  • There are WhatsApp groups where you can connect with others, and there is also Maitri, an Indian graduate student association. Maitri helps link newcomers with existing groups and provides roommate finder sheets that match roommates based on preferences. Additionally, some online agents can help with this as well. Joining the Maitri student association is a great way to get started!

  • Majorly theoretical. But it depends on what courses you take. Difficulty is medium to hard if you take medium to heavy courses.
  • Positive aspects of some courses – lots of hands-on projects and workshops.
  • Negative aspects of some courses – mandatory attendance and a very strict grading system. Every course is of 3 credits and is conducted on 2 days of the week, 1 hr 15 mins each class.
  • Average number of students depends on the course and can range anywhere between 180 and as low as 8

Fees

  • Tuition – 20K$ (there were 10-15 different mandatory components)
  • Student health insurance – $2.8k
  • Usually undergrads live on campus (additional fees and meal plans), grad students find off-campus housing on their own
  • Fees are charged every semester.
  • Estimate monthly expenses (if you want to stay in shared rooms) – $600 to $700 (including groceries, utilities, rent, etc.).

  • The academics are generally good at NCSU; however, it varies according to the professors teaching the course. For example, the same course can be difficult under one professor and easy under another.
  • There are 300 students in some classes and just 20 in others (special topic courses). Lectures are very helpful for learning the topics and they are also available online through NCSU's Panopto portal to watch later for revision.

Fees

  • It depends on credits. each course is 3 credits (except for the orientation course, which is 1 credit). i have taken 10 credits for the first semester, 9 credits for the second, 9 for the third and 3 credits for the last semester. That means 3 courses plus a compulsory orientation course for the first semester, 3 courses for the second semester, 3 courses for the third semester, and 1 course for the last semester. this is billed as such: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/finances/tuition-and-fees/tuition-and-fee-rates/graduate-students/ so for me it was 21,266.25 USD for the first three semesters and 7,088.76 USD for the last semester, according to the credits I took (note credits == hours).
  • Health insurance cost is on top of tuition fees, which i dont remember exactly right now. but you can buy a cheaper health insurance from india and use that to waive that fee (which is what i did)
  • Semester-wise: $900 a month: $625 rent (private room + private bath), $150 utilities (electricity, water, Wi-Fi, phone bill, etc.) + $125 groceries (cheaper for me since I get free food at the place I work part-time on campus).

  • Difficulty is course-dependent. There are courses with practically 0 workload, and courses which are the hardest take 30hours a week.
  • The curriculum was very practical. The positive aspects are that I got to do a lot of projects, and these had solid test cases designed so that we can reflect on our mistakes and fix our coding mistakes.

Fees

  • It is credit based and 10+ credit means same fees for all. For all masters student the fee structure is 20k USD per semester excluding housing. There are no other charges. Insurance isn't mandatory.
  • The fee was semester wise, and in last semester it was 7k USD. Monthly expenses around 700 USD if private else 500 if shared inclusive of food, water electricity, rent. Free transportation.

  • The academics in my course are a mix of theoretical and practical learning. Around 60% of the grading is based on projects and assignments, while the remaining 40% comes from exams. The exams can vary in format: some are open-book, others allow a single cheat sheet, and some professors permit the use of online tools, including LLMs (language models). Generally, the more tools allowed, the higher the difficulty of the exam.
  • In the first year, adapting to the self-study-orientated teaching style takes some time. Professors provide the concepts and guidance, but most of the learning requires independent effort.
  • For each subject, there are typically two classes per week, with each class lasting 75 minutes. The weekly schedule depends on the subjects you choose.
  • In Computer Science and Computer Engineering, about 30% of the students are Indian. Across the university, the student strength is approximately 35,000, with around 1,500–2,000 Indian students. Indian cultural events often see 500–700 attendees.
  • The most positive aspect of the course is the hands-on learning through projects. However, the self-study focus and challenging curriculum can be a bit overwhelming initially.

Fees

  • The fee structure for my course is as follows:
  • The tuition fee is $20,500 per semester for 9 credits.
  • For the first three semesters, I take 9 credits each, paying $20,500 per semester.
  • In the final semester, I only need 3 credits, which costs around $7,000.
  • The total course requires 31 credits, bringing the total cost to approximately $70,000.
  • Fees are charged semester-wise, based on the number of credits taken in that semester.
  • Monthly Expenses:
    • Rent and utilities: I pay $600, which includes electricity, water, Wi-Fi, and other bills.
    • Groceries and food: Around $200.
    • Other expenses (mobile bill, miscellaneous): Around $100.
    • In total, my monthly expenses are approximately $900–$1,000, depending on spending habits.

Fees

There are many factors involved in the fees, and depending on whether you graduate in 3 semesters on 4, it'll change. As a non-resident, if you graduate in 3 semesters, the tuition fees would be around 59k USD. For 4 semesters, it'd be around 65.2k USD. This is only tuition fee, living expenses are on top of this. The fees gets updated every year, this is for 2023 academic year.
