spend 15–20 minutes on this section every day.

Carry two printed copies to the exam hall — soft copy on mobile is not accepted. The CBT admit card will be available from June 11, 2026.

Ques. What is the MAT 2026 application fee?

Ans. The MAT 2026 fee for the May session is Rs. 2,300 for a single mode (PBT only or CBT only) and Rs. 4,000 for both PBT and CBT. Each additional institution choice beyond the free quota costs Rs. 118. Fees are paid online and are non-refundable. CBT registration for the May session is currently open until June 8, 2026.

Ques. What is the eligibility criteria for MAT 2026?

Ans. You need a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in any discipline — arts, science, commerce, engineering, or any other field. There is no minimum percentage requirement and no age limit. Final year graduation students can apply provisionally. Professional qualifications like CA, CS, or ICWA are also accepted.

Ques. How is the MAT composite score calculated?

Ans. The MAT composite score is based on 4 sections: Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills. The 5th section, Indian and Global Environment, does not contribute to the composite score. The composite score is scaled from 200 to 800, with equal weightage to all 4 contributing sections. AIMA applies normalisation to adjust for difficulty variations across sessions.

Ques. Do IIMs accept MAT scores?

Ans. No. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) do not accept MAT scores. IIMs require CAT (Common Admission Test) for admission. Similarly, XLRI, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, and SPJIMR do not accept MAT. MAT scores are accepted by 600+ mid-tier and private B-schools. If your target is an IIM or a top-ranked institute, you need to appear for CAT.

Ques. What is a good score in MAT 2026?

Ans. A MAT composite score of 600 and above (approximately 80 percentile) is generally considered a good score for admission to several reputed MAT-accepting colleges. For institutes like Amity Business School and BIMTECH, you need 80–90 percentile or higher. A composite score of 700+ (approximately 90 percentile) puts you in a strong position for the top MAT-accepting colleges.

Ques. How many times is MAT conducted in 2026?

Ans. MAT is conducted four times in 2026 — in the February, May, September, and December sessions. Each session has both a PBT and CBT mode. The February session is already done. The May session PBT is on May 31. The September and December sessions are expected later in the year. You can appear in multiple sessions and use your best score for admissions.

Ques. Is there negative marking in MAT 2026?

Ans. Yes, MAT has negative marking. You get +1 mark for a correct answer and lose 0.25 marks (one-fourth) for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. Avoid guessing randomly — only mark an answer when you can confidently rule out at least two options.

Ques. How long is the MAT score valid?

Ans. MAT scores are valid for 1 year from the result declaration date. So if you score in the May 2026 session (result expected last week of June 2026), your score will be valid until approximately June 2027. You can use it to apply to any MAT-accepting college within that period. You can also appear in a later session to improve your score if needed.

Ques. Is the IBT mode available for MAT 2026?

Ans. No. AIMA has discontinued the IBT (Internet-Based Test) mode from 2026. The IBT was a home-based online test introduced during the COVID-19 period. From 2026, MAT is available only in two modes: PBT (Paper-Based Test at designated exam centres) and CBT (Computer-Based Test at computer centres). Both modes carry equal validity for college admissions.

Ques. When will MAT September 2026 registration open?

Ans. AIMA has not yet announced the MAT September 2026 session dates. Based on previous years’ patterns, registration for the September session typically opens in July or August 2026. AIMA usually announces the schedule 6–8 weeks before the exam date. Watch the official website mat.aima.in for the official notification.
