Cornell University Application Deadlines 2026-2027
Cornell University runs a single-cycle Fall intake for undergraduates, split into Early Decision and Regular Decision, per the Cornell first-year international applicants page. Graduate fields set their own deadlines within a December to February window for Fall entry, and Johnson runs a rounds-based MBA calendar. Undergraduate applicants use the Common Application, and graduate applicants use Cornell’s Graduate School portal.
Cornell’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August entry) — most undergraduate, graduate, MBA, and PhD programs open here.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Undergraduate, Early Decision | August 2026 | 1 November 2026 | $85 (₹8,109) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Undergraduate, Regular Decision | August 2026 | 2 January 2027 | $85 (₹8,109) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Graduate Master’s and PhD (typical field window) | September 2026 | December 2026 to February 2027 (field specific) | $105 (₹10,017) | Cornell Graduate School portal |
| Fall 2027 | Johnson Two-Year MBA, Round 1 | Open | 17 September 2026 | $200 (₹19,080) | Johnson MBA portal |
| Fall 2027 | Johnson Two-Year MBA, Round 2 | Open | 5 January 2027 | $200 (₹19,080) | Johnson MBA portal |
| Fall 2027 | Johnson Two-Year MBA, Round 3 | Open | 6 April 2027 | $200 (₹19,080) | Johnson MBA portal |
Insider note: Indian undergraduate applicants who lock a top-choice college by 1 November 2026 through Early Decision get a decision by mid-December 2026 and historically see materially higher admit rates than the January round.
Cornell University Eligibility for Indian Students
Cornell sets separate academic and English thresholds for undergraduate and graduate entry. Undergraduate eligibility is anchored to Class XII (CBSE, ISC, or state board), while graduate eligibility looks at your Indian Bachelor’s degree, subject preparation, and prior research or internship exposure. The English requirement is set centrally by the Graduate School for master’s and PhD, and by Undergraduate Admissions for first-year applicants.
Cornell UG Eligibility for Indian Class XII Students
- Class XII performance: most admitted Indian applicants score around 90 to 95 percent in the four best academic subjects.
- Subject preparation: aligned to your intended college. Engineering needs Mathematics and one lab science studied through Class XII.
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 5.0, Duolingo English Test 130, or Cambridge C1 or C2 at 191.
- Standardised tests: SAT and ACT are optional for the 2027 cycle, but strong scores strengthen a competitive file.
Cornell PG Eligibility for Indian Bachelor Holders
- Bachelor’s degree: four-year Indian Bachelor in a related field with a strong first class, typically 8.0 CGPA on 10 or 75 percent plus.
- Three-year Bachelor: most fields require the international equivalent of a US four-year Bachelor, so a three-year BA or BCom applicant should plan on a Master’s or PG Diploma to qualify.
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall or TOEFL iBT with Speaking 22 plus, Reading 20 plus, Listening 15 plus, Writing 20 plus (pre-January 2026 scoring).
- Standardised tests: GRE is required, recommended, or optional depending on the field. Check the specific field page before applying.
Cornell IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Cornell’s Graduate School lists India as an English-official country. Indian applicants who hold the international equivalent of a US Bachelor’s degree from an Indian institution where the language of instruction is English qualify for a standing waiver of the TOEFL and IELTS requirement, per the Graduate School English Language Proficiency page. Research degree applicants using the waiver still need to clear an English Language Assessment on campus before any Teaching Assistantship is approved.

Planning note: Research master’s and PhD applicants at Cornell are usually funded by the field, so tuition is not the number Indian applicants should optimise around; the assistantship offer is.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Cornell Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.
Cornell University UG Programs and Requirements

