NEIGRIHMS MS Pathology FAQs
Ques. Is the Pathology programme at NEIGRIHMS awarded as MD or MS? What is the correct degree title?
Ans. Pathology is conventionally awarded as an MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree, as it is a non-surgical specialty. At NEIGRIHMS, it is listed under the MD/MS programme stream. The degree awarded is MD (Pathology), recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). This degree is valid for practice as a Pathologist, for faculty positions in medical colleges, and for further academic pursuits across India. The listing as MS in some databases is a classification convention and does not affect the actual degree awarded.
Ques. What is the workload and case volume like for MD Pathology residents at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is the apex referral hospital for the entire North Eastern region, receiving complex cases from 8 states. The Pathology department handles a high volume of histopathology specimens (surgical biopsies, resection specimens), cytopathology (FNAC, cervical smears, body fluids), haematology (peripheral smears, bone marrow biopsies), and autopsy pathology. The diverse patient population from tribal and rural backgrounds brings in conditions such as tropical infections, endemic cancers, and rare genetic disorders, providing residents with exposure to a wide spectrum of pathological conditions not commonly encountered in urban hospitals.
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MD Pathology at NEIGRIHMS and who can apply for each category?
Ans. MD Pathology at NEIGRIHMS has 3 seats: 1 seat under All India Quota (AIQ) filled through MCC counselling open to all Indian candidates, 1 seat under North East Open Category open to candidates with a Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) from any of the 8 NE states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim), and 1 seat reserved for candidates who completed their MBBS from NEIGRIHMS (irrespective of domicile). Candidates from outside the NE region can only apply for the AIQ seat through MCC.
Ques. Can candidates from outside the North Eastern states apply for MD Pathology at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, candidates from outside the NE region can apply for the 1 AIQ seat in MD Pathology at NEIGRIHMS through MCC AIQ PG counselling. However, they are not eligible for the NE Open Category seat (which requires PRC from an NE state) or the NEIGRIHMS pass-out seat (which requires MBBS from NEIGRIHMS). The AIQ seat is filled purely on NEET PG merit with no regional restriction. Pathology is generally considered a less competitive specialty in NEET PG counselling, making it relatively accessible for candidates with moderate NEET PG ranks.
Ques. Is there any bond or service obligation after completing MD Pathology from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. There is no post-completion rural or state service bond for MD/MS graduates from NEIGRIHMS, unlike many state government medical colleges. However, there is an intra-course bond: if a student leaves the programme before completion, they are liable to pay a penalty of Rs. 10 lakhs (leaving in Year 1), Rs. 15 lakhs (leaving in Year 2), or Rs. 20 lakhs (leaving in Year 3), plus a certificate release fee of Rs. 50,000. After completing the course, graduates are free to pursue any career path without any mandatory service obligation to NEIGRIHMS or the Government.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing MD Pathology from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. MD Pathology graduates from NEIGRIHMS are well-positioned for careers as Pathologists in government hospitals (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, state medical colleges), private hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and blood banks. There is a significant demand for qualified Pathologists in medical colleges as faculty, given the NMC requirement for Pathology faculty in all medical colleges. Graduates can also pursue sub-specialty fellowships in Oncopathology, Neuropathology, Haematopathology, or Molecular Pathology. The degree from a central government institute like NEIGRIHMS carries strong credibility for government recruitment and academic positions.
