JBAS Ph.D. Admission 2025 Eligibility Criteria

JBAS admissions to the Ph.D. courses, candidates should satisfy the following criteria:

• Must possess a Master's degree in the appropriate discipline from an accredited university.

• A minimum of 55% overall marks (or equivalent grade) in PG/M.Phil. is required.

• A relaxation of 5% (i.e., 50%) is permitted for SC/ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and differently-abled candidates.

• Candidates who have completed M.Phil course work successfully may be eligible to upgrade to direct Ph.D.

• NET / SET / GATE are not required for consideration by all candidates.

• They may be alternative or exempt candidates in some scenarios (like direct admission without entrance at university level).

• Generally, candidates must take the entrance examination + Interview conducted by the University of Madras (since JBAS is affiliated).

• Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET / CSIR-NET / SLET / GATE / Teacher Fellowship are, generally, exempt from writing the written entrance examination but must still take the interview.

• Notification & Application - You should apply online through the University of Madras Ph.D. portal (which usually occurs twice a year; January and July); upload documents and pay fee.

• Screening - Verify eligibility based on your PG/M.Phil. marks and discipline and proposed research topic.

• Entrance Test - There will be a written test in the subject/research methodology, unless you have already cleared NET/SET/GATE, in which case you are exempt.

• Interview/Viva - Then, the short-listed candidates are invited to present their research proposal to the interview committee and the final evaluation is based on your preparedness/interview and associated academic records.

• Selection & Approval - The final merit will be prepared based on the entrance test, interview and your academic record. The merit will require approval from the Doctoral Committee.
