Bachelor of Science in Social Science is an undergraduate degree program which spans for three years and focuses on the study of social science concerning the society and human behavior. The basic eligibiity to take admission in this course is 10+2 pass. Average tuition fee for this course in all the colleges offering this course ranges between 50000 to 2 lakhs.

This course deals with a lot many aspects concerning the environment, social work, gender analysis, society and culture and aspects related to the socio-political and economic aspects of a country. It is an amalgamation of various fields of study and thus makes the course very wide in its scope and interdisciplinary. The major aim of the course is provide an in-depth understanding among the students about the social and cultural aspects of a society and encourage them to contribute to it.

The major career options after successful completion of the course include social work, working in the NGOs, working for the rural health and growth development and also as content developers for newspapers and websites to take the issue of societal development to as many people as possible. Average entry level salary after completing this course may range between 2 to 4 lakhs.

What is the course about?

The course is about the understanding of the issues and areas which affect and influence the people and the society to work in a particular manner and also be able to analyse them and modify them if required. This whole process of observation, analysis and modification is what the course aims at imparting knowledge about, to the students.

The major disciplines and areas of study that come under this course include anthropology majorly, economics, environmental planning, geography, human ecology and human development along with political science and public health.

In order to be able to understand the workings of a society, one also has to understand the psychology and sociology of the people of the community or society. This course deals with all these aspects perfectly making it an umbrella course that encompasses many different fields of study.

Any student who wishes to study about the intricacies of the society that one lives in and all the related aspects of economics, politics, social concerns on both individual and a collective level, should pursue this course. The course is ideal for a person who wishes to have a career in the social sciences field and work for the betterment of the society by choosing careers like a social worker or a social scientist and the like.

One of the major prerequisites for this course is that the person must have a good command over soft skills in order to interact effectively and easily during and after the course. The person must also be aware of the challenges that one faces during a career in social sciences. The course is best if a person wants to read and study about many disciplines under one course.

Admission

In this 3 year bachelor’s degree there are 60 seats. Students must apply with the score of the entrance exam conducted by TISS which is a 100 mark test and based on those scores only students are granted admission however, 66% seats are reserved for north eastern students. The admission process is carried out in the month of March and student can apply online. Placement Experience

In a country like India where it is known for its secularism and its different cultural diversities, the course trains a student to be sensitive towards cultural similarities and understand different positions to commit to social responsibility. TISS offers working practically with filed assignments and NGOs which gives students a chance to put their knowledge to practical use. After completion student can work in NGO or goverment based institutes dedicated for such social work.
