Q: I am selected in IISER Mohali this year. Now I want to apply for INSPIRE scholarship which requires an endorsement certificate signed by the head of the institute. How can I get that?

IISER Mohali offers INSPIRE scholarship to students of BSc, BSC (Hons), Int. MSc, or BS courses for some particular subjects. In IISER, you will not have to arrange for an endorsement certificate. The administration will take care of all the formalities. The academic office will assist you through the entire process.

Q: What are your experiences of IISER Int. PhD interview and exams? What are some sample questions given in the entrance test or interviews? What is the pattern of the entrance test at IISER Mohali?

One of my friends took the entrance test for integrated Ph.D. program in Physics at IISER Mohali. His experience throughout the entire process is discussed below in brief. The selection process includes a written test followed by an interview. The written test takes around 60-90 mins. Students who clear the test are shortlisted for the interview. The question asked in the test are objective type. The difficulty level is moderate. If you have a thorough understanding of your undergraduate subjects, you can easily solve the paper in time. You will need to wait for a couple of hours for the result to be displayed. The interview will last for about 20-40 mins. The interview panel usually consists of four faculty members. They usually ask basic questions to test your fundamental knowledge of the subject. If you don’t know the answer to a particular question, it is better if you say it clearly, rather than guessing.

Q: How is life at IISER Mohali moving?

Life at IISER Mohali is quite good. It will teach you how to manage life. You will get to meet many people that you will become good friends with. Memories of your life on campus will stay with you forever. Other than great academics, the institute will teach you how to take care of things on your own.

Q: What is it like to study at IISER Mohali?

Life at IISER Mohali is busy and unpredictable. It will feel like one moment you are attending your first lecture and the next moment you are getting ready for your midterm. The campus is vibrant. The student crowd is talented and competitive. You will get to learn a lot from them. The labs are the best part. You will get to work individually as budding researchers. Despite the difficult academics and hectic schedule, you will learn to enjoy your stay at the campus.

Q: Why does IISER Mohali have the worst campus as compared to Pune or Kolkata?

IISER Mohali isn’t the worst campus as compared to IISER Kolkata or IISER Pune. The campus is clean and well-maintained. The brick line architecture looks great all the time. The Mohali campus is a biodiversity hotspot. There are 119 different species of birds including peacocks. There is a fenced area which is known as the Ecopark. It is an untouched ecosystem and is entirely wild.

Q: How many marks are required in the IISER aptitude test to get into IISER Pune or IISER Mohali?

One of my friends secured 105 marks in the IISER aptitude test a few years back. He got IISER Bhopal in the first round and IISER Kolkata in the second round. IISER Kolkata was his first preference. You should expect to get IISER Kolkata with a score of above 100. However, the cutoff differs each year, depending on various factors.

Q: I attempted 31 questions in the IISER aptitude test. Can I get IISER Pune or Mohali?

It is quite unlikely that you will get IISER Pune or Mohali. Even if you got all the answers correct, it’s only half of the total marks. According to the cutoff trends of recent years, it won’t be enough. You may have a chance of getting admission if you are from some reserved category.

Q: Which should I select: IISER Pune or IISER Mohali?

Both IISER Pune and IISER Mohali offer good academics and placement opportunities to students. In terms of facilities, both institutes are on an equal footing now. The research output of IISER Mohali is catching up. In terms of coursework, electives at both institutes are slightly different. You can check out the course structure and faculty profile from the official websites. Before joining, you should also get to know about the culture of the places. You can talk to the current students from both institutes. Do your research about both institutes and choose according to your convenience.

Q: Which IISER should I choose and why? I have a choice between IISER Mohali and IISER Bhopal.

