Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- I chose UofM Dearborn for my MSE in Computer Engineering due to its strong emphasis on practical learning, research opportunities, and industrial collaboration.
- The program's focus on advanced topics such as machine learning, IoT, and embedded systems aligns perfectly with my career aspirations in cutting-edge technology fields.
- Moreover, the university's proximity to a thriving hub of automotive and technology industries offers unparalleled opportunities for internships, networking and real-world experience.
- The faculty's expertise and the availability of state-of-the-art facilities further solidified my decision, as I believe this environment will help me grow both academically and professionally.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
With the California State University at Long Beach, I guess I was late. Although it had rolling admissions, it was based on a first-come, first-serve basis because someone I know got admission just because they applied earlier and we had the same profile. For the other Universities, I am not sure what the issue was, but I didn't have the GRE, and that might be the reason.

Tips to enhance your application
To increase the chances of acceptance, ensure your CV, SOP & LOR are tailored and impactful. The CV should highlight your relevant skills and projects, and if you have volunteered in any non-profit organization or NGO, you must add details about it as it increases your chances. Moreover, try to work on more and more projects or research related to your field which you can add to your CV. Make sure you quantify your pointers in your CV. In your SOP, focus on your motivation for the particular field you are willing to pursue your program. For your LOR, choose recommenders who know your work well and can speak specifically about your skills achievements and potential for success in graduate studies, ensuring each letter provides unique insights about you.
Admission Experience
I chose the US as it is a leading country in the world for the field of computing. I particularly chose the University of Michigan, Dearborn, due to its strong academic reputation, specialised courses in the field, and its location near Detroit, which is a hub for the tech and automotive industries.
Class Schedule
You have 3 classes a week, each is 3 hours long, but it all depends on the program you take. I am particularly talking about the graduate program. Now it also depends on the coursework you take. Some coursework offers 2 classes a week but each would be 1hr 45min in duration.
Faculty
Faculty-to-student ratio depends on the courses you take, but the faculties are very approachable. I particularly liked Dr Yi Lu Murphy as she was extremely knowledgeable, and no doubt she is one of the top 2% of scientists in the World.
Campus Life
- There are always some or other events happening on the campus by one or the other club, and I would say if you attend all of them, then you should forget about your studies.
- They celebrate every major festival on campus from different countries and cultures. The library is amazing, and I used to study a lot over there. You have a gym, pickleball, ice skating ring, soccer, and football field if you are interested. You can go on hikes as well, which are very beautiful.
Part Time Jobs
The average hourly wage on campus is $15/hour. The least I have heard is $14 at the cafe, and the minimum wage at other places all over the campus is $15. Some professors do pay more than $15/hour to students, but it is not uniform.
There are plenty of opportunities available. I worked at a cafe and then as an RA under a professor. The compensation is pretty good and you can work wherever you want depending upon your liking and interest.
Placement
A full-time job depends on your abilities and does not depend on your college. They do have career fairs and really good companies do come at the career fairs but everything dependent on your abilities.
Accommodation
For Indian students, you can connect to the Indian Graduate Student Association (IGSA) to get off-campus accommodation which is cheaper than the Union (on-campus accommodation). You can connect with them through Facebook. If you want to stay at the Union, you can go to the website and do what is needed.
