Madras University offers admission to its majority of its programs based on the scores in the entrance exam conducted by the university itself. Important information regarding the application process and admission is given below-
- Application for admission should be filled in online on the University website at University of Madras only.
- The payment for the cost of the application (INR 354) should be made through ONLINE ONLY by State Bank Collect [SB COLLECT], and the receipt of payment shall be forwarded along with other testimonials; otherwise, the application will be summarily rejected.
- The SC/ST/SCA/SCC [SC converted Christian] candidates of Tamil Nadu alone are eligible to avail only one application at free of cost. A copy of the Community Certificate [Photograph with Digital Certificate], duly self-attested, shall be emailed to the respective department along with other testimonials to avail this concession.
- Separate application forms at a cost of Rs.354 shall be submitted through email and also by post directly to the concern department for each program (including regular and self-supportive programmes) offered by the different Departments.
- The fee structure of the Self-Finance Program is higher than the Regular Program.
Applications cannot be transferred from one department to another department under any circumstances.
- Foreign Nationals, including NRIs with valid passports and visas issued by the Government of India, and Refugees will be considered for admission, subject to the conditions prescribed by the Government, eligibility for schooling, and qualifying examinations passed.
- Foreign Nations, including NRIs, are exempted from appearing Entrance Examination.
- 15 percent supernumerary seats are available in all the PG Programs for Foreign Nationals, including NRIs.
- Two supernumerary seats are available for students from Jammu & Kashmir in all the departments.
- Application submitted through online shall be printed and the scanned soft copy emailed to respective departments and also sent the hard copy directly to the Head of the concern Department along with duly self-attested proof for the payment of application cost and copies of necessary certificates with documents (SSLC and HSC certificates, Community Certificate if claimed, Transfer certificate (TC), Statement of Marks, Provisional/Degree certificate, Aadhaar card, Proof for any concession claimed etc. duly self-attested) on or before (P.G, P.G Diploma, Diploma and Certificate Courses:) 07.07.2025.
- Duly self-attested scanned copies of the remaining mark statements if any (i.e. 6th semesters for 3 year course and 8th semesters for 4 year course) should be sent to the concern department and also by post (as it was done previously) within 7 days after the publication of the results of final semester for U.G examinations.
- The candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from other Universities shall obtain the Eligibility Certificate from the University of Madras either online or in person and submit the same to the Department at the time of admission to the course of study.
- Admissions to PG. Degree Programs are based on the marks obtained in the basic qualifying examination (100 percent). The percentage of marks shall be calculated based on the marks obtained in both elective and core courses in the University of Madras examinations, and only the marks of core courses for other Universities.
- In certain PG Programmes where multiple streams of students are eligible, the basic qualifying examination (50 percent) and entrance examination (50 percent) will be taken into account.
- Candidates from other states (except SC/ST) will be considered for selection under the General Category only.
- Differently abled persons shall forward a self-attested copy of the certificate issued by the Department of Rehabilitation, Government of Tamil Nadu, in proof of evidence through the concerned department's email ID and also by post.
- Candidates who have completed a Postgraduate Program at any of the University Departments will be eligible to apply for another PG Program, provided,
a) The candidate has no backlogs in the previous Postgraduate Program.
b) The Candidate should not have violated the “University of Madras Students' Conduct Rules”, and
c) The candidate should submit a recommendation letter from the Head of the Department where he/she had undergone the Postgraduate Program.

First you have to login using Email ID and Mobile number on the official website of Madras University. Then you need to fill in the applciation form of re admission. Upload all the required documents and scanned copies.
The University of Madras has uploaded the guidelines on how to register, fill up and submit your Ph.D applicaiton form on its official website. Once you have filled up your application form, you will be redirected to the payment page. Without making the payment your registration status will remain incomplete.
The university has not released the dates for the admission entrance tests. The university has extended the registration process till 31 July 2022. The new entrance examination date will be released shortly. However, admission to M.Sc courses is based on the merit of the qualifying examination passed.