This mainly depends on the student and where he or she is from. As the location is the major factor. Both the colleges are more or less the same, choose the one that fulfills your requirements. Bhopal might not be a very fancy place like Chandigarh. But this shouldn't influence your choice. IISER Mohali is known for its biology department while IISER Bhopal has an extremely good chemistry department. Their labs are well maintained and have every facility required by the students. Hostel rooms at IISER Bhopal are a bit small as it was built for one person per room but later the intake became 2 students per room. Hostels are Co-ed in IISER Mohali with bigger rooms and balconies. IISER Bhopal has separate hostels for boys and girls. There are around 16 clubs in IISER Mohali, fewer than IISER Bhopal. Both the colleges are more or less similar when considering academics and infrastructure. Therefore choosing any of them will be good for your career.

IISER Mohali Admissions 2024

The admission criteria for integrated PhD is on the basis of JEST rank/DST INSPIRE fellowship or KVPY Scholarship/ Rank in IIT JAM along with Interview. For BS-MS dual degree, the selection is based on KVPY channel, JEE Advanced and SCB channel. Marks scored in 10+2 will also be taken into consideration. For PhD, the selection is based on the score obtained in GATE/CSIR or UGC-NET/GPAT/ICMR-JRF/DST-INSPIRE in relevant specialization along with an interview. For BS-MS Dual and PhD program, their merit scores which are the ranks and scores attained in respective examinations would decide the final admission of the student.

Ans. Yes, the Institute has an opportunity cell that benefits students in every way. The crowd and diversity of campus is rich and wonderful.

No media center and PR in institute which makes it hard to promote it.

Admission:

I did not apply for any other instutte as i wanted to come ti IISER,mohali only given i wanted to do research in my future. I did not wanted to go into any engineering college despite cleering my JEE-Mains. This was my top priority. For IISER,Mohali i cleared iiser aptitude test and got a seat here. There are cutoffs for 7 IISER's over the country with IISER,mohali with third highest cutoff. Out of total securing about 50-70% overall is good enough to secure a seat here.

Life at IISER M: A hitchhiker's guide

Admission:

I did not want to apply to other colleges to be fair. I wanted to join an IISER for my higher studies (or maybe IISc/NISER). I couldn't get into IISc/NISER since I did not qualify, but I qualified the entrance test for IISERs (IAT: IISER Aptitude Test for all the 7 IISERs in the country) and got in, ultimately ending up at Mohali during the counselling process. I was studying at Jadavpur University for a couple of months before joining IISER Mohali, and because IISER was my dream, I left JU for IISER M. Whatever I am, a lot of it is because of my education at IISER, something which I perhaps would not have got at JU (no hate towards JU though--it is a great place as well) and I am thankful for it in many ways. There are currently 2 ways to get into IISERs: IAT, and JEE Advanced. For Advanced , you need to get a rank below 10000 to sit for counselling, and in IAT it depends--generally a general rank of <=2000 should get you an IISER. One thing--OLDER IISER DOESNT MEAN BETTER IISER. It COMPLETELY depends on your research interests (which depends on the Faculty at each IISER) and is completely a personal choice. I prefer Mohali in many ways over other IISERs like Pune/Kolkata for I feel our Astro dept is very good compared to the rest--we can even claim an astronomy minor if we want to here. So it is completely a personal choice. Counselling can be stressful, but it is a life changing experience.

I have written IAT, a common entrance teat for all IISERs. My preference list was: Pune Mohali Kolkata Thiruvananthapuram Berhampur Tirupati. I got accepted at mohali and got rejected by pune. My marks were slightly lower than cutoff for pune.

Student life at IISER Mohali

Admission:

I chose this college over the other colleges that I applied to, because it is a national level institute that is excellent in academics, and a boon for people who want to do research. Also, it was nearest to my home than the other colleges. The admission process of IISER Mohali is through 3 channels - JEE-Advanced channel, KVPY channel and IAT channel. Most of the students come through the IAT channel, in which there is a computer based test consisting of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Then according to the students' marks, the merit list is prepared after which the counseling process takes place jointly for all the IISERs in the country. For the detailed cutoffs, you can visit the website of iiser admission. The overall admission experience was pretty good. Apart from IISER, I had applied for PAU Ludhiana BSc Hons Agriculture and PGI Chandigarh Nursing and Paramedical. I got admission in all of them but as I wanted to do research, I chose IISER Mohali over the others.

