Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers 25+ scholarships, of which 12+ are accessible to Indian applicants. Awards span UG, MS and PhD, ranging from partial USD 15,000 (INR 14.18 Lakhs) reductions to full PhD funding with stipend.
Most Indian admits stack a WPI merit award with an external Indian scholarship such as Fulbright-Nehru, Inlaks or KC Mahindra. Assistantships push net PG cost close to zero for competitive research candidates.
- Standard UG tuition (2026-27): USD 61,790 (INR 58.39 Lakhs) per year

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Scholarships for UG Students
WPI awards merit scholarships automatically at the point of admission. Indian applicants receive the same consideration as any other international candidate. No separate scholarship form exists for the four core UG awards.
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline (tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| WPI Presidential Scholarship | Up to USD 30,000/year (INR 28.35 Lakhs) | Top academic profile, 3.9+ GPA equivalent, strong STEM record | February 1, 2027 (RD) |
| WPI Trustees’ Scholarship | Up to USD 25,000/year (INR 23.63 Lakhs) | 3.7+ GPA equivalent with strong STEM depth | February 1, 2027 (RD) |
| WPI Dean’s Scholarship | Up to USD 20,000/year (INR 18.90 Lakhs) | Above-average academic profile in Class 12 or equivalent | February 1, 2027 (RD) |
| WPI Global Scholars Award | USD 15,000-25,000/year (INR 14.18-23.63 Lakhs) | International undergraduate applicants showing academic promise | February 1, 2027 (RD) |
| Need-Based Financial Aid | Varies, packaged after CSS Profile review | Demonstrated need with CSS Profile plus admission | November 1, 2026 (ED I); January 15, 2027 (ED II) |
The Presidential and Trustees’ bands together shortlist the highest academic profiles in each admit pool. Test-optional candidates remain eligible for merit review based on transcripts and STEM coursework depth.
WPI’s need-based aid for international students is limited compared to its merit budget. Indian UG applicants targeting affordability should treat merit as the primary lever and need-based aid as supplementary.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Master’s scholarships at WPI come in three forms. Graduate Merit Scholarships apply automatically at admission. Assistantships require departmental nomination and are competitive.
| Scholarship / Funding | Amount | Eligibility | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Merit Scholarship | 25% to 50% tuition waiver (INR 7.19-14.37 Lakhs) | Strong academics and GRE where required; no separate application | Automatic with admission decision |
| Graduate Assistantship (TA/RA) | Full tuition waiver plus stipend (INR 28.75 Lakhs + stipend) | Merit-based, department nomination, priority to research-fit candidates | Rolling; often awarded after first semester |
| Presidential Graduate Fellowship | Full tuition plus enhanced stipend | Exceptional research profile, publications or patents preferred | January 15, 2027 (tentative) |
| Department Fellowships (Robotics, CS, Data Science) | Partial tuition plus stipend, program-specific | Program-specific, invitation-only for top admits | With admission decision |
MS Robotics Engineering, MS Computer Science and MS Data Science are the three programs where Indian students report the strongest assistantship pipelines. Departmental TA and RA offers usually appear after the first semester if academic performance holds.
Reddit Insight: MS Robotics applicants report that early Fall submissions (before December 15) correlate with better assistantship shortlists, since TA slots are filled department-first rather than centrally.
Documents typically expected for assistantship consideration include:
- Statement of Purpose with a research-fit paragraph naming target faculty
- Two academic recommendations, ideally from research supervisors
- Publication list, GitHub or portfolio for CS and Robotics candidates
- Transcript showing depth in the target subfield
Stacking a 50% Merit Scholarship with a departmental RA reduces net PG cost to close to zero. Living costs of roughly USD 18,000 (INR 17.01 Lakhs) per year remain the student’s responsibility.