Two-Year MBA tuition for 2026-2027 is $88,934 (₹84.84 Lakhs) per year, with total two-year program cost around $177,868 (₹169.68 Lakhs) before living costs. For funding routes see funding options for Indian students.
Cornell Johnson MBA Rounds and Deadlines
- Round 1: 17 September 2026 — best for Indian applicants targeting maximum scholarship consideration.
- Round 2: 5 January 2027 — the standard round for most international candidates.
- Round 3: 6 April 2027 — competitive for international applicants because of F-1 visa timelines.
Cornell MBA Test and Experience Requirements
- GMAT or GRE: both accepted, no minimum posted; strong candidates cluster around GMAT 700 plus.
- English proficiency: IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100. Indian applicants with an English-medium Bachelor qualify for the standing waiver.
- Work experience: average admitted class carries around 5 years of full-time post-Bachelor experience; there is no formal minimum for the Two-Year MBA.
- Interview: shortlisted candidates receive an invite-only admissions interview, conducted by video for international applicants.
Note: Round-specific deadlines, application fee, and scholarship consideration windows may shift between announcement and application close. Always confirm on the official Johnson Full-Time MBA page for your target round before applying.
Cornell University PhD Admissions
Cornell PhD admission is by field, not by department. Indian applicants apply through the Cornell Graduate School portal, name a field like Computer Science or Applied Economics and Management, and are reviewed by faculty in that field. PhD tuition for 2026-2027 is $20,800 (₹19.84 Lakhs) per year, though almost all admitted PhD students receive a full tuition waiver plus a stipend through a research or teaching assistantship.
Cornell PhD Deadlines and Funding
- Application window: most fields open in September 2026 and close between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry.
- Funding: 99% of Cornell PhD students are fully funded through a package that covers tuition, health insurance, and a monthly stipend.
- Stipend basis: stipend levels are set at the field level and revised each academic year; Indian applicants should confirm the current 2026-2027 stipend on the field’s funding page before accepting.
Cornell PhD Application Requirements
- Academic Statement of Purpose aligned to a specific research area and named faculty.
- Personal Statement covering background, goals, and fit with Cornell’s research community.
- Three letters of recommendation, ideally from research supervisors or thesis advisors.
- GRE: required, recommended, or optional depending on the field. Confirm on the field page.
Insider note: Reach out to two or three prospective advisors in your target Cornell field around September or October 2026 to test research fit before submitting; a warm faculty read materially strengthens shortlisting.
Cornell University Application Process Step by Step
Cornell’s process differs by level. Undergraduates apply through the Common Application, and graduate applicants apply through the Cornell Graduate School’s Apply Now portal. Both routes are entirely online for Indian applicants, with no in-person requirement before an offer.
- Pick your college or field: For UG, choose one of seven undergraduate colleges; for PG, choose a specific field.
- Create your application account: UG applicants set up a Common Application account, graduate applicants set up a Cornell Graduate School applicant profile.
- Draft your essays: Cornell requires college-specific Writing Supplements for UG and both an Academic Statement of Purpose and a Personal Statement for PG.
- Request recommendation letters: 2 teacher evaluations plus counsellor report for UG; 3 letters for PG.
- Upload transcripts and test scores: Upload attested Class XII (UG) or Bachelor’s transcripts (PG), plus IELTS or TOEFL where required.
- Pay the application fee: UG applicants pay $85 (₹8,109) on the Common Application; PG applicants pay $105 (₹10,017) on the Cornell Graduate School portal.
- Submit before the round deadline: Confirm submission and save the applicant ID for status tracking.
- Track your admission decision: UG Early Decision releases mid-December 2026, Regular Decision at end of March 2027, and graduate decisions arrive on rolling field timelines from January to April 2027.
Once an offer arrives, the acceptance deadline is typically two to four weeks. Deferrals to the next Fall intake are considered case by case, and every deferral request must be submitted in writing to the admitting office.
Cornell University Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Documents are uploaded within the online application. Original hard copies are not needed at the application stage, but Cornell will ask for official transcripts and score reports after you accept an offer. Keep certified PDF scans ready before opening the portal.
- Valid Indian passport with at least one year of validity beyond your planned arrival.
- Class XII marksheet and predicted grades (UG) or Bachelor’s transcripts and consolidated marksheet (PG).
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate if the Bachelor is complete.
- Academic Statement of Purpose (PG) or Cornell Writing Supplement (UG).
- Personal Statement for graduate applicants.
- Two teacher evaluations plus counsellor report for UG; three letters of recommendation for PG.
- Updated CV or resume covering academics, research, internships, and awards.
- Financial documentation including CSS Profile for UG financial aid and Certification of Finances for graduate applicants.
- English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or Cambridge) where the waiver does not apply.
- Portfolio for AAP and design programs, or supplementary work samples where the field requests them.

