NEIGRIHMS MS ENT FAQs
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MS ENT at NEIGRIHMS, and who can apply for which category?
Ans. As per the 2025-26 PG Prospectus, there are 2 seats for MS Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at NEIGRIHMS. Of these, 1 seat is under the All India Quota (open to all Indian nationals based on NEET PG merit) and 1 seat is reserved for bonafide MBBS graduates of NEIGRIHMS. There are no Open North East category seats for Otorhinolaryngology in the current seat matrix. This means candidates from outside the North East who are not NEIGRIHMS alumni can only compete for the 1 All India Quota seat, making it highly competitive.
Ques. What specialised surgical training does the MS ENT programme at NEIGRIHMS offer?
Ans. The MS ENT programme at NEIGRIHMS offers comprehensive surgical training across all sub-specialties of Otorhinolaryngology. The department is equipped with Carl Zeiss high-end microscopes, HD endoscopic camera systems with Karl Storz and Stryker microdebriders for FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery), and fibreoptic flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopes. Residents get exposure to Head and Neck cancer surgery, Cochlear Implant procedures, temporal bone surgery, airway management using adult and paediatric rigid bronchoscopes, and reconstructive procedures. The department also runs specialised clinics in vertigo, tinnitus, speech and voice disorders, providing a well-rounded ENT training experience.
Ques. Does NEIGRIHMS have a Cochlear Implant programme, and do MS ENT residents get exposure to it?
Ans. Yes, NEIGRIHMS has an active Cochlear Implant and Rehabilitation Clinic that runs on a weekly basis. MS ENT residents at NEIGRIHMS get exposure to cochlear implant procedures and post-implant rehabilitation, which is a significant advantage as cochlear implant surgery is a highly specialised skill not available at all ENT training centres. The department's vision also includes providing further impetus to the cochlear implant programme, indicating plans for expansion. This makes NEIGRIHMS one of the few centres in the North East offering cochlear implant training to PG residents.
Ques. What audiological and vestibular investigation facilities are available in the ENT department at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. The ENT department at NEIGRIHMS has a comprehensive audiological setup including Pure Tone Audiometry, Impedance Audiometry (tympanometry and stapedial reflexes), BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) for objective hearing assessment, OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) for neonatal and paediatric hearing screening, and VNG (Video Nystagmography) for evaluation of patients with dizziness and balance disorders. This range of audiological investigations provides MS ENT residents with thorough training in both diagnostic audiology and vestibular assessment, which are essential competencies for a practising ENT surgeon.
Ques. What is the bond obligation for MS ENT students at NEIGRIHMS, and what are the consequences of leaving mid-course?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. Students must execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs. 20 at the time of joining. If a student leaves the course before completing one year, they are liable to pay Rs. 10 lakhs as compensation. Leaving in the second year attracts Rs. 15 lakhs, and leaving in the third year without completing the course attracts Rs. 20 lakhs. Original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course. If a student decides not to join after counselling, certificates are returned only after depositing Rs. 50,000. This policy is strictly enforced and candidates should be fully committed before accepting a seat.
Ques. How does MS ENT training at NEIGRIHMS compare to other government ENT training centres in the North East?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is the only Central Government postgraduate medical institute in the North East, established on the lines of AIIMS and PGIMER. The ENT department offers a breadth of training that is unmatched in the region, including FESS, cochlear implant surgery, Head and Neck cancer surgery, temporal bone surgery, and comprehensive audiological and vestibular diagnostics. The combination of a Central Government stipend (Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 95,000/month), very low tuition fees (total Rs. 2.07 lakhs for 3 years), NMC-recognised degree, and quality surgical training makes NEIGRIHMS the top choice for MS ENT aspirants from the North East. The institute's referral hospital status also ensures a high volume and variety of ENT cases.
