NITW B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the regular B.Tech Chemical Engineering and the B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree at NIT Warangal?
Ans. The regular B.Tech Chemical Engineering is a 4-year programme with 97 seats, while the Dual Degree is a 5-year integrated programme with only 12 seats that awards both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees simultaneously. The Dual Degree saves one year compared to doing B.Tech (4 years) and M.Tech (2 years) separately. In the Dual Degree, the first 3 years cover B.Tech-level coursework, the 4th year is a transition phase, and the 5th year is dedicated to M.Tech-level research and thesis. Students who complete the Dual Degree are awarded both degrees at the convocation.
Ques. Can a student in the Dual Degree programme exit with just a B.Tech after 4 years?
Ans. Yes, NIT Warangal's Dual Degree programme does allow students to exit with a B.Tech degree after completing 4 years, subject to fulfilling the B.Tech credit requirements. However, this option is generally discouraged as the primary purpose of the programme is to complete both degrees. Students who exit early with just a B.Tech are treated on par with regular B.Tech graduates for placement purposes. It is advisable to check the latest programme regulations on the NIT Warangal website for the current exit policy.
Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required for the B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree in Chemical Engineering at NIT Warangal?
Ans. The Dual Degree in Chemical Engineering at NIT Warangal typically has a higher closing rank (i.e., requires a lower JEE rank) compared to the regular B.Tech Chemical Engineering, due to its smaller intake of 12 seats and the integrated nature of the programme. Based on JoSAA 2025 trends, the closing rank for the Dual Degree (Open category, Other State) was generally in the range of 15,000-25,000 CRL. Candidates should check the official JoSAA opening and closing ranks on josaa.nic.in for the most accurate and updated data.
Ques. Are Dual Degree students eligible for campus placements at NIT Warangal?
Ans. Yes, Dual Degree students are fully eligible for campus placements facilitated by the Centre for Career Planning and Development (CCPD) at NIT Warangal. They can participate in placements either after the 4th year (as B.Tech graduates) or after the 5th year (as M.Tech graduates). Many Dual Degree students choose to sit for placements in the 5th year with their M.Tech degree, which can attract higher salary packages from companies that prefer postgraduate candidates. Chemical Engineering graduates from NIT Warangal are recruited by companies in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, FMCG, and IT sectors.
Ques. What research opportunities are available for Dual Degree students in Chemical Engineering at NIT Warangal?
Ans. The 5th year of the Dual Degree is primarily dedicated to M.Tech-level research and thesis work under the guidance of faculty in the Chemical Engineering department. Research areas include process intensification, sustainable energy, reaction engineering, computational fluid dynamics, and materials for energy applications. Students can also collaborate with external research organisations and industries for their thesis projects. Dual Degree graduates with strong research backgrounds are well-positioned for PhD admissions at IITs, IISc, and international universities.
Ques. Is the total fee for the Dual Degree programme higher than the regular B.Tech at NIT Warangal?
Ans. Yes, since the Dual Degree is a 5-year (10-semester) programme compared to the 4-year (8-semester) B.Tech, the total fee is higher. For Open/EWS/OBC category students, the total course fee for the Dual Degree is Rs. 6,67,500 (Rs. 1,05,000 in the 1st semester + Rs. 62,500 per semester for the remaining 9 semesters), compared to Rs. 8,40,000 for the regular B.Tech (Rs. 1,05,000 per semester for 8 semesters). Interestingly, the Dual Degree total fee is lower than the B.Tech total fee because the other charges of Rs. 42,500 are only collected once (in the 1st semester), whereas for B.Tech they are collected every semester. SC/ST/PwD students pay only Rs. 42,500 total (one-time other charges in the 1st semester) for the entire 5-year programme.
