Madras University M.Phil Admission Criteria

The University of Madras accepts students for the MPhil program through an entrance exam conducted at the level of the Individual University department/ College. 

The University's department is allowed to conduct MPhil Program on an annual basis and admission is provided on the basis of the number of Research Supervisor and other academic physical facilities available.

Madras University M.Phil Selection Criteria

Admission to MPhil will be provided through two stages:

  • An entrance examination is qualifying in nature and students must secure 50% marks. The syllabus of the entrance exam consists of 50% of research methodology and 50% will be specific subject-oriented.
  • Interview/ Viva-voce organized by University's department/ colleges and students are required to discuss their research area through a presentation in front of the Department Research Committee.

The interview will evaluate candidates on the following parameters:

  • Competence for the Proposed Research
  • If the research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution/ College
  • If proposed research can contribute to new/additional knowledge

Madras University M.Phil Course Details

The MPhil program at the University of Madras evaluates the course through credit points.

  • Coursework of MPhil has a minimum of 8 credits and a maximum of 16 credits
  • Coursework is a prerequisite for MPhil preparation
  • Minimum of four credits will be assigned on Research Methodology.
  • Research Methodology will cover the topic areas such as quantitative methods, computer applications, research ethics, etc.
  • All candidates admitted to MPhil Program are required to complete the coursework during the initial one or two semesters.
  • MPhil scholars have to obtain a minimum of 55% of aggregate marks or its equivalent in UGC point scale 7 in the coursework to further be eligible to continue in the program and submit the dissertation or thesis.
  • Students who fail the coursework examination will be given a second chance by the department and the examination will be held again in two months from the publication of the results. Those who fail even in the retake exam, will not be eligible to continue the program and submit the thesis.

Madras University M.Phil Evaluation

  • The overall minimum credit requirements for completion of the MPhil program at the University of Madras including credit for coursework shall not be less than 24 credits.
  • After the completion of Course work, students will be required to undertake research work and produce a draft dissertation/ thesis within a specific time.
  • Prior to submission of the thesis, scholars must do a presentation before the Research Advisory Committee.
  • The scholars must present at least one research paper in a conference or seminar before the submission of the thesis.
  • The last date to submit the thesis is August 31 of every year without penalty. Those who fail to submit the thesis within the stipulated time will be given an extension of two months with a penalty fee prescribed by the University.

Ques. What is the maximum duration of an MPhil at Madras University?

Ans. MPhil Program at the Madras University will be a minimum of two consecutive semesters, i.e. one year, and a maximum of four consecutive semesters, which is two years. Hence, students must complete the MPhil program within three years including (Coursework and dissertation/ thesis submission).

Ques. Is there any relaxation provided to reserved category in completion of MPhil at Madras University?

Ans. Yes. Women candidates and a person with a Disability (more than 40%) are provided relaxation of one year for MPhil. Also, women candidates are given Maternity Leave/ Child Care Leave once in the program duration for up to 240 days.

Ques. Does Madras University offer MPhil in distance mode?

Ans. No. Madras University does not provide MPhil Program in the distance mode. One can pursue MPhil in regular mode only at the University of Madras.

Ans. MPhil scholars at Madras University who have missed the chance to clear the MPhil examination can appear for first semester arrear papers and second-semester dissertation submission. However, a penal fee of INR 12000/- and a redo fee of INR 500 along with the prescribed examination fee will be charged.
