NEIGRIHMS M.Sc Child Health Nursing FAQs
Ques. Is the NEIGRIHMS M.Sc. Child Health Nursing entrance exam open to candidates from all over India, or only from the North East?
Ans. The entrance examination and admission are open to all eligible candidates from across India under the All India Open category (5 out of 10 seats). There is no domicile restriction for the All India Open category. However, 3 seats are reserved for NEIGRIHMS Alumni (candidates who completed their B.Sc. Nursing from NEIGRIHMS College of Nursing), and 2 seats are for NEIGRIHMS Staff. Candidates from outside the NE region can apply and compete for the 5 All India Open seats.
Ques. What is the entrance exam pattern for NEIGRIHMS M.Sc. Nursing, and how should I prepare for Child Health Nursing?
Ans. The entrance exam consists of 100 MCQs covering Medical Surgical Nursing (17 questions), Community Health Nursing (17), Obstetric Nursing (17), Child Health Nursing (17), Mental Health Nursing (17), Trends in Nursing (10), and General Knowledge (5). For Child Health Nursing specialisation, you should focus strongly on all 5 nursing subjects as the exam is common for all M.Sc. Nursing specialties. The Child Health Nursing section (17 marks) covers paediatric nursing concepts from your B.Sc. Nursing curriculum. Standard INC-recommended textbooks and previous year question papers are the best preparation resources.
Ques. What is the clinical training exposure like for M.Sc. Child Health Nursing students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. M.Sc. Child Health Nursing students at NEIGRIHMS receive clinical training primarily at NEIGRIHMS Hospital, which is the apex referral hospital for the entire North Eastern region and handles complex paediatric cases from across 8 NE states. Students are also posted at affiliated community health centres, urban health centres, and other hospitals in Meghalaya for community-based paediatric nursing experience. The Paediatrics department at NEIGRIHMS is well-equipped and handles a wide range of neonatal and paediatric cases, providing comprehensive clinical exposure.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Sc. Child Health Nursing from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc. Child Health (Paediatric) Nursing can work as Paediatric Nurse Specialists, Neonatal ICU (NICU) nurses, Nurse Educators in nursing colleges, Nursing Administrators, or Clinical Research Coordinators. The degree is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and affiliated to NEHU, making it valid for teaching positions in nursing colleges (as per INC norms, M.Sc. Nursing is required for lecturer positions). Graduates from NEIGRIHMS are well-regarded in the NE region and can also apply for central government nursing positions.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for M.Sc. Nursing students at NEIGRIHMS, and what are the living costs?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is provided to M.Sc. Nursing students subject to availability. The hostel fee is Rs. 1,000 per year (very nominal). Mess charges are Rs. 10,950 per quarter (Rs. 120 per day at current rates), payable quarterly. The first quarter mess fee is deposited at the time of admission. The campus is located at Mawdiangdiang, about 9-10 km from Shillong city centre, so hostel accommodation is practically essential for outstation students. Students have noted that while the hostel facilities are adequate, the mess food quality could be improved.
Ques. Can in-service nurses (currently employed) apply for M.Sc. Child Health Nursing at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, in-service candidates can apply, but they must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer and submit it at the time of counselling. Additionally, in-service candidates joining M.Sc. Nursing must submit their relieving certificate from their employer at the time of joining. It is important to note that if a student applies for a job during the course and subsequently joins it, their studentship stands cancelled and the security deposit is also forfeited. Candidates should therefore plan their career transition carefully before enrolling.
