IIM Visakhapatnam MBA Selection Criteria

IIM Visakhapatnam uses three stage admission process, i.e. Initial Shortlisting based on CAT scores, personal interview, and final merit list.

Phase 1: The first shortlist of candidates is based on candidates securing minimum section-wise and aggregate percentile scores in the CAT 2024. Candidates obtaining a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT 2024 will only be considered. The following table shows the minimum cutoff required in CAT 2024-

All candidates in the first shortlist (i.e. those who have selected IIM Visakhapatnam as one of their preferences in the CAT 2024 Registration form and also meet the minimum CAT 2024 percentile requirements given in Table above) would be receiving an email from IIM Visakhapatnam by the third week of January 2025. The email consists of a link to a web page where they MUST apply for admission to PGP at IIM Visakhapatnam.

Phase 2: For all Qualified Confirmed Candidates, the weighted aggregate of the six components, namely (a) CAT; (b) 10th Board; (c) 12th Board; (d) Bachelor’s; (e) Gender Diversity; (f) Work experience or professional course, is used to prepare a pre-PI rank list based on which a second shortlist of candidates is prepared, for an assessment through Personal Interview.

Candidates should note that those who are shortlisted for the Personal Interview (PI) by any of the IIMs*—Bangalore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Indore (applicable only for their PGP/PGPM programs), will not be required to attend a separate Personal Interview at IIM Visakhapatnam.

Candidates who are not shortlisted by any of the IIMs at Bangalore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Indore (only for their PGP/PGPM programs) will be required to appear for a personal interview of IIM Visakhapatnam.

IIM Visakhapatnam Executive MBA Admission 2026

IIM Vizag offers an Executive MBA program with a duration of 2 years for candidates who have passed bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks and have work experience of at least 3 years. This program is only for Indian nationals residing in India.

IIM Vizag Executive MBA Selection & Admission Process

There are three stages to the selection process for admission to the EMBA program 2025-2027.

Phase 1: Shortlisting of candidates based on the eligibility criteria.

The candidates will be shortlisted for the selection process based on the information provided in the online application form and supporting documents uploaded. The candidates meeting the eligibility criteria will be called for Phase 2.

Phase 2: Executive Management Aptitude Test (EMAT) & Personal Interview.

In this stage, a candidate would need to appear for an Executive Management Aptitude Test (EMAT)*.

Appearing for EMAT/CAT/GRE/GMAT is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to be eligible for the Personal Interview (PI) round. Phase 3: Offer Letter Phase.

Admission to the program is based on the composite score of performance in the EMAT and Personal Interview. The final composite score will be created based on 47.5% weight to EMAT score, 47.5% weight to PI and 5% will be awarded to Female and Transgender.

IIM Vizag offers a one-year Executive Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Management (EPGDPM) program is speciﬁcally crafted for the oﬃcers and executives in the defence production sector. The program is offered in hybrid mode.

The MBA course required the candidate to write the CAT exam which is conducted yearly in November. The result is declared in the first month of Januaryhe couse requires a cutoff marks of above 90 percentile for General category students for getting the shortlist at the institute. Once the cut off criteria has been cleared there are 2 processes in-line for the shortlisted candidate, GD and PR. These have been made convinient post COVID wherein the Institue provides the option for both Online as well as Offline mode, preferences are filled in by the candidate but the decision is with the Institute in question. The process is pretty straight forward and well elicited in the follow up mails, received over the official mail id. There s generally a pre process talk and then the candidates are divided into grops for further process. My personal experience was quite positive.

I sat for other entrance exams as well besides writing the CAT. I applied for SNAP and IIFT later on once I had written CAT. Speaking on CAT, i.e. Common Admission Test requires any candidate to be either in their final year of graduation or is a passout with a minimum graduation score of 60% was the eligibility. On that particular portal, the registration was opened in the first week of Aug till Sep end. Then, it will generate a Register ID for you for further access. In the CAT form, there were multiple sections asking for your personal/background details, Educational, Employment (if any), and preferred IIMs with a fee of Rs2500. The CAT exam was conducted in November end with medium to high-level difficulty across all sections. After CAT, I took SNAP (1hr exam with Rs 2250 excluding college ) which is easier but tests your speed and IIFT (3hrs) which was relatively lengthy.

So, to get admission to the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, you have first to clear the Common Admission Test exam, which is conducted once a year based on your percentile in the CAT exam, the shortlisted candidates will have to undergo a Personal Interview round and based on the cumulative scores, students are shortlisted for admission. The CAT exam is a multiple choice exam with moderate difficulty level and it has three sections namely Quantitive aptitude, Verbal ability, reading comprehension and data interpretation, and logical reasoning. After clearing the set cutoff of IIMV, which is 80, 72,72,45,35 (only for shortlisting of Phase 1, the final cutoff will be high) for UR, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, calls for PI round will be sent to students in Jan to Feb and in March PI process will take place, and after that based on the cumulative scores candidates are selected in May to June. IIM Visakhapatnam is one of the newest IIMs and lacks credibility to a great extent. The State and Central governments might be trying to make this a good institution but I don’t think it’s capable of offering a plethora of opportunities in terms of placements, exposure, peer learning, or faculty. I will suggest you go for a different IIM if you have any other option up to your sleeve. Even a new IIM that has just been established for a year or two is better. Make sure its infrastructure, placements, and faculty are at par with the IIM standards. It’s too early to claim with surety of IIM Visakhapatnam’s worth. Moreover, if you were able to crack CAT this year, it’s better you try again next year with a bit more determination and target a better B School.

What should I join, SIBM Pune or IIM Visakhapatnam?

Don’t go for IIM Visakhapatnam if you are just attracted by the IIM tag. While it surely is part of the IIM family that does not necessarily mean it has the same standards. Between the two, SIBM Pune gives a slight edge to IIM Visakhapatnam. If you talk about them generally they definitely are good institutions, but they are not the best. IIM Visakhapatnam is not yet recognised at SIBM Pune.

But if your preference is staying in your hometown or other location factors and IIM Visakhapatnam is suitable for you, then go for it. Both are almost similar in terms of worth and academics. At the end of the day it’s not the institution but your own performance that matters.

Consider your goals. IIM Viskhapatnam offers a strong ROI with an average salary of ?16+ lakhs and fees around ?17.8 lakhs. Placements are excellent (100%), but the brand might not match older IIMs yet. If a well-established name is crucial, wait another year. If a quality program with good returns is your priority, IIM Viskhapatnam could be a great fit.
