NEIGRIHMS MS OBG FAQs
Ques. Is NEET PG the only entrance exam accepted for MS OBG admission at NEIGRIHMS, or are there other exams?
Ans. NEET PG is the sole entrance exam accepted for admission to the MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology programme at NEIGRIHMS for the All India quota seats. For the Open NE category and NEIGRIHMS alumni quota seats, NEIGRIHMS previously conducted its own entrance exam, but as per the 2025-26 prospectus, selection for all seats is now entirely based on NEET PG scores. There is no separate institute-level entrance test. Candidates must secure at least 50% marks in NEET PG to be considered for any category of seats.
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MS OBG at NEIGRIHMS, and how competitive is it?
Ans. There are only 2 total seats for MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology at NEIGRIHMS per session: 1 seat under the All India quota (filled through NEET PG merit) and 1 seat under the Open NE/NEIGRIHMS alumni quota. This makes it extremely competitive. The All India quota seat is open to candidates from across India, while the NE/NEIGRIHMS quota seat is reserved for domiciles of the 8 North Eastern states or NEIGRIHMS MBBS alumni. Given the institute's premier status, the NEET PG rank required is typically very high.
Ques. Do MS OBG students at NEIGRIHMS receive a stipend, and what is the approximate amount?
Ans. Yes, all PG students (Junior Residents) at NEIGRIHMS receive monthly emoluments as per the Central Government residency scheme, along with applicable allowances. While the exact stipend amount is not published in the prospectus, Central Government PG residents typically receive a stipend in the range of Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 75,000 per month (including DA and other allowances), which is revised periodically. Students also receive free or subsidised hostel accommodation (subject to availability), which significantly reduces the cost of living. The stipend is not paid during any extension period due to attendance shortfall.
Ques. What happens if a student wants to leave the MS OBG course midway at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for PG students. If a student leaves the course before completing one year, they must pay Rs. 10 lakhs as a penalty. Leaving in the second year attracts a penalty of Rs. 15 lakhs, and leaving in the third year (without completing the course) attracts Rs. 20 lakhs. Additionally, original certificates are retained by the institute and will only be returned after the bond penalty is paid. A separate fee of Rs. 50,000 is also charged for the return of certificates. Students should carefully consider this commitment before joining.
Ques. What is the clinical exposure like for MS OBG residents at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at NEIGRIHMS offers comprehensive clinical training. The department has a 30-bed main ward, an 18-bed gynaecology extension ward, a High Dependency Unit (HDU), and a 24x7 labour ward with a Neonatal ICU. Residents get hands-on training in major surgeries (LSCS, abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy, oncosurgery), advanced laparoscopic procedures (total laparoscopic hysterectomy, lap cystectomy), ART procedures (IUI, ICSI, IVF), and management of high-risk pregnancies. Special clinics for High Risk Pregnancy, Gynaecological Oncology, and Infertility are held every Thursday. As a premier referral hospital for the entire North East India, the patient load and case variety is extensive.
Ques. Can candidates from outside the North Eastern states apply for MS OBG at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, candidates from outside the North Eastern states can apply for the 1 All India quota seat available for MS OBG at NEIGRIHMS. This seat is open to any Indian national based purely on NEET PG merit. However, the Open NE category seat (the other 1 seat) is exclusively for domiciles of the 8 North Eastern states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim) or NEIGRIHMS MBBS alumni. Candidates from outside the NE region who do not have a PRC from these states should not apply for the NE/NEIGRIHMS quota seats, as their candidature will be rejected.
