NEIGRIHMS MS Anaesthesiology FAQs
Ques. How many seats are available for MD/MS Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS, and what is the category-wise distribution?
Ans. There are a total of 4 seats for MD/MS Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS for the 2025-26 session, as per the PG Prospectus. Of these, 2 seats fall under the All India Quota (open to all Indian nationals based on NEET PG merit), 1 seat is under the Open North East category (for domicile/permanent residents of the 8 North Eastern states), and 1 seat is reserved for bonafide MBBS graduates of NEIGRIHMS. Candidates from outside the North East can only compete for the All India Quota seats. The seat matrix may be subject to revision based on NMC approvals each year.
Ques. Is MD Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS a good choice for candidates from the North East compared to other government institutes?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is the premier postgraduate medical institute of the North East, established on the lines of AIIMS and PGIMER. The Department of Anaesthesiology is well-equipped with 8 operation theatres, a 16-bedded CCU, a Pain Clinic, and a PAC Clinic, and provides exposure to a wide range of surgical specialties including Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, and Interventional Radiology. The combination of a Central Government stipend (Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 95,000/month), very low tuition fees (total Rs. 2.07 lakhs for 3 years), and quality training makes it one of the best options for PG Anaesthesiology in the region. The institute's location in Shillong also offers a pleasant environment for study.
Ques. What is the difference between MD and MS in Anaesthesiology, and which degree does NEIGRIHMS award?
Ans. In India, Anaesthesiology is predominantly awarded as an MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree, as it is a non-surgical specialty. The MS (Master of Surgery) degree is typically awarded for surgical specialties. NEIGRIHMS awards the MD degree in Anaesthesiology, as recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The course listed as "MS Anaesthesiology" in some databases refers to the same MD Anaesthesiology programme at NEIGRIHMS. Candidates should note that the degree awarded will be MD (Anaesthesiology) as per NMC norms.
Ques. What kind of clinical exposure does a PG student get in Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. PG students (Junior Residents) in Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS get comprehensive clinical exposure across all major surgical specialties. The department provides anaesthesia services for Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Urology, Surgical Oncology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Interventional Radiology. Students also get hands-on training in Critical Care management in the 16-bedded CCU, Pain Clinic procedures (both interventional and non-interventional), Labour Analgesia, and Post-operative Acute Pain Services. The department also provides 24-hour resuscitation services to the entire hospital, giving residents broad emergency exposure.
Ques. What is the bond obligation for MD Anaesthesiology students at NEIGRIHMS, and what happens if a student wants to leave?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. Students are required to execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs. 20 at the time of joining. If a student leaves the course before completing one year, they are liable to pay Rs. 10 lakhs as compensation to the institute. Leaving in the second year attracts a penalty of Rs. 15 lakhs, and leaving in the third year without completing the course attracts Rs. 20 lakhs. Original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course. If a student decides not to join after counselling, certificates are returned only after depositing Rs. 50,000. This policy is strictly enforced.
Ques. Can a candidate who has completed MBBS from outside the North East apply for the Open North East category seats at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. No. The Open North East category seats at NEIGRIHMS are reserved exclusively for candidates who are domicile or permanent residents of one of the 8 North Eastern states: Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Candidates must submit a valid Domicile or Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) from the competent authority (District Commissioner or authorised government official) of their respective state. Simply having completed MBBS from a college in the North East does not qualify a candidate for the NE open category unless they hold a valid PRC. Candidates without a PRC from these states can only apply for the All India Quota seats.