Cornell University Acceptance Rate
Cornell’s most recent published overall undergraduate acceptance rate was 8.38%, with 6,077 offers made from 72,523 applications. That is the highest admit rate in the Ivy League, mostly because Cornell admits the largest first-year class of any Ivy. It is still deeply selective for the international pool, and Indian applicants compete inside that pool. Cornell’s global standing is reflected in its ranking band across QS, THE, and ARWU.
Cornell Early Decision vs Regular Decision Admit Rates
Early Decision admits carried an admit rate of 18.78% for the most recent cycle, versus 6.70% for Regular Decision. Indian applicants who are certain about Cornell as a first choice see a meaningful lift by applying ED, though ED is binding and financial aid comparisons are limited.
Cornell Graduate Acceptance Rates for Indian Applicants
Graduate admit rates vary sharply by field. Research MS and PhD fields in Computer Science and ORIE remain among the most competitive because of high Indian applicant volume, while professional master’s like MPS and MEng admit at higher rates provided academic and English thresholds are cleared.
Insider note: ED admits at Cornell include recruited athletes and legacy applicants, so the 18.78% headline overstates the odds for a first-generation Indian applicant with no institutional tie; treat the RD rate as the honest benchmark.
USA Student Visa for Cornell University Applicants
Indian students admitted to Cornell need an F-1 student visa to enter the United States. After you accept a Cornell offer and Cornell issues the Form I-20 through International Services, you pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,390), pay the DS-160 machine-readable visa application fee of $185 (₹17,649), and book an F-1 interview at a US Consulate in India. Bring the Form I-20, proof of admission, financial documents covering the first year, passport, DS-160 confirmation, and SEVIS receipt to the interview.
Financial proof is central for F-1 approval. Cornell will list the first-year cost of attendance on your Form I-20, and you should carry evidence of liquid funds and, where relevant, education loan sanction letters that clearly cover tuition and one year of living costs. Post-arrival, F-1 students at Cornell register with International Services during orientation and maintain full-time enrolment across the semester.
Planning note: F-1 visa slots at Indian consulates tighten between May and August as US-bound students book back to back; aim to book your Cornell F-1 slot within two weeks of receiving the Form I-20 to protect your August arrival.

Tips for Cornell University Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Cornell University over recent Fall cycles.
- Pick your college with intent. Cornell reads UG files at the college level, so a strong Engineering profile applying to CALS reads as mis-fit.
- Use ED strategically. ED helps only if Cornell is your unambiguous first choice and your family can commit without a full aid comparison.
- Line up letters early. Indian school teachers and college professors often need a month plus to write nuanced letters that read well to a US committee.
- Claim the IELTS waiver correctly. Ask your Indian institution for a medium-of-instruction letter on letterhead before you apply, or the graduate office may still request scores.
- Match your Statement of Purpose to a field. Cornell PhD reviewers want to see faculty names and a research thread; a generic essay is quickly filtered out.
- Budget for the CSS Profile. UG financial aid decisions rest on the CSS Profile, and skipping it means you are read as a full-pay applicant regardless of your actual need.
- Prepare for the Johnson interview. MBA interviews are invite-only, so treat the essay and resume as the shortlist filter and the interview as the differentiator.

Cornell University Admissions Checklist
The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete before a Cornell round closes.
- 12 weeks before deadline: shortlist your Cornell college or graduate field and lock the specific round you will apply in.
- 10 weeks before deadline: book your IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, or GMAT slot, or confirm the medium-of-instruction waiver route with your institution.
- 8 weeks before deadline: request official transcripts from your school or university and Class XII predicted grades from your counsellor.
- 6 weeks before deadline: send recommender briefs plus your latest CV to each recommender, with the exact Cornell submission link.
- 4 weeks before deadline: finish first drafts of the Common App or Cornell Graduate School statements and share for external review.
- 2 weeks before deadline: upload documents to the portal, run a final proof of essays, and confirm your recommenders have submitted.
- 3 days before deadline: pay the application fee, submit the application, save the confirmation PDF, and note the applicant ID.
Cornell University admissions reward Indian applicants who match a specific college or field, clear the English and academic thresholds cleanly, and file by the earliest live round they can. Stack ED or Round 1 with a strong Statement of Purpose and confirmed IELTS waiver route, and treat the financial aid file as part of the application, not an afterthought.

- I didn't receive any scholarship but my friends received a scholarship (TATA Scholarship), which is about 95% scholarship based mostly on merit but I'm not too sure of the details. Not a lot of people in the university receive scholarships, especially international students. I am not aware of the exact number of students, though, as that isn't revealed to us.

Prestige and ranking(overall and department). It is an Ivy school and ranked in the top 10 in the US for my program.
Scholarship
No, I didn't receive any scholarship.
Overview
I ended up choosing Cornell mainly due to two Professors here (Jie Shan and Peter McMahon). Their research interests aligned really well with mine. Another, although minor, factor that affected my decision was the availability of many hiking trails in Ithaca. I really enjoy trekking and hiking, so that was a major plus.
Scholarship
I applied for a few after joining my Ph.D program, although their results haven't been released yet.
Overview
A great network to be able to be successful in the future, allows me to extensively train for the career I want. Has a good social climate to be able to enjoy myself when I need a break from the tough work.
Overview
It's the leading program in this field and I couldn't find it anywhere else. Very detailed and good instruction at Cornell's ILR School in Ithaca, NY about 4 hours from New York City. There are plenty of resources.
Scholarship
I have some financial aid to make education more affordable. This would be difficult without financial aid. They are good about aid but the process includes filling out lots of paperwork.