India-Specific Scholarships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute
WPI does not run a dedicated India-only scholarship at any level. Indian students access the same merit awards as all international applicants. The realistic funding path combines a WPI merit award with an external Indian scholarship.
| Route | Award | Amount | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|
| WPI Internal (UG) | Presidential / Trustees / Dean’s / Global Scholars | USD 15,000-30,000/year (INR 14.18-28.35 Lakhs) | All Indian UG admits, no separate form |
| WPI Internal (MS) | Graduate Merit plus Assistantship | 50% waiver plus stipend once RA offered | Strong academic plus research-fit MS candidates |
| External plus WPI Combo | Fulbright-Nehru plus WPI Assistantship | Full tuition, living plus stipend | MS applicants with 3+ years of work experience |
| External Loan-Scholarship | JN Tata Endowment plus WPI Merit | INR 10 Lakhs plus WPI waiver | Candidates straight from Bachelor’s, no work experience |
The Fulbright-Nehru plus WPI Assistantship combination is the highest-value stack for Indian MS applicants. Both awards require separate applications, and Fulbright deadlines fall roughly a year before intake.
For UG applicants, the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation cannot combine with WPI’s undergraduate awards because Inlaks funds postgraduate study only. KC Mahindra similarly serves PG candidates.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute PhD Scholarships
PhD admits at WPI receive full funding as the standard offer. This includes a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend covering Worcester living costs. Indian PhD candidates in STEM departments typically pay zero out of pocket for tuition.
| Award | Coverage | Eligibility | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard PhD Funding Package | Full tuition (INR 28.75 Lakhs) plus USD 30,000-35,000 stipend (INR 28.35-33.08 Lakhs) | Admitted PhD candidates in STEM departments | Automatic with admission |
| Presidential Graduate Fellowship | Full tuition plus enhanced stipend, roughly USD 5,000 (INR 4.73 Lakhs) higher | Top PhD admits, department nomination | No separate application |
| Departmental Research Assistantship | Full tuition waiver plus RA stipend | PhD students working under a funded PI | Discussed post admission |
| Departmental Teaching Assistantship | Full tuition waiver plus TA stipend | PhD students supporting undergraduate courses | Discussed post admission |
Reddit Insight: Indian PhD admits in WPI’s Robotics and Computer Science departments report 100% funding coverage across five years. MS students see 25-50% merit reductions unless they later secure a departmental RA.
Presidential Graduate Fellowships add roughly USD 5,000 (INR 4.73 Lakhs) per year on top of the standard PhD package. Fellowship nominations come from admitting departments, not a central committee.

External Government Scholarships for Indian Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute
External Indian scholarships stack cleanly with WPI merit awards. The five listed below cover the most-used routes for WPI admits. Deadlines fall between March and May of the year before intake.
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline (tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship | Full tuition, living, travel | Indian citizens, 3+ years work experience, 55%+ Bachelor’s | May 15, 2026 for the 2027-28 cycle |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Up to USD 100,000 (INR 94.50 Lakhs) | Indian citizens under 30 with strong PG admits | March 2027 (annual cycle) |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan-Scholarship | Up to INR 10 Lakhs | Indian nationals under 45 admitted to a foreign university | March 2027 (annual cycle) |
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs | Indian nationals with top academic profile plus PG admit letter | March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship | 50% grant plus 50% loan | Indian citizens with financial need, age 30 max, Ismaili priority | March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
Fulbright-Nehru is the highest-value external route but requires three years of professional work experience and a public-service angle. Inlaks and KC Mahindra suit candidates coming straight from undergraduate degrees.
Applying to two or three external scholarships simultaneously is standard practice. Award decisions from Inlaks, Tata and KC Mahindra usually arrive between April and June each year.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum funding an Indian student can secure at WPI?
Ans. An Indian PhD admit in STEM can secure USD 60,000+ (INR 56.70 Lakhs) per year, covering tuition plus stipend. MS admits with a Fulbright-Nehru fellowship receive full tuition, living and travel funding. UG admits max out at roughly USD 30,000 (INR 28.35 Lakhs) per year through the Presidential Scholarship.
Ques. When should Indian students apply for WPI scholarships and funding?
Ans. Submit the WPI application by the Early Decision deadline of November 1, 2026 for UG applicants targeting Fall 2027. For MS applicants, apply by January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027 intake. External scholarships like Fulbright-Nehru open in March 2026 for the 2027-28 cycle, so parallel timelines are essential.
Ques. Do Indian applicants need to submit a separate scholarship application?
Ans. No separate application is needed for WPI merit scholarships at UG or MS level. Award decisions arrive with the admission letter. Assistantships and external scholarships such as Fulbright-Nehru and KC Mahindra require their own applications submitted directly to those bodies.
Ques. What GPA and test scores does WPI expect for top merit scholarships?
Ans. Presidential Scholarship recipients typically hold a 3.9+ GPA equivalent (roughly 90%+ in Class 12 CBSE or 95%+ in state boards). Trustees’ recipients hover around 3.7 GPA equivalent. SAT scores of 1450+ or ACT 33+ strengthen the profile, though WPI remains test-optional for 2027 admits.
Ques. How does the WPI Graduate Assistantship work for Indian MS students?
Ans. A Graduate Assistantship offers a full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend of USD 2,000-2,800 (INR 1.89-2.65 Lakhs). Assistantships are department-controlled and rarely bundled with the initial MS admission offer. Indian students typically secure a TA or RA slot after the first semester through faculty outreach and coursework performance.
Ques. How much of the Worcester living cost does a WPI merit scholarship cover?
Ans. WPI merit scholarships cover tuition only and do not extend to living costs. Estimated annual living costs in Worcester run USD 18,000-19,000 (INR 17.01-17.96 Lakhs) for on-campus students. Indian students typically use external scholarships such as Fulbright-Nehru or education loans to cover the living component.