Likes

The campus. Its beautiful in most of the seasons. There are lots of greenery.
Great seniors. They are just like batchmates, friends.

Dislikes

The pollution in the winter is too high.

Admission:

Students who passed higher secondary exam call apply for this course (above 75 percentile). The for is out every year in official IAT examination, once qualified the exam, you have to go through counseling to choose this college and admit in it. The exam is annual. For improvement, I would say ki the administration of the institute have to be more consistent with the dates they have declared.

The campus environment is quite good. Seniors here are quite helpful.

Dislikes

Some lab facilities have not been used since long and are not in a very good condition
The campus is located in a very hot and polluted region.

Admission:

The admission process was available through3 channels when I took admission- KVPY, JEE Advance and SBC. I got my admission through SBC channel which consisnt of CBT of 4 subjects, physics maths chemistry and biology. Each subject consisting of 15 questions of 5 marka. The quality and standards of question are quite good compared to other exams like NEET and JEE Mains, and memorising sets of questions and answers doesn't help much. The exam does check for critical thinking skills in field of science. Cut off varies every year depending on number of sudent and what they scored but scoring above 150 should so do the work

I love the idea of co-ed hostels in the campus. The environment it provides end all kind of discrimination from region to religion and gender.

Right now the students are only eligible for admission thorugh IAT exam. And they can apply for admission directly through the IAT website, and after booking seat then can register for the college in the link sent to mail by the dean of academics of IISERM. There is reservation for the SC, ST and OBCs. They also get benifit of less fee. The admission process could be easier with less lengthy forms and data could be directly collected from our admit card of the exams. Previously studnet could take admission through JEE Adv and KVPY too. The difficulty of these exams are moderate to hard.

I applied through IAT through counselling, the cutoff was around 2200 rank for General. One of the main things that you need to vary of is to pay SAF of 35,000 during counseling, other than that the admission process should go smoothly while you do need to be careful and float and freeze at the right time.

The question asked in the test are objective type. The difficulty level is moderate. If you have a thorough understanding of your undergraduate subjects, you can easily solve the paper in time. You will need to wait for a couple of hours for the result to be displayed.
The interview will last for about 20-40 mins. The interview panel usually consists of four faculty members. They usually ask basic questions to test your fundamental knowledge of the subject. If you don’t know the answer to a particular question, it is better if you say it clearly, rather than guessing.

Despite the difficult academics and hectic schedule, you will learn to enjoy your stay at the campus.

IISER Mohali isn’t the worst campus as compared to IISER Kolkata or IISER Pune. The campus is clean and well-maintained. The brick line architecture looks great all the time. The Mohali campus is a biodiversity hotspot. There are 119 different species of birds including peacocks. There is a fenced area which is known as the Ecopark. It is an untouched ecosystem and is entirely wild.

How many marks are required in the IISER aptitude test to get into IISER Pune or IISER Mohali?

This mainly depends on the student and where he or she is from. As the location is the major factor. Both the colleges are more or less the same, choose the one that fulfills your requirements.

Bhopal might not be a very fancy place like Chandigarh. But this shouldn't influence your choice.
IISER Mohali is known for its biology department while IISER Bhopal has an extremely good chemistry department.
Their labs are well maintained and have every facility required by the students.
Hostel rooms at IISER Bhopal are a bit small as it was built for one person per room but later the intake became 2 students per room.
Hostels are Co-ed in IISER Mohali with bigger rooms and balconies. IISER Bhopal has separate hostels for boys and girls.
There are around 16 clubs in IISER Mohali, fewer than IISER Bhopal.

Both the colleges are more or less similar when considering academics and infrastructure. Therefore choosing any of them will be good for your career.
