NIT Warangal Ph.D. (MEMS) FAQs
Ques. Is GATE mandatory for Ph.D. admission in Metallurgical Engineering at NIT Warangal?
Ans. No, GATE is not mandatory for Ph.D. admission at NIT Warangal. However, having a valid GATE score gives you a significant advantage - candidates with GATE qualification are directly called for an interview and are exempted from the written test. Candidates without GATE must first clear a written test based on the GATE syllabus for the department, followed by an interview. So while GATE is not compulsory, it simplifies the selection process considerably.
Ques. Can a candidate with an M.Sc. background (not engineering) apply for the Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science at NIT Warangal?
Ans. Yes, candidates with an M.Sc. background can apply, provided they have the right specialisation. NIT Warangal specifically accepts M.Sc. graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Electronics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Ceramic Engineering, or Surface Engineering - either directly or with an M.Tech. in a relevant area. This makes the programme accessible to science graduates with strong materials science backgrounds, not just engineering graduates.
Ques. What is the monthly stipend for a Ph.D. scholar at NIT Warangal under the Institute Fellowship?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars admitted under the Institute Fellowship category receive Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years and Rs. 42,000 per month from the third year onwards (up to the fifth year). This fellowship is as per Ministry of Education, Government of India guidelines and is subject to revision. Note that part-time, sponsored, self-finance, and external category candidates are not eligible for this fellowship.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for Ph.D. scholars at NIT Warangal?
Ans. NIT Warangal is a fully residential institute, and all full-time research scholars admitted under the Institute Fellowship are required to stay on campus. Accommodation for unmarried research scholars is provided within the institute premises. However, accommodation for married research scholars is currently not available, and there is no provision for House Rent Allowance (HRA) either. Scholars under the Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme who are not provided hostel accommodation can claim rent reimbursement as per Government of India norms.
Ques. What are the research areas available in the MME department at NIT Warangal for Ph.D.?