- For robotics there is kind of good faculty here and labs are also fine , basically for the amount you are giving it’s worth it.
Dislikes
- Could improve an alumni network and have more practical based curriculum
- My rental costs are $500 a month and I used different websites recommended by the university; even student whatsapp groups are a good source for listings.

- WPI project based learning curriculum is highly regarded with its distinctive WPI plan allowing us to gain hands on experience through real world experience/applications like mqp and iqp.
- Our university has a global project centre at recreational centre which gives the student with good opportunity to showcase their projects worldwide.
- People are really collaborative here and the staff are encouraging to group work reflecting real world environment problem solving.
Dislikes
- The intense 7 week term system can be challenging as it compresses course material into a shorter time frame with multiple projects bombarding from all subjects with exams and quiz
- The location is pleasant but the town is small and people don't come around often less summer events. Feels isolated
- Career fairs are competitive as like on campus jobs are hard to get and hard to reach
Scholarship
- I'm glad to announce that I was awarded a $9,600 scholarship based on my academic performance, Statement of Purpose (SOP), and Letters of Recommendation (LOR). The university's scholarship committee reviewed these materials to determine the award amount. While scholarship amounts vary for every student, ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 per year, I am pleased to have earned a sizable gift to help fund my study. Though I am not aware of the exact criteria utilised to establish individual scholarship amounts, obtaining $9,600 is a major acknowledgement of my academic achievements and potential.
- This prize will help me minimise my educational expenses and validate my efforts throughout the application process. It is satisfying to know that the university regards my academic profile and sees possibilities for my future achievements.
- I located my apartment using a combination of sites, including the WPI Off-Campus Housing Facebook group and recommendations from seniors. I also joined the "WPI Indian Students" WhatsApp group, which was quite useful for locating roommates and receiving housing advice.
- My monthly rent is $800 for a shared apartment in Worcester, which is around 1.2 miles from college (15-minute walk or 5-minute drive). This includes essential necessities like heating and internet. Most apartments in this region vary from $700 to $1,000 per person for shared lodgings. Our apartment features a fully equipped kitchen, in-unit laundry, and parking.
- High competition for apartments near college.
- Understanding Lease Terms as an International Student
- Initial security deposit and first/last month's rent requirements
- Finding Reliable Roommates
- Most Indian students, including myself, live in neighbourhoods such as Highland Street, June Street, and Park Avenue. These places are popular since they are close to campus and offer easy access to Indian grocery stores and eateries.
- Begin your search as least three months before arriving.
- Join the WPI housing groups on Facebook and WhatsApp early.
- Consider subletting first to avoid signing a lease from abroad.
- Share a room with other students to save money.
- Always visit the unit (or have someone visit) before signing.
- Read the lease details carefully, and budget for utilities that are not included.
- Verify the landlord's credibility with past tenants if possible.

- My university has great nerds around to have a competitive environment
- University organizes events which are helpful for students in career wise
- The network benefits at the college is unimaginable such as getting referrals. Most of them try to help each other.
Dislikes
- Most of them get on campus jobs without any experience.
- The undergraduate courses are much efficient than graduate courses
- The dominance of Technology is quite good in STEM Fields but limited career opportunities.
Scholarship
- I've obtained a merit scholarship of $2500 per year. It was automatically given my the university. Others received scholarships too but not more than $2500. The least I heard was $700. I believe 80% of students receive scholarships each year. I heard few colleges which gave more scholarship at my time. I think most of the scholarships are based on merit rather than admissions.
- I searched off campus accomodation in the whatsapp groups. My monthly rent is $400 in a shared room of 3 in each room in a 2bhk apartment. The main challenge is commuting as there is no proper commuting options. I suggest people take accomodations near to the univeristy. This makes a huge difference as I struggle going to campus from a one mile distance.

I used Collegepond for the admission process. They helped me to select colleges and then I applied to them. They also helped in the visa process which is quite good and their service is great and is a good option as well.
Engineering is something that I have allows been passionate about. I hope to use my degree to help people and pursue a career in pharmaceuticals. This college gave me the ability to fully immerse myself in STEM.
