NEIGRIHMS M.Sc Critical Care Nursing FAQs
Ques. Is Critical Care Nursing a separate M.Sc. specialisation at NEIGRIHMS or part of another subject?
Ans. At NEIGRIHMS, M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing is offered as a sub-specialty under Medical Surgical Nursing, not as a standalone separate specialisation. The degree awarded is M.Sc. Nursing (Medical Surgical Nursing) with a specialisation in Critical Care Nursing. This is in line with the Indian Nursing Council's curriculum framework. There are 2 dedicated seats for this sub-specialty within the total 10 M.Sc. Nursing seats offered annually at NEIGRIHMS.
Ques. Is the NEIGRIHMS M.Sc. Nursing entrance exam conducted only at Shillong? Can I appear from another city?
Ans. Yes, the NEIGRIHMS M.Sc. Nursing entrance examination is conducted only at Shillong (the exam centre is intimated through the admit card). Candidates from across India who wish to apply must travel to Shillong for the examination at their own expense. No TA/DA is provided by NEIGRIHMS for appearing in the entrance exam. This is an important practical consideration for candidates from outside the North Eastern region.
Ques. What is the work experience requirement for M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. B.Sc. Nursing graduates must have at least 1 year of work experience after obtaining their B.Sc. Nursing degree before applying. Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing candidates must have at least 1 year of work experience prior to or after their Post Basic degree. The experience certificate must be submitted along with the application form. Candidates who are likely to complete the required experience by the last date of application submission should submit their experience certificate from their employer at the time of counselling.
Ques. What kind of clinical exposure does the M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing programme offer at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS Hospital is a 500-bed apex referral hospital serving the entire North Eastern region. The Critical Care Nursing students gain hands-on training in the ICU, CCU, and other critical care units of NEIGRIHMS, which handle complex cases referred from 8 states. In addition to NEIGRIHMS Hospital, students are also sent for clinical postings to other hospitals and health centres in and around Shillong, including Ganesh Das Government Maternity and Child Health Hospital and various urban and rural health centres. This multi-setting exposure is a significant advantage of the programme.
Ques. Can male candidates apply for M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, male candidates can apply for M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing at NEIGRIHMS. The eligibility condition regarding Midwifery applies only to Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing and Community Health Nursing specialisations. For Critical Care Nursing (a sub-specialty of Medical Surgical Nursing), male candidates who did not opt for Midwifery in their B.Sc. Nursing course are fully eligible to apply, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria including the minimum 55% marks and 1 year of work experience.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc. Critical Care Nursing from NEIGRIHMS are well-positioned for roles as ICU/CCU Nurse Specialists, Nurse Educators in nursing colleges, Clinical Nurse Managers in critical care departments, and Research Nurses in medical institutions. The degree from a central government institute like NEIGRIHMS carries significant credibility for government hospital recruitment (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, state government hospitals) as well as private tertiary care hospitals. Graduates can also pursue Ph.D. in Nursing or apply for faculty positions in nursing colleges. The growing demand for trained critical care nurses in India, especially post-pandemic, makes this specialisation highly relevant.
