NEIGRIHMS MD O&G FAQs
Ques. How many seats are available for MD Obstetrics and Gynaecology at NEIGRIHMS, and what is the seat distribution?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS offers 2 seats for MD Obstetrics and Gynaecology per session. Of these, 1 seat falls under the All India Quota (AIQ) filled through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in, open to all NEET PG qualified candidates across India. The remaining 1 seat is shared between the Open North East category (for domicile/permanent residents of the 8 NE states) and the NEIGRIHMS pass-out quota (for candidates who completed MBBS from NEIGRIHMS). Given the very limited seats, competition is extremely high, and candidates typically need a strong NEET PG rank to secure admission.
Ques. What surgical and clinical training can MD Obs & Gynae students expect at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. MD Obstetrics and Gynaecology students at NEIGRIHMS receive comprehensive surgical and clinical training. The department performs major surgeries including Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS), abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy, total laparoscopic hysterectomy, oncosurgery, and tuboplasty. Minor procedures such as D&C, D&E, endometrial biopsy, colposcopy, and IUI are also regularly performed. The 24x7 emergency labour ward, HDU, and Neonatal ICU provide exposure to high-risk obstetric cases. Special clinics for High Risk Pregnancy, Gynaecological Oncology, and Infertility run every Thursday, giving students subspecialty exposure.
Ques. Is the ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) centre at NEIGRIHMS operational for PG training?
Ans. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at NEIGRIHMS is in the process of setting up an ART centre with facilities for Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), ICSI, and IVF. While IUI is already being performed as part of OPD services, the full ART centre with ICSI and IVF capabilities is being developed. This is a significant addition for PG students, as exposure to reproductive medicine and ART procedures is increasingly important for a well-rounded Obs & Gynae training. Students should confirm the current status of the ART centre at the time of joining.
Ques. What is the bond obligation for MD students at NEIGRIHMS, and what are the financial penalties for leaving midway?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. If a Junior Resident (PG) leaves the course before completing one year, they must pay Rs. 10 Lakhs to the institute. The penalty increases to Rs. 15 Lakhs if they leave during the second year, and Rs. 20 Lakhs if they leave during the third year without completing the course. Additionally, original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course and are returned only after the bond amount is deposited. If a candidate decides not to join after counselling, they must pay Rs. 50,000 to get their certificates back.
Ques. What is the patient load and case mix like in the Obs & Gynae department at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is the apex referral hospital for the North Eastern region, which means the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department receives a diverse and high-volume case mix including high-risk pregnancies, complicated deliveries, gynaecological malignancies, and infertility cases. The department has a 30-bed main ward, an 18-bed extension ward, and a dedicated HDU for critical patients. OPDs run on all days from 9 AM to 3 PM except Sundays and holidays. The emergency labour ward operates 24x7. This high patient load and case complexity make NEIGRIHMS an excellent training ground for Obs & Gynae PG students.
Ques. Can a candidate who has already done an MD/MS in another subject apply for MD Obstetrics and Gynaecology at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. No. NEIGRIHMS strictly does not allow candidates who have already completed or are currently pursuing an MD/MS degree in any subject to apply for admission to MD/MS courses at NEIGRIHMS. This rule is strictly enforced, and if it is found at a later stage that a candidate gave a false undertaking at the time of counselling, their candidature/registration will be cancelled immediately. Candidates must submit a declaration to this effect at the time of counselling. This policy ensures that seats are available for fresh MBBS graduates seeking their first postgraduate degree.
