NITW Ph.D. FAQs

Ques. Is CAT or GATE score mandatory for Ph.D. (Management) admission at NIT Warangal?

Ans. No, CAT/GATE/UGC-NET/GMAT/GRE/CSIR NET qualification is not mandatory for admission to the Ph.D. (Management) programme at NIT Warangal. All candidates must appear for an interview. However, candidates who hold a valid CAT/GATE/NET/GMAT score are exempted from the written test and are directly called for an interview. Candidates without any of these qualifications must appear for a written test (based on management/GATE syllabus) followed by an interview. Having a qualifying score in these exams does give candidates an advantage in the selection process, as it demonstrates academic aptitude.

Scholars must fulfil all Ph.D. programme requirements, including coursework completion and timely submission of progress reports, to continue receiving the fellowship. Ques. Can a working professional apply for the full-time Ph.D. (Management) programme at NIT Warangal?

Ans. Yes, working professionals can apply for the full-time Ph.D. (Management) programme, but they must be fully relieved from their current employment before joining. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer (issued on or after March 27, 2026) and a relieving certificate must be submitted at the time of admission. Alternatively, working professionals who cannot take a full leave of absence may apply for the Part-Time Ph.D. programme, which allows them to continue their employment while pursuing research. Part-time candidates must be permanently employed and submit an NOC from their employer; they are not eligible for the Institute Fellowship.

Ques. What is the difference between the regular Full-Time Ph.D. and the Executive Ph.D. at NIT Warangal?

Ans. The regular Full-Time Ph.D. requires candidates to be physically present on campus and complete a minimum residential requirement. It is available under Institute Fellowship, other government fellowships, and Self-Finance categories. The Executive Ph.D. is specifically designed for working professionals and M.Tech graduates of NIT Warangal. Executive Ph.D. scholars are exempted from the minimum residential requirement, making it more flexible for those who cannot relocate to Warangal. The fee structure is different: Executive Ph.D. has an enrolment fee of Rs. 2,00,000 at admission and Rs. 1,50,000 per semester from the second semester onwards. No minimum work experience is required for the Executive Ph.D. Scholars must complete 4 online certifications (such as NPTEL) as recommended by the DSC within one year of joining.

Ph.D. scholars are required to publish their research in reputed SCI/Scopus-indexed journals before submitting their thesis. Scholars are also expected to present their work at national and international conferences. NIT Warangal's strong research culture, access to funded projects, and collaborations with industry and national laboratories help scholars complete their research within the stipulated timeframe.
