What Students Say
Likes
- Small college - smaller class with fewer students helps prof give more attention to you.
Dislikes
- Michigan's climate can sometimes be extreme
I have a UG background in Mech Engg. and I chose to go ahead with a Masters in Engineering Management course since I did not want to get into a very technical field hence I chose the University of Michigan since it has a good blend of mechanical and business courses without a very technical or Computer science courses. The fees is affordable and they also give a scholarship. The housing and accommodations are also affordable compared to other cities in the US. Texas also is a good option but the summer gets really bad there. University of Michigan Dearborn is a sub-university to the main campus in Ann Arbor which is a highly reputed and expensive university but Dearborn is also a good one in terms of education. There might not be a lot to do outside of academic terms but it's a good place to be. Career-wise - the students have to build their skills and apply for jobs on their own.
Course Curriculum
The course structures are pretty good. It covers almost everything needed for industrial knowledge. The rest depends on the extra effort the students take to understand better.
Faculty
Faculties will help in getting Teaching assistantships and research assistant jobs on campus. Students cannot work outside of campus - it's illegal. Otherwise, the faculty is always ready to guide and advise on any aspects and can also help refer to companies.
Campus Life
There are several activities and sports offered when the weather is favourable. The library is open till 10 pm. There are Fall and winter fests, and technical academic clubs to join. Medical is a little difficult in the US as appointments are given for weeks later and the cost is too much.
Placement
There's no placement process in US institutions. The student is responsible for it and has to apply to jobs of their interests. There are career fairs on campus where various companies of all interests pitch their business and the students get an opportunity to talk to them and discuss their future and career.
Accommodation
Usually, students share an apartment - 4 or 5 in a 2bhk. It depends on the student and their personal budget. Electricity and Wi-Fi are separate. It costs around 500$ per person in Michigan in this case. And groceries separate.
Exams
- Score TOEFL - 98/120, no other exams were given. - Grades in 10th - 86 %; Grade in 12th - 78 %; UG - 7.6 - Requirements: Yes, an SOP had to be submitted and 2 LORs from the previous university or workplace. Your SOP has to be about your interests, how the degree would align with your future goals, any experience and why this university would be a good choice.
Fees
The fees keep changing so it'll be better to go to the particular university's website for info. But initially while applying for applications look for discount codes or reach out to the university email to waive the application fee which ranges from 60- 90$.
